What's new

Dennis Lindsey: We will be VERY active in free agency

After not making a trade for PJ Tucker (though this is still possible) I'm realizing we should really try and sign Jared Dudley. We need a backup wing.

I would be shocked if we added anybody else who got 15+ mpg unless there is an injury. Just look at the current depth chart:

PG Exum, Hill, Mack - we aren't adding anybody here
SG Hood, Hill, Burks - we aren't adding anybody here
SF Hayward, Hood, Ingles - we might add somebody here, but Hayward and Hood will get 40mpg+
PF Favors, Lyles and maybe Bolomboy and I've heard Hayward some - we might add somebody here, but Favors and Lyles will get 40mpg+
C Gobert, Favors, Withey - we will probably add here, but Gobert and Favors will get 38mpg

So if we added in free agency, we'd add somebody like a Channing Frye, Dudley, etc. And that guy would only be here to address a playoff need or injury relief. Barring a trade, I don't see us adding a 20mpg player.

We don't have 20 minutes for Dudley in the rotation at this point. I guess if you plan on having injuries maybe.

Hayward, Favors, and Gobert should all be around 32-36 minutes. Hood and Hill need around 30. Exum, Lyles, and Burks 20-25. That's 90-95% of our minutes already allocated when healthy.

Then we have Mack, Ingles, Neto who are all decent fill in options.

Here is my guess on the player we get:

High end: Jerebko, Tucker, Lance Thomas (on a high one year deal with team option for year two)

More likely: Anthony Tolliver, Quincy Pondexter, Quincy Acy

Could also see us get Brandon Bass, Jon Leuer, Andrew Nicholson or Tyler Hansbrough. Or a more traditional wing like Wes Johnson, Chase Budinger, etc.

If the price was right I'd love Solomon Hill, but other teams probably would offer a bigger salary and better role.

So basically I think it will be one or two meh moves, but that's all we really need tbh.

My prediction is we get Jerebko... Boston will want to free up his cap hold and send him somewhere for a second round pick... we have a lot of those. Would love Tucker but think Phx holds on there unless they do a bigger rebuild.

Interesting, but Favors or Millsap would have to go to the bench. Neither will take that.

However, Favors, Burke and scraps(2nd rounders, Tomic rights, Pleiss) for Millsap and a future Atlanta first would be intriguing. Favors played college in Atlanta area. Millsap is such a phenomenal fit next to Gobert. If we wanted to "win now", this is a brilliant trade.

Gobert would go to the bench. That being said, if Lindsey traded Favors for Millsap, he should be fired.

Interview after the draft:
https://espn700sports.com/interviews/dennis-lindsey-utah-jazz-general-manager-6-23-16/

Highlights:
About Bolomboy:
-we liked his character and athleticism
-a little bit surprised that he was there at 52
-has become a better shooter in Weber state

About Wallace:
-he's a big guard, great defender, very versatile

About Marcus Paige:
-can score the ball
-underrated pnr player
-high character, academic all-American

About the draft:
-We tried moving back into the first round(was about to to say at what position they started their attempts, but stopped himself, said he can't reveal that). We were close, but it didn't happen
-There were a few people we liked at 42, but they were taken right in front of us, so they decided to get some extra cash and move back

Miscellaneous:
-Agents and players know Utah is a great place to train and improve, word gets around that Quin is fair to the young guys...
-Will Dante be a starter? - didn't answer, but said that there will be more competition on the roster this year and the players know that we need reinforcements. Quin will be the one deciding who starts and who finishes and who plays.
-We plan on being VERY active in FA
-Dante's cleaned up his shot, but there are still some steps. This is a summer-long project to get him back to where he needs to be.
-Punted on questions of whether he's relieved that Exum and Hayward won't be in Rio and whether he prefers France qualifies to Rio.

The bolded part to me is the most consequential part of this interview. I think we can expect at least 2 FA/trade additions to the team.

Dennis Lindsey actually used the term "bake" in this interview. I died from laughter.

Does this mean a return of Brock Motum to fall camp? Wallace physically is close to Exum. Is DL throwing some shade at Dante?

I think we can now safely say we know Dennis' MO. He likes to deflect attention away from real questions by talking about things that fans can't see. Players he almost traded for, players he considered trading, draft picks that were almost bought, players that nearly fell to the Jazz, FA's that he might have called, and success the Jazz almost had. It's an interesting technique, and effective for a new GM. I wonder if the effectiveness runs out over tine as the audience grows numb to the message.
So what's the alternative? No information at all? Two teams, both wanting to win the trade, have to agree to a deal. Deals are going to fall through, or not happen because the teams couldn't agree on terms, or because another team makes a better offer. Most of the league was trying to trade for picks. Doesn't mean he's not out there trying to get things done. He's probably better off with the KOC "no comment" approach.

Another guy you may see is Mike Dunleavy... not sure if he is healthy.

Unless Burks is traded (which I highly doubt as his value is currently at an all-time low), I don't expect any significant FA additions. However that doesn't mean we won't be active as I expect us to sign a veteran SF &/or C, who will provide leadership/experience while accepting a minor role (I don't know enough of who's available to name specific players). Although our rotation seems fairly set, due to last year, I believe DL will be sure to have plenty of depth as insurance in the event of another injury plagued season.

Exum/Hill/Mack/Neto
Hood/Burks/Johnson or Burke
Hayward/FA/Ingles
Favors/Lyles/Bolomboy
Gobert/FA/Whithey

(Obviously some players will get time at other positions: Hill/Exum at SG, Hood at SF, Favors at C, etc)

For what it's worth Locke speculated that "shooting center" was the team's biggest remaining need on the radio this morning.
