Burks at #12

From a purely selfish reason it's such a thrill (and yeah, that makes my life pathetic I know) to root for a Colorado player on the Jazz. NBA players from the University of Colorado are a rare breed in and of itself. But I think Burks has the chance to be special, and at the very least should be a serviceable player in the league.

Interesting; Kanter had 'bout the same "lane agility" as Favors...
Hardaway was also a headcase; I'm near Orlando and saw a lot of him back then. Burks seems to have way more DRIVE and WANT TO between the ears than Hardaway ever did!

Don't mean to get too far off topic but I like Pullen. I like Hansbrough too.

Hansbrough is undersized, and less talented then his brother... and if Tyler struggles with anything it's being undersized and not a natural talent.

But Pullen is a great player, I'm surprised he was overlooked... he can run an offense as good as anyone.

And yet Burks will likely (I'd say 96% chance) never have the career Hardaway had.

Was just scrolling through Burks' game log from this past season, and man did he turn it on for the Big 12 tournament and NIT. His stats:

****ing incredible.

I wouldn't even list his NIT stats. First 2-3 teams they faced where jokes. They didn't get challenged til Bama, who they almost beat. They should have been in the NCAA.

God darnit. If he can become a solid defender, we may have something fairly special here.
And he was almost at the bottom of the draft class in terms of his buckets assisted, so he's doing that damage all on his own for the most part. Dude could be special. I'm excited to see him develop. The more I look at the pick, the more I like it.

Wow. Very interesting stat. And we're not talking about some junior or senior here.

Same here. I didn't really like the pick at first. But that's because I slotted Hayward in at SG and focused on SF's (or Fredette) for the #12. But even if Hayward and Burks both merit 30 mins+ at some point, there's plenty of playing time at the 2/3. Still need a bigger SF to for match-ups...perhaps that's Millsap? Or if Burks really does have great ball-handling skills, he can get minutes in the backcourt with Hayward. Wouldn't that be fun to see those guys just keep posting up?!

What's great to see is the Jazz are getting some real versatility. We have three guys who can play the 4 OR 5. Three who can go 2/3 (if you count CJ). Now perhaps a legit combo guard in Burks. Perhaps a combo forward in Millsap given his outstanding range.

And, unlike past teams, we'll have a couple of guys in Hayward and Burks who have the ability to drive and get shots. I hope there's not a lengthy lockout. I'd love to see the rookie/soph game with FOUR Jazz players competing. And then next year possibly FOUR again if we get two more lottery picks.

The players they've been drafting in the lottery will create match up nightmares for teams. It will force teams to react and adjust to the Jazz's lineups, not the other way around (which has been the case for some time).

This will make Ty's job much easier. He'll have versatile group he use to exploit mismatches much easier and more often. No more Brewers and Korvers.

I think most are very impressed with his overall stats (minus three point shooting), abilities, measureables, style (very smooth), etc.

My question marks then become.
1) How is he without the ball?
2) How's his basketball iq?
3) How's his character and moreso, leadership?

All legit questions. There's always a chance he comes in and becomes another Snyder, who wanted to be an instant star, or an Almond, who only wanted to shoot. I think it must be hard to transition from a star in HS and the main guy on your college team to perhaps the 3rd or 4th option, or even a bench player in the NBA. Burks certainly has a lot of self-confidence. Let's hope that serves him well vs. creating conflicts. I'd like to see him develop into a 6th man. I still like Hayward more as a SG, and don't like Hayward moving to SF to allow Burks to start, except against small lineups. Burks could become a player like Maggette. He still gets 30+ mins, but you have a bigger SF who plays 6-7 mins to start each half. Then as the starters go out, Burks would become one of the main options.

Screw 6th man. I want him to become a go-to guy.

What i hope is, Hayward becomes the leader of this new team. Both due to his age comparing to burks, kanter and favors and his character. Kanter has a very good personality and work ethic but i dont think he can be the leader of the team. Neither do burks and favors.

Burks can become a starter if he works hard but that will push Hayward to SF which i dont really prefer him at. Instead i would like to see Burks rather as a best 6th man in the league instead of a decent starter.
Like terry in dallas or odom in la. Even ginobili accepted that role last year or the year before. Players with character doesnt cry if they dont get what they want, they just work hard and let their game speak instead.
