Do the Jazz abandon "the process" this summer?

It's not acceptable for a fringe playoff team such as the Jazz to stand pat with $30,000,000 in room..

Trading future assets for rentals isn't the answer either..

Maxxing Harrison Barnes is the move.. That'd IMO be adding talent while abiding by the process

Harrison Barnes is garbage.

I don't think adding a couple of vets is "abandoning the process." DL's goal was to build through picks. He's done that by getting Exum, Hood, Gobert, Lyles and the pick this summer. Only misstep has been Burke. Hayward and Favors have developed in- house.

Now he upgrades over guys like Booker and CJ by adding talented vets. No team in the league has 13 purely organic players. SA has signed FA's and made trades; so has GS.

He's under utilized because the Warriors have an embarrassment of riches, Barnes is capable of justifying such a contract, or I wouldn;t suggest it.. 15ppg and40% from 3.. Just look at his USG rate..

He isn't good. The only reason his numbers look moderately decent is because opposing defenses are more worried about Curry, Thompson, and Green. When he's on the court without them, he severely struggles. According to ESPN RPM, Joe god damn Ingles has a more positive impact than Harrison Barnes.

Paying Barnes the max would be unbelievably stupid.

The next step in the process is supplementing what you have with players obtained through trade/free agency that fill roles or skill sets you need.

Yea, personally I always assumed that would be the next step in 'The Process™'

Wow?!?! More then a little puzzled by this. In the scenario that we sign him to a max deal, do u have him starting or coming off the bench? Who does he start over, or u really want the Jazz to pay max money to a bench player?

I'd rather not spent huge money till I see how Exum plays this coming year.

I tend to agree with PGAB on this. I don't think Harrison Barnes is the only viable option, but he is certainly one of them--and one that is actually realistic.

I think the FO will continue to build it's core thru the draft & player development but, in an attempt to convince Hayward to re-sign, will upgrade CJ & possibly one of Mack/Neto with veterans. Our lack of depth (primarily due to injuries) & veteran leadership was a large factor in missing the playoffs this year.

We can't miss the playoffs again & still expect to retain Hayward without massively overpaying him (which may not even work if we're in the lottery again & we may have to do regardless). I expect DL to adjust accordingly, especially after hearing his comments regarding placing too much focus on chemistry during this past off-season.

My question is inspired by 2 things:

1. Philly abandoned the process before seeing it through do to lack of playoff appearances

Philly's made basically zero progress in four years. That's why they abandoned the process. That said, they're idiots for doing so with the number of picks they have coming in and by bringing in Colangelo's son who's awful. Nepitism at its worst.

The beauty of this offseason the jazz ate at a crossroads, as far as the "process" goes.

They could trade out some assets to bring in a serious #1 option.

They could go after some vets to round out the bench.

They could spend big and hope they dont mess with chemistry.

They could continue with the youth movement ans development.

We've got to look to upgrade CJ, Ingles and Booker. In that order.

I'm quite alright with getting someone instead of Mack as well. Mack wont get it done against he elite teams.
He is not the answer.

how do we afford paying barnes the max, when we will need to resign hayward, favors and gobert - committing to barnes for the 25 mill a year he wants we make that nigh impossible wont it? barnes is a good 3rd or 4th best player on a team, but we dont wont him breaking up the team because of his salary do we? PGAB - have u done the money numbers on this? didnt some guy do an article showing it would be hard for utah to keep its players even without barnes coming in with a max 25 mill per year deal?

LONG POST...

Yea Barnes is a poor mans Hayward. We don't need to MAX a 2nd/3rd option guy. We are already doing that with GTime.

Honestly, look at the Raptors. They were a "good" team with star potential already on the team in Derozan. They went and got a good, now great PG in Lowrey and then made their bench one of the best in the league. They went from almost relevant to relevant to the 2 seed.

First and foremost add to the bench. Keep in mind, the Jazz will have to over pay a bit to get guys to SLC.
Back up center: UFA Timofey Mozgov -3 year 18mil(6 mil a year) or UFA Jordan Hill - 3 year 18 mil(6 mil a year)
Back up wing players: UFA Allen Crabbe - 4 year 32 mil(8 mil a year) or UFA Mirza Teletovic - 3 years 27 mil(9 mil a year) ::BOTH SHOOTERS::
Back up PG or starter til Exum is fully healthy:
Jordan Clarkson - RFA 4 year 56mil (14 mil a year)
**He can play the point or the two. The Lakers have a choice. They can build chemistry between Clarkson and Russell and spend the 12-14 mil a year it will take to keep Clarkson or they will go out and spend the Clarkson money on proven stars. I bet on them going and getting stars.

Potential lineups:
Exum/Clarkson
Hood/Burks/Clarkson/
Hayward/Crabbe/Ingles
Favors/Lyles
Gobert/Mozgov/Withey

You are now able to draft best available and hope you find a star in the draft instead of drafting to fill a need.

Jazz have 30 mil in cap space. This has them spending 28 mil to fill out bench with the potential of a star or two in Crabbe and Clarkson. This fits the Jazz philosophy while also spending money. Thoughts?
