What's new

After game 1, who wishes we had a draft pick next year?

For this team to move forward, they need the right players. Having a pick in this year's draft would be an asset, but that doesn't solve the challenge by itself. I think the Jazz should trade Harris and one of their bigs.

We need a PG who is a real playmaker and a wing scorer.

I'm not calling you a loser; but this is such a loser mentality.

When OKC was an 8 seed 3 years ago, was anyone looking for them to tank the season?

It's a simple question - are Hayward, Burks, Kanter and Favors your future?

If so, then you have to move forward and get these guys playoff minutes.

If not, then yes, you tank the season and end up like the other dozen or so teams in the league that have been playing for next season for the past 10 years

Nope, it's showing our young guys what playoff basketball is. Hayward, while getting 12 FTA's, was completely disrupted by Manu on defense. He needs to learn how to fight through all that contact and make shots.

Btw, I think Evan Turner can play pg, and I would consider moving Al Jefferson in a deal involving Turner. He's kind of like Shaun Livingston, pre-injury.

I still think getting kendall marshall or lillard would help this team more than a first round playoff exit.

Having said that however, it sure is fun that the jazz are in the playoffs and i get to see more of them.... also i like that the nation is aware that the jazz are a good up and coming team.

As for what candrew said.... No one in this thread is saying they wish the jazz would tank. For the last time people, there is a difference between the team tanking (like golden state) and the team playing thier butts off but coming up just short of the playoffs and keeping thier pick while still growing and having that hunger for the playoffs in the future.
The question should never have been: Would you rather we tank? or make the playoffs?

The question always has been: Would you rather the jazz play thier asses off and try thier hardest to make the playoffs but come up just a little short and keep thier pick? OR they make the playoffs and lose in the 1st round and give away the pick.

No way. This playoff experience is invaluable to Hayward & Favors' development, and to a lesser extent Kanter & Burks.

Positives
In the first half Hayward and Favors were playing with an intensity level that I had never seen from them before. Hayward especially had that "look" in his eyes. He sank big shots and you can tell he was going to make this game count. He even broke out a couple of slashing moves to the basket to get to the FT line. Say goodbye to Gordon "I always defer" Hayward. Favors also showed that his post moves can "work" in the playoffs which should solidify his confidence in those moves.

Lessons
Hayward needs to step up his defense and he will realize that. Favors NEEDS to be able to knock down those free throws. What better time to learn that the hard way than in the playoff atmosphere.

I thought that Phoenix game was huge - this game just takes the intensity up to whole new level. That "taste" of the playoffs should set them on fire this Summer trying to improve themselves to the NEXT LEVEL. It's vital that they take that step from being valuable contributors this year to solid starters next year.

We have the talent in our young guys. Even Kanter & Burks have huge potential. It's how we build on that that's going to define who we are as a team.

I think that gaining experience in these playoffs is a good thing, but i wouldn't go so far as to say that if we missed the playoffs this year then hayward and favors futures would somehow suck. I saw intensity by both players and alot of learning/development during regular season games this year.

In todays game i saw hayward and favors playing great early and then getting schooled later and i saw them hanging there heads a bit, hayward not being able to hit anything from the field, favors not going after loose balls.

Sure this playoff experience could help them to learn.... it could also hurt thier confidence if the series never becomes close.
I still think the jazz can win a game or two and make the spurs earn the rest of thier games and then i believe the playoffs will have been worth it.

Todays game however i dont think was that great for thier development, and if they loose every game by double digits and get swept then i dont think they will have gained much and they will have given up a possible piece of thier future in the process.

Also i saw alot of develpment throughout the season from all our young guys, and that was without summer league and a shortened training camp/pre-season.... in other words you can develop during regular season, not just playoffs.

I like Turner and I think that he could be a great SF for this team. With that being said I would rather see he Jazz get a PG that can hit the open shot and let Turner and Hayward run the offense.

Not me. 14th picks are generally role players or starters on bad teams. This is fact.

Marcus Morris
Patrick Patterson
Earl Clark
Anthony Randolph
Al Thorton
Ronnie Brewer
Rashard Mcants
Kris Humphries
Luke Ridnour
Fred Jones

These are the last 10 years, any pro tankers see anything they like there? Also worthy of note - we owe them the pick eventually and will just be kicking the payment of it down the road.

Good observation regarding their inconsistency. Great players (Tony Parker, Duncan) play consistently good/great. They need to learn to do that themselves for 48 min. This is exactly why I think they need this playoff experience.

One question - can you feel the difference in the intensity of competition between this game and the Phoenix game? To me it's like the difference between jogging (regular season) and sprinting (post season).

They need to understand that level of intensity so that they can train during the Summer accordingly. It's not enough to shoot 50% FT. It's not enough to play great for just 1 half. They need to know that so that they can prepare themselves accordingly.

At some point soon, the Jazz really need to trade at least one of their bigs. The player they get back in that trade will probably be better than the player they'd draft at #14. We can't have our 4 biggest impact players at just 2 positions.

So you think that these young players would think that its ok to play great for just one half in the playoffs if they were never to make it into the playoffs?

I think that they are smart enough to know that they need to play great for the whole game against a number one seed in a playoff game even before they made the playoffs. I also think that they know that they need to shoot better than 50% free throws to beat good team in the playoffs.

As far as the level of intensity question.... i noticed it in the spurs home crowd for sure. However it didn't seem like alot of the players were more intense than in a big time regular season game.
I still saw Al being his slow self, i saw parker destroying us, I saw duncan with solid if unspactacular play, I saw bonner hitting threes.... In other words it looked just like jazz vs spurs in the regular season. Except for the crowd (they were very intense and awesome.)

Also as to the OP question: For me it is too early to tell if I would rather have the draft pick.

If we lose by double digits 4 games in a row, then i would take the draft pick. If the series is competitive then i think the playoff experience would be more important than the pick.

As I mentioned earlier, playoff experience is as much needed for Corbin as it is the young players. And the Jazz don't lose a pick, they merely pay off their credit.

As for Kanter, there should be no more expectations than identifying if he has talent. His raw skills are there, with the exception of his passing ability. Expect Kanter to be not much different next year as this year. It's year 3 and year 4 where everyone will learn if he's a Jermaine O'Neal or Kosta Koufos.
