What's new

Dennis Lindsey: We will be VERY active in free agency

We don't have 20 minutes for Dudley in the rotation at this point. I guess if you plan on having injuries maybe.

Hayward, Favors, and Gobert should all be around 32-36 minutes. Hood and Hill need around 30. Exum, Lyles, and Burks 20-25. That's 90-95% of our minutes already allocated when healthy.

Then we have Mack, Ingles, Neto who are all decent fill in options.

Here is my guess on the player we get:

High end: Jerebko, Tucker, Lance Thomas (on a high one year deal with team option for year two)

More likely: Anthony Tolliver, Quincy Pondexter, Quincy Acy

Could also see us get Brandon Bass, Jon Leuer, Andrew Nicholson or Tyler Hansbrough. Or a more traditional wing like Wes Johnson, Chase Budinger, etc.

If the price was right I'd love Solomon Hill, but other teams probably would offer a bigger salary and better role.

So basically I think it will be one or two meh moves, but that's all we really need tbh.

I listened to DUdley's interview where he mentioned Utah as a possible destination. He was talking about how he is ready to do whatever it takes and that he won't be demanding minutes. He was saying that he wants to be a vet for young team and that he can help even from the bench.

He's not a center, but an outside-shooting big I would love to see with the Jazz is Ryan Anderson. Good hustle, can put the ball on the floor, seems like a high-character guy-- I think he'd flourish in Quinn's system.

Wonder if they're hinting at Pau Gasol. He's a guy who fits the criteria. Veteran leader. All star. Can shoot and play defense. Knows, likes and respects Quin Snyder. Could share the court with any of Gobert, Favors or Lyles. I could see him as being a viable target this offseason. Seems like a move DL would make. Looking at this past season, having Gasol and Hill around would have easily gotten the Jazz several more wins and a spot in the playoffs.

I've said that I want DeMar DeRozan, but I'd happily support getting Gasol instead. Depending on what he costs, they could still add a veteran wing or combo forward to back up Hayward.

Gobert, Gasol, Favors, Lyles, Hayward, Hood, Burks, Exum and Hill. That's a pretty damn good team if they stay healthy.

I think we can now safely say we know Dennis' MO. He likes to deflect attention away from real questions by talking about things that fans can't see. Players he almost traded for, players he considered trading, draft picks that were almost bought, players that nearly fell to the Jazz, FA's that he might have called, and success the Jazz almost had. It's an interesting technique, and effective for a new GM. I wonder if the effectiveness runs out over tine as the audience grows numb to the message.
Pretty funny. Both KOC and DL used to say they explored all options, but price was too high, and they liked the players they had. I think it was an overpay for Hill and that the pick should have been used on someone with high upside. But at least DL finally did something.

Free agency and trades are the only real area that DL has been lacking in. He has done great in most other areas.

I strongly disagree in keeping the pick for another "upside" pick.

I agree that he deflects, something he learned from KOC lol.

Not worth the money. If we sign anyone of that ilk, it would have to be someone extremely marginal, like an Anthony Toliver.

I don't think we will sign anyone of any impact. We will be very active is GM speak after a meh-draft. Not saying DL did a bad job here... Just that he says stuff.

He said we'd be very aggressive in the draft... I mean I guess we did get Hill but I thought when teams were selling crap off we'd go get some of that crap. Not saying we didn't try.

What positions we need to fill backup SF, upgrade at fourth big.... Don't see a lot of aggressive moves there and I'd rather use the cap space this year to extend favs and hill. I don't want any salary beyond 2018 unless we got a core piece and for the roles we have available I don't see a core piece out there.

Yeah, I don't think we will make a splash and I don't think this is what he means(getting high level FA). I think what he means is that he will probably pursue filling those specific needs - back up SF and 4th big. I think the type of players we will be pursuing are Solomon Hill/Jared Dudley for the SF spot and Teletovic/Leuer for the 4th big spot. If he manages to get those spots filled with quality backups without sacrificing our long-term flexibility(2018 is my goal) I'd consider our free agency successful.

Interview after the draft:
https://espn700sports.com/interviews/dennis-lindsey-utah-jazz-general-manager-6-23-16/

Highlights:
About Bolomboy:
-we liked his character and athleticism
-a little bit surprised that he was there at 52
-has become a better shooter in Weber state

About Wallace:
-he's a big guard, great defender, very versatile

About Marcus Paige:
-can score the ball
-underrated pnr player
-high character, academic all-American

About the draft:
-We tried moving back into the first round(was about to to say at what position they started their attempts, but stopped himself, said he can't reveal that). We were close, but it didn't happen
-There were a few people we liked at 42, but they were taken right in front of us, so they decided to get some extra cash and move back

Miscellaneous:
-Agents and players know Utah is a great place to train and improve, word gets around that Quin is fair to the young guys...
-Will Dante be a starter? - didn't answer, but said that there will be more competition on the roster this year and the players know that we need reinforcements. Quin will be the one deciding who starts and who finishes and who plays.
-We plan on being VERY active in FA
-Dante's cleaned up his shot, but there are still some steps. This is a summer-long project to get him back to where he needs to be.
-Punted on questions of whether he's relieved that Exum and Hayward won't be in Rio and whether he prefers France qualifies to Rio.

The bolded part to me is the most consequential part of this interview. I think we can expect at least 2 FA/trade additions to the team.
I've had a sneaky feeling since the end of last season that this may be the year DL really starts to put this team together. They have had time to evaluate most of the youth we had, and he has been talking alot about how he wants vets to come in and complement the foundation. It's going to be a Intresting offseason for us.

The Jazz will keep Hayward and he will opt out at the end of the next season without nothing in exchange.

Okc traded Ibaka for Oladipo, Ilayasova and Sabonis!

After listening to that, I very seriously doubt Hayward leaves.

I hope you're right. I'm just not sure what quality free agents want to sign only a 2 year deal when some teams will be spending so much.

Players entering their prime that realize the 94 Mill cap now will be 120 Mill in 2 years

Well, it seemed like other GMs were able to do it. I just think his heart/mind wasn't into doing it. The reality is that Jazz have a full roster so adding more young guys this year wasn't as important to him probably. Jazz have three picks next year.

The annoying part of it is the fake "we tried" excuse. I'd rather just have him state the Jazz are moving to the next stage which is to bring in additional veteran help.

Simply because moves were not made does not mean he wasn't active. I read yesterday that he had 5 calls waiting at one point

Dennis has a good track record drafting 12th and lower. If he thought there was not a decent player available I trust that. But if you think they're was one who is it? I was upset Thon went so high because in my mind he was that late round gem. Not as high on Skal

Lol I thought he actually says way more then KOC used too. Maybe I don't pay that good of attention

I like the idea of Pau Gasol and I agree with your criteria. He has a player option for 2016-17 at $7.7m (https://www.spotrac.com/nba/chicago-bulls/pau-gasol/). He will turn 36 years old in July. I’m not sure how much he has left in him as far as on court contributions are concerned. I think if we bring in a guy like him it’s for the veteran leadership his experience provides and the poise he instills. He has certainly had a successful career, but is he willing and able to accept a mentoring role with limited playing time? For the Jazz?

If he opts out of his deal then do we offer him 2 years 15-18m with 10-12m paid out in 2016-2017? What is a player like him worth to us? If he opts in then I suppose we see how interested Chicago is in our selection of mediocre back up PGs and Pleiss or Whithey.

A draft pick did nothing for us now or in the future. We don't have room money wise, we don't have room for another young guy who won't contribute for 2-3 years. Even Chris Johnson brings more value than a rookie at 12, because he can play 3-5 mins a night if needed.

I'm glad they traded the pick. 12 picks are a huge gamble and we got a starting PG for that pick. We won that trade by a landslide. It was the right thing to do. I've always said that draft picks are over-rated and that I will take a proven NBA guy over a draft pick. Every single time...well...maybe not every single time. The #1 pick would be about the only thing to change that. Or a draft like LeBron's. But those are rare.
