Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

People complaining about giving away 52 need to calm down. There are no spots for 52th pick. I wanted them to move up but you have to have a willing partner.
Based on other trades, people were willing. Picks in 30s trades for assets we had.

What does missionary and being older have to do with each other?

The other meaning of elder... elderly... it works on different levels. He's older than Joe Ingles.

Yup... and it happens every year... and every year we pass cuz roster spots or too many young guys or not anyone we liked or I had a deal in place but want HH to be pissed tomorrow.

Thought I saw somewhere that jazz were doubting there’d be any roster spots, which played a part in selling the pick. Maybe that tony guy on Twitter

Yeah, the 2nd round thing is sticking with me as much or more than really not liking using 21 on Allen (and supposedly passing on a "really good" offer to trade him).

There were guys worth rolling the dice on. Even at 52.

Good post. Who are the 2nd round picks that the jazz have actually taken in the last 5 years or so anyway? Im just curious to see how they are doing now. I have no point to make or anything. Simply curious.
That's not a case to not care about the 2nd round, it's a case for caring more.

40% of the players in the NBA weren't 1st rounders. I guess the FOs attitude is they'd rather go kicking every tire and looking under every rock in Europe instead? But why not do both?

There is something about Locke that makes my blood boil. I was ready to move on and let it go and just hope Allen will improve his game, but just listen to his podcast today selling Allen. I've never seen mental gymnastics like this... so the 3 criticisms against him are -
(1) he can't defend... but oh well who could in college really? even Mitchell wasn't awesome in Louisville? ORLY? You gonna sell me this bill of goods? WTF are you looking at? Donovan was a monster defensively. Allen projects as worse denfender than Trae FRICKING YOUNG and Jerome Robinson... Process that for a little bit.

(2) elite athlete vs cones but doesn't show on tape - "I mean it's kinda true"... finishing at the rim in the 40s(FOURTIES!!!!), previous 2 year in the low 50s???? You know how we harp on Burks not being a efficient finisher even though he has flashy finishes at the rim? Well Burks in the NBA was MUCH better than Allen has been vs inferior competition in college. Also... when the floor was spread he was actually going to the rim... ORLY? Like... you mean... totally like the personnel we don't really have to play? Well OK then. I bet he will be going to the rim a ton with Rudy and Favs in there. Oh and one more... "u can see his athleticism when he chases contested balls" this is the first time I've heard this nonsense. So you are telling me Delly is an awesome athlete too? ORLY? Keep talking... lets hear more...

(3) for the reputation of an elite shooter... he's actually kind of... meh shooter. In essence in this exercise he tried limiting the sample to numbers that are not representative and saying - "I mean... he can improve on this(shooting open shots), or that"...

So to sum up - we should love the pick.. .but... 1. he cannot defend, 2. his supposed athleticism actually cannot be seen on tape, except when he goes for loose balls, and he cannot finish a the rim 3. his supposed super strength(shooting) is actually not super strong either...

Believe me, I was really getting to a place where I was OK with this pick, but this BS has engaged my gag reflex and I cannot swallow all the BS I'm being fed by the company shill.

I agree with this so much. I have always had a hard time with Locke’s “analytics”. But it’s the way he disregards some facts and analytics and accepts others that gets me. You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Allen has deficiencies and it’s okay to acknowledge them along with his strengths. Locke almost seems offended by people who are questioning and/or dislike the pick.

I’m underwhelmed with the pick, hope he helps our team with his skill set, and will cheer for him to develop into a good player. Honestly he reminds me of Danny Ainge and I’m not sure how to feel about that .

Last year I really wanted Ojeleye and Brown. Would still rather have Ojeleye than Bradley, of which we gave up two picks that could have even been both Brown and Ojeleye.

Let’s let KOC run the second round. That was always his strength.

Ha. I liked Semi and Hart quite a bit. Take any of the 3 and D guys and it might be a homerun.

or Johnny Lawrence

Grayson needs a nickname for sure.

Expedia "I'll book your trip" Grayson
Cobra Kai
Johnny Lawrence
Jayne Cobb
Tripwire Inc.
Jiu-jitsu
A.J. Maggott

I'm sure we'll see better ideas later.

We could actually cut somebody doe... Jonas, Thabo, Epke, Neto, maybe Favs doesn't return too... or maybe you pick someone get them in camp and don't offer a contract... sometimes you can tell in SL... like with Kuzma.

I really like Locke but this is dead on.

I would have preferred the Jazz trading 52 for a future pick or just taking a euro draft and stash prospect as opposed to selling the pick. Seems like it would provide the team better value going forward. But it doesn't bother me that much.

Yes. Even trading for a future second gives more flexibility.

Allen played bully ball at the 2 that's not going to work in the NBA. He got to the line, that won't happen either.

Considering those things, that Rubio is expiring this year, and that his role when he shares the floor with DM will likely be him playing "1", I hope that's the focus of his development.

so then you shouldn't be upset because all your choices went higher.

definitely not upset...I don't have much of a vested interest in the Jazz these days tbh...

I've followed Allen's story as a recruit still remember when he won the dunk contest at the mcdonalds all american game.

Listening to Locke, he makes it sound like the Jazz were zeroed in on JRob, DD, Huerter, and Allen. All of them had at least 2 years of college and all were proven shooters. He said he didn't think Anfernee Simons was on our timeline -- too young and too undeveloped. With Mitchell being 22 (and playing beyond his years) and Gobert now 26(?), I think the Jazz are looking for players in that age range to help them make a run.

Locke is also suggesting that Okobo dropping to 31 shows he's a drop in talent level.

Considering that, and that the only way he plays on the floor with DM is if he's playing "1", I hope that's the focus of his development.

You realize he’s closer to 6-5 then 6-3, right?
