Jazz Offseason Plan

Can't believe they signed him for 3 years with no team option on the third year. That two years 18 million is going to be almost impossible to unload this offseason.
And didn't get a $1M haircut this year to help them avoid the tax this year...

I think Rudy to Charlotte makes a ton of sense for these reasons:

- They are desperate to be relevant

- They really want a franchise big man

- They have loads of cap space

- They have 2 great facilitating PG's (LaMelo and Graham)

- They have struck out on picks in the past so using them to get a certain thing is worth it

- We could potentially do this deal and save major luxury dollars

I propose Rudy
for
Rozier, Bridges, Washington, 2022 1st rounder, a 1st rounder a few years down the road and unprotected, and maybe other draft considerations.
Remove Bridges or Washington and limit it to one pick and you will be in a range they might accept. We'd clear like $20M in cap too so that has to be factored in.

By all means ask for a home run but that is likely too much.

1st - Conley walks (up to him)

2nd - 3 way trade: Bojan to Lakers, Kuzma+picks to Spurs, Dejounte Murray to Utah

- Utah gets our PG of the future.

3rd - look to move Favors+pick for somebody who gives us some more lineup options (Chris Boucher and Kyle Anderson are names I like who could start at the 4 as defensive upgrades and gives us a small-ball center)

If we keep the rest of the roster to cheap deals I think that gets us under the luxury tax as well. Probably bring back Niang on the minimum as the backup 4, hope Udoka is ready for backup 5 minutes. Try to find a vet PG for slightly above the minimum.

Murray/???
Mitchell/Clarkson
Royce/Ingles
Anderson/Niang
Gobert/Udoka

Have the Jazz ever fielded two summer league teams? Does this foreshadow a “hunger games” and potential purge on the back half of the roster?

To me, suggests the Jazz want to try a bunch of guys out to see if we can find the next Royce.

This signifies that DL is not serious about attaining NBA-level talent.

I mean, maybe? We don’t have to pull roster players from our summer league roster. But I don’t see how casting a bigger net could be anything but a good thing here? It’s double the chances to find another Royce. Unlikely, but if you don’t try you never know.

Maybe, but I was looking at the Vucevic deal as a comparison, and I consider Rudy a much more valuable asset than Vucevic. Orlando got 2 first rounders, OPJ and Wendell Carter Jr. for Vucevic.

- The 2 1st rounders are only top 4 protected. Charlotte's picks to us would be considered weaker than Chicago's were to Orlando.

- Rozier is definitely better than OPJ, but they are both expiring contracts. That takes a lot away from the value of Rozier.

- Bridges and Washington are solid young pieces, but nothing points to them being diamonds in the rough with loads of potential.

- We only save $10 million if it's Rudy ($35) for Rozier ($18), Washington ($4.2) and Bridges ($5.4)

It means they’re diverting more attention to this and can also fall back on this as an explanation of how hard they’re working to find the next Torrey Craig.

Rudy is a better player but comes with much more contract risk. To be fair to you though... I thought Orlando killed chicago in that deal... I would not expect another team to be that dumb but who knows.

I think Washington and Bridges have shown a bit more than Carter, but I think Carter still has some potential upside.

I do think you are dealing with the right team and looking at about what it would net. Not sure how many folks would go for it. Just thought it was skewed more towards us... when I talk trades I try to get a little less than I think we should... just so it limits my homerness a bit.

Lonzo

And for the record, this is why I was so big on giving up the assets for Jrue Holiday. Jrue can play PG, but he doesn't have to. We should have gotten Jrue instead of Conley. But Lonzo would be a great fit too.

I say this every year, but..... the NBA as a league is dominated by the 6'8" / 220-lb. triple-threat wing. The reason is because they can do everything. They can defend multiple positions, grab a rebound, drive the ball, get to the rim, get an open look from 3pt, get a look from mid-range, and get in the key and make almost any pass on the floor. The game is just made for this type of player.

Look at Gordon Hayward. His dribble was pretty basic. His first step was pretty average. He was a good shooter, not a great shooter. He was a good passer, not a great passer. He could get to the rim, but he wasn't a skywalker. But Hayward impacted every play because he was that prototypical 6'8" / 220-lb wing with ball skills.

The Jazz haven't had that since Hayward left, and that's the guy I'd want to put on the floor between Mitchell and Gobert. Right now, Ingles is kind of a middling imitation of that player. The Jazz need a real one if they want to make the Finals.

Tell me more

In the event Conley leaves

Utah Out: Bojan/#30
Utah In: Murray/#41

LAL Out: Kuzma/#22
LAL In: Bojan

SAS Out: Murray/#41
SAS In: Kuzma/#22/#30

I could see LA kicking in a couple seconds as well. Gets us a PG signed for awhile, seems to fit alright (needs to keep working on his shot) and saves us a bit of money to duck the tax with Conley gone (which I think should be a pretty high priority). Helps with the perimeter defense (I'd still look for a guy who can really play the 4 - Boucher and Anderson are the names I like at a reasonable price point).

I agree completely. We need more wing talent. We needed it in the days of Stock and Malone. We needed it in the days of Deron and Booz. We need it in the day of Don and Rudy. We never prioritize it, but we need to find two way guys who fit the mold.

As for Lonzo, he is a great combination guy for Don. Excellent fit. Add him and a couple guys like you're talking, and we could have something real.

Lonzo would also be great, but he seems trickier to get here. Feels like somebody is going to sign him to more than I'd really like (I'm happy engough in the ~15M range).
