What's new

Deron is coming back to Utah.

What I meant was if we were to turn around and re-sign Deron, it would be like we'd shafted the Nets. As mentioned before in my previous posts on this thread, GMs in this league work a lot on relationship & favors basis and to turn around and re-sign Deron would have meant the end of relationship between KOC and Billy King. Why? Because the more chance Deron has in re-signing with the Jazz the less chance that Deron would consider the Nets. Out of courtesy, KOC needs to shut down that possibility (unless it's for a sign & trade with Nets).

First off, I don't think Deron is ever coming back here. But you've been on this soap box for a long time (beyond this thread, even) and I'm wondering exactly how you know all the implications of such a scenario playing out. The NBA is business, no? To the best of my understanding, the Nets knew exactly what they were getting into - Deron staying long term was always a 50-50 shot, at best. So they took that gamble. The notion that Dwill coming back to Utah would impact the league wide perception of KOC's ethics or integrity (and subsequently his ability to find willing trading partners) is silly. KOC planning out such ruse (this would have to be the case, if his integrity were in question, right?) is even more far fetched and a bigger gamble than NJN trading for Deron on the hope that he could be persuaded to stay.

Besides, IMO, GMs are probably always suspicious of each other anyway. It's their job to get the upper hand.

I still think Dallas is nearly a done deal if they can clear enough cap to sign him. They have a great owner, a good coach, and decent management. They also have Dirk, who should have 3-4 more years left of productivity.

And the whole hometown thing helps out.

so he missed best buy?

Dutch, perhaps you should know a bit about me first, I have posted here, and even shared the article that was about me in the Trib here. I was on the cover of the sports section of the December 25th, 2010 issue, for my relationship with the team, the article was titled "Jazz Superfan a Tunnel Visionary". I have a very personal relationship with the team, players, coaches, and all the staff. Every night, I am seeing most of the team, and getting to have little conversations with them. In fact, I kinda opened my mouth the other day, when they were warming up for the Suns game that determined if we went to the playoffs, and I told Big Al, Alec Burkes, Gordon Hayward and Jeremy Evans if they made the playoffs, I would go for a full on mohawk in either green or blue for them. They loved the idea and smiled and laughed. Now I have to go get it all cut down for that mohawk, I am a man of my word. Anyways, point being don't bring up the "best buy rumor mill" stuff when you have NO CLUE whatsoever as to the person you are referring to. I am sure many here will remember that article, and the post about it in this forum as proof... Oh and here is that original post... https://jazzfanz.com/showthread.php?3617-Utah-Jazz-Holiday-Story

Please, next time when you see Big Al - tell him that his D sucks badly.

I think the idea that we are the "best" chance for Deron to have a long-term championship window is a stretch. The teams out there with deeper pockets can turn into contenders overnight in the current NBA landscape. Whereas the Jazz and other small-market teams have to do everything right every step of the way to turn scarce financial resources into a stacked, well-balanced lineup that can legitimately compete for a championship.

Nevertheless, we do have an unusual surplus of young talent and could easily flip some of our assets into a top-flight PG/another body on the wing and become a contender in the very near future. Plus, Deron and his family are comfortable in Utah and like it here.

Given the way his exit went down, I'd be shocked to ever see him in a Jazz uniform again. We can't forget that there seemed to be a real fracture in the relationship between Deron and the Jazz coaching staff/front-office. Who knows what really went on behind closed doors, none of us are privy to it, but from the outside it seems like there would have to be some serious ego soothing/mutual understandings between all parties involved for that to happen.

As far as KOC "backstabbing" Billy King or what not - I don't think that would play any part in this. The Jazz brass is first-class, people know this league-wide. All parties involved would know that DWill's "shocking" return to the Jazz wasn't some premeditated effort to screw over the Nets. Plus, I'm sure KOC would assemble a nice sign-and-trade with NJ to soften the blow.

Exactly - at the very least KOC would have to do that. But to sign him outright as a FA is a big middle finger to King and is a definite NO NO IMO.

For the record what I'm saying is some sort of a sign & trade with NJ is still a possibility.

But for KOC to "sneak around the back door" and try to sign DWill outright as a FA is still to me not giving NJ a fair chance to get something back in return. If DWill is definitely not going back to NJ, King would be furiously trying to do sign & trade with any team that's interested (it would be a win-win situation as DWill can get that extra year and NJ can get something back in return).

But for KOC to contact DWill directly while NJ is still trying to work something out is absolutely not giving NJ a fair chance. Heck we got Favors, Kanter and Harris out of this.

As stated, I put this question to Brian T Smith and for everything that he knows but doesn't write about, he said that as long as this front office is still here, he doesn't see DWill coming back to Utah.

About Best Buy, I don't recall all the details, but someone on here said he saw one of the Jazz players at Best Buy. Can't recall who and he told some crazy story that seemed fabricated, though I don't remember if it ever was proven that it was. I think it had to do with a trade. That's the best that I can remember. Let one of the more active posters here fill in the correct details.

Pretty sure it had something to do with Boozer but I don't recall exactly. Something about a trade being in place that was sending him to the Lakers after his first year here. He ran into a reporter in the parking lot at Best Buy and spilled the beans.

It's funny how the Best Buy part is the most memorable aspect. Whenever there is a cheesy rumor here the Best Buy thing always gets tossed in.

DW is not coming back to Utah. I think his latest comments are pointing to re-signing in NJ. He is very excited about playing in the new arena and feels it will attract the FAs needed to build the team.

Deron is a FA if he opts out. I don't see how KOC owes anything to NJ. I still don't think he will come back.

I could be wrong...but I think it was a poster named "Newsbreaker" that reported meeting Carlos Boozer in the parking lot of Best Buy and supposedly, a bunch of juicy information was given out by Boozer to this complete stranger.

That sounds right. This was at the point where Boozer had just bought a large house in the LA area and everyone was paranoid that he was being traded to LA for a bunch of junk.

I don't know about that. I think Dwill needs to go somewhere with a legitimate All-Star PF who can run pick n' roll. David West is good, but he is 31 and is strictly a pop man.

That's a good point. But outside of that, that is a well-assembled team that would give him numerous good options, a spread floor, and could pay him.

Why would we pay max money for Deron? And why would Deron take a pay cut to come back here?

Folks have gotta understand, Kanter, Favors, Hayward, Burks, etc aren't going to be on rookie contracts forever. If you don't think that big markets/rich owners like New York, SA, LA, Miami, Portland, Dallas, etc won't be interested in Hayward or Favors, then you're not thinking.

And the "other guys" like Millsap, Jefferson, Harris, etc will all be wanting more money too. And believe it or not, someone might actually be willing to pay Millsap more than the garbage that he's currently on. If Boozer is getting 80+ million, why shouldn't Millsap? True, Chicago was retarded and that was done under a different CBA... But Millsap is going to get a raise... REGARDLESS! And he deserves it! Millsap is far better in every way possible than Boozer. I think some of you are going to be surprised how many teams are really going to go after Millsap and Jefferson. Bigs that can score are at a premium in this league!

We aren't the Mavs or Yankees here folks! This isn't Monopoly, where you play with fake money. I swear some of you have never heard of the concept of SALARY CAP and FRANCHISE FINANCIAL VIABILITY... We can't give max money out to 12 players here.
