2014 College Football

Does Utah have a strength this year that separates them from middle of the pack teams?

I know their QB has talent, but he isn't on an elite level at all. If you can't dominate teams in certain aspects of the game, you aren't going to go far.

To be fair, I've only watched a few quarters of Utah football this year, but nothing I saw has impressed me.

When watching BYU, you can tell teams have to change their game-plan just because of Hill. Does Utah have anyone like that on defense or offense?

Yeah, plus while saying all you have to do is commit a lot of people in the box to stop Hill sounds good, he isn't such a terrible passer that he can't take advantage of man-to-man coverage with limited safety help. All it takes is a scramble out of the pocket and all of the sudden WR are wide open in space.

Until someone stops Hill this year, saying Utah would undoubtedly do it is laughable.
Yep.
Every team has been loading the box against byu every game so far this year....and byu is averaging close to 40pts per game still.
Doesnt seem to be working.

Teams loaded the box against tebow when he was at Florida too and they won alot of games iirc

They have amazing special teams... legit all americans at punter, kicker and returner.

Dres Anderson (wide receiver) is pretty dynamic too. (Though he has a history of dropping passes)

Damn, I really wish MSU could find a kicker worth a ****. I can almost guarantee we will lose a game this year because our kickers are shaky on anything outside of PAT's (they are even shaky on those).

And our kick returner was awful vs. LSU. Cost us 20 yards of field position on numerous punts with bad decision on fair catches.

I worry about byu's kicker too. He hasn't missed yet iirc, but he hasn't attempted anything difficult.

It's amazing how many bad kickers are in college. Then in the nfl every kicker is automatic up to 50 yards and most of them up to 55.

The eagles kicker was not even drafted and they picked him up out of nowhere and he is money on every attempt

Yeah, I don't get it either. Really makes you appreciate how hard it is to actually be a NFL kicker when you see such a lack of talent out there in the college game.

Vyvanse is a hell of a drug for making post on Jazzfanz while multi-task study for an Ecology test.

Funny how you and green talk about the utes being in a whole different class than byu.

It's like you think the utes are the #1 team in the country and byu is idaho state.

Makes ute fans sound pretty stupid really.

Oh well, keep up the good work

I do wonder why the national media doesn't see things the way you and green do.

Its all good though the utes have no one but themselves to blame for not playing byu this year.

Argh. This is the drastic jumps to bad conclusions that you cougar fans like to do. I've said all along that Utah is a 6-8 win team, and if you had to pin me down, I'd say they win 7 games. That isn't anywhere near the #1 team in the country.

It's BYU fans pining for Alabama.

It's BYU fans and coaches saying they belong in the playoff system.

It's BYU fans saying Hill is a Heisman contender.

Not Utah fans. Who looks silly? The fans that say their team is a 7 win team or the team that thinks they can compete with a top 4 team?

You know what is great about Utah? It doesn't matter what people think nationally. If they win all their games, they are national champions. If BYU wins all their games? They get the Miami Bowl. Good luck with that.

;)

True that. Sucks for BYU that Texas isn't a powerhouse program anymore. Beating Texas in years past would always be a huge resume booster, now it's nothing.

BYU needs to raise the ante next year in Hill's final year and schedule a projected top 10 team next year.

You saying byu would get blown out by utah makes it sound like you think utah is way better than byu.

Byu is undefeated and ranked in the top 20 with a top qb in the country.

Utes would have to be a legit top 5 in the country level team to be assured an easy blowout victory over byu.

Just stop being a dick ok. How about that?

I dont bash in utah at all..... quite the opposite.

Let's bash Utah. We need to turn this thread into BYU/MSU dominance.

When playing BYU, teams like Houston, UConn, and a Texas team missing 13 of their 22 starters has to game plan for Hill.

Utah has Bubba Poole, that Michigan forgot to game plan for. They have Nate Orchard. It looks like they have Gionni Paul (14 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FR vs Michigan, national defensive player of the week).

BUT, if you had to only pick one player, it would be Dres Anderson, Kaelin Clay or Nate Orchard.

So, I guess they have three players. So, yeah, Hill is impressive...if you are a mid major team.

Like it was mentioned before, with Utah's talent, and most P5 team's talent, Hill isn't as hard to defend. Their WR's aren't good enough to shed man to man coverage, and Hill isn't good enough to get them the ball. Put 8 men in the box, spy Hill with a Safety (btw, Carter, Utah's safety, could easily keep up with Hill. He beat DeAnthony Thomas in a track meet in high school), and let BYU try to move the ball.

Utah has one of the best receivers in the PAC-12 in Anderson.

Utah has the best return man on special teams in the country in Kaelin Clay.

Nate Orchard is on par with Hill on the whole "talent compared to other players in your position". Heck, Orchard is probably better, because he actually has an NFL career. Hill might be more on line with Gionni Paul.

As to your "aspects of the game" question, Utah has the best ST in the country. They scored 15 points against Michigan.

Utah consistently has one of the best DL in the country, and is leading the nation in sacks per game.

Utah has the third best QB in the country according to QB rating.

Utah is #5 in the country in points margin per game and 1st in the PAC-12 at over 30 points per game.

So, yeah, they have a couple of strengths.

Not exactly the equivalent. Yes, this is a general college football thread, and Cy can obviously post whatever he likes. However, being a Utah Jazz forum, it's obvious that the overwhelming majority of posters talk Utah and BYU. They're relevant due to the demographic of the board and those two teams drive the football discussion 99% of the time. It would be like me going to an Atlanta Hawk message board and trying to drum up a conversation with folks that have no interest in discussing Utah football.

Like I said, Cy can post whatever the hell he likes and conversely, I'm allowed to find it extremely odd that he can spend an entire evening posting constant real time updates on a team that literally nobody else cares about. But hey, whatever turns ya on.

Zulu, though he rarely post anymore, is a MSU fan.

It's BYU fans pining for Alabama.
that was like 3 dudes. Stop over exaggerating
It's BYU fans and coaches saying they belong in the playoff system.
Wrong.
Majority of byu fans are just hoping for one of the 6 big bowls... Not the playoff. We know that isnt going to happen.
Stop lying please
It's BYU fans saying Hill is a Heisman contender.
Of course we are..... so is all of the national media. Why wouldn't we be having fun with it too?

Well I guess we will see how good BYU is when their bowl game gets scheduled. Hopefully they maintain their undefeated season so we can see them against a very good P5 team and see how good/bad BYU really is.

I will have to watch a Utah game this year when they get into the hard part of their Pac-12 schedule.

Take everything green says about the utes with a grain of salt. I don't think he can be objective about byu or utah

Michigan or anyone having to gamelan for bubba poole is lololol

What makes you think BYU would beat Utah this year? Hill is better, but not world's better.

So, let's compare ok.

Hill is better than he was last year.
Williams should be better than he was last year.
BYU's OL may be better.
Their receivers aren't better than they were last year.

Compared to Utah's DL - much better. Leading the nation in sacks per game.
Utah's LB'ers - much better. Utah's rush defense is improved.
Utah's CB's - wash, but BYU's receivers lost Hoffman, they took a step back.
Utah's safeties - Much better. Blechen and Carter are light year's better. Heck, they already have more INT's than Utah's safeties had last year.

So, BYU couldn't score on Utah last year, and I'd say that Utah's defense has improve a lot more than BYU's offense has improved. Why would they move the ball more this year?

On Utah's offense:

Wilson is a lot better than last year. Last year he was TO prone. This year, he is the #3 rated passer in the country.
RB's are a lot better. Poole was the starter last year. He is the backup this year.
WR's are a lot better. It was Dres and no one. Utah is 4-5 deep this year.
OL is better this year.

BYU's defense is not as good as it was last year.

So, in summary, Utah's offense is much better, BYU's defense has taken a step back. BYU's offense has improved, but Utah's defense is much, much better.

Utah would win this game easily this year. Last year, the game was never close or in doubt. Utah dominated that game physically from beginning to end. It would be worse this year.

What makes you think BYU would beat Utah this year?

When did I say they would?

I'm not trash talking or being a dick.
That is your role in this thread.

I have gave the utes lots of love throughout this whole thread

You know what's funny? If Utah goes 6-6 and BYU goes 11-0 and they meet up in the Miami Bowl, all we will hear about for a month is how BYU is going to finally beat Utah, and this is their year, and blah, blah, blah....And Utah would destroy them. Then all we would hear about is how Utah only gets up for BYU, etc.

Maybe that would be a good thing. Maybe Whitt/Hill would just end the series after that.

Why can't BYU and Utah workout playing each other every year?

Is it an argument over money?

Complete BS that the two teams can work something out for the fans. Rivalry games like this are what makes College Football better than the NFL.
