If Perry Jones III had gone pro after one season at Baylor, he could have been a top-five pick.
He didn't leave because he said he wasn't mature enough to be on his own.
"I'm not ready to move onto that next level yet and to have that lifestyle," Jones to Andy Katz of ESPN.com. "I'm 19. I know I could be a top-five pick. I know I could make a lot of money. If I'm not ready next year either, then I'm not ready next year.''
The consequences he's faced for staying an extra year have come through criticisms about his play on the court and even his achievements in the classroom.
After his decision to go pro this year, ESPN's Chad Ford has Jones going ninth overall to the Milwaukee Bucks . The discussions have come up about Jones' capability of being a successful NBA player or a bust.
One NBA GM told Ford that Jones needs to play his position.
"
He really has the game of a 2-guard or a small forward," one NBA GM told Ford. "Baylor used him as a center for the past two years, so you rarely got to see him comfortable. It's like, what if UConn had tried to play Rudy Gay at the 5? I think people would've had a very different opinion of him on draft night.
"Players are who they think they are, not who you think they are," the scout said. "
Perry Jones thinks like a point guard, not a big man. That's where his heart is. Embrace that and he's going to be amazing. Fight it and he could be a huge disappointment."
