Gamethread: Utah @ Jeffersons Tonight 5pm or some such time

I edited my post.

That's true. It's a funny statistical set up.

It's more likely that you get a top 3 pick then not a top 3 pick, but it's more likely you get the 4th pick than getting any of the other ones. Anyway... my point is tanking our way to worst pick is hardly a sure thing... remote from it, even.

How can any jazz fan be happy about the direction this season and franchise is going?

Because they think one of two things.

1. The Jazz can somehow gain a superstar without a top pick in this draft, and win a championship that way. (wtf)

2. They're fine with never winning a championship. (wtf x 100)

Life's too short to watch teams lose game after game. I want the Jazz to win a title, sure. But I'm busy and have things going on and like to watch my favorite players have a good game (ie Burke). I understand the hypertension arm-chair Mr. Burns style GMing and strategic plotting that is all over this board - I used to be a complete subscriber. And it's a totally legitimate way to be a fan.. I'm not bagging on it at all.

Still I just don't know what you want us to do. Bench Burke? I'm sorry but I won't agree.

Also I'm just not convinced that tanking hardcore style is the golden goose that it is being made to be. We've jumped onto the idea and gripped it to death. I will own up if this backfires on us next year. Just a different perspective. Don't rip me apart.

It's not a sure fire way of becoming a contender, no, but I honestly beleive it's the only chance we have.

I firmly believe you have to have a legit superstar to win a title. The Jazz aren't getting one through free agency, no one is going to simply trade one to us, so that leaves the draft.

People who bag on the tank never answer the question that should come up in their mind if they don't want to tank, and that is this: what course of action--other than tanking--is going to make the Jazz a contender?

Draft better? Malone and Stockton weren't top 10 picks. I understand the flaw in this... it's much more likely to get players like that with higher picks. But (this is dead horse territory, I understand) there's plenty of examples in modern NBA of game changers not drafted top 3.

Also... I'm pro tank. Or not "anti-tank". Just not going to be upset when Burke plays great and we win. We have a Western gauntlet to run through. Almost every single Western team we will play will be in an intense battle for position and making the playoffs in the first place. Eastern teams play each other. Guess you tank peeps should just hope Burke gets injured... that's what you really want.

Great post. Some of us actually enjoy watching well-played basketball. Plenty of teams get stuck playing garbage basketball for years, collecting top 5 picks and going nowhere. I'm all for the direction the team's taking right now, but if losing 50+ games extends beyond 2 seasons, I may stop watching.

In the 2004-2005 season (that led to DWill) the Jazz had the 4th worst record and fell to the 6th pick, combine that with losing what seems like every coin flip (most notably the GSW vs Toronto one that allowed GSW to keep their pick instead of it coming to the Jazz) the Jazz are WAY overdue for some lottery luck. Heck the last time I can remember they had any luck was way before the current ping pong ball lotto setup, and those would've lead to Dominique Wilkins (traded to keep the franchise in UT) and the other would've led to Magic Johnson (pick was previously traded to LA).

So maybe it is some kind of pre draft order jinx payback for those 2 picks being traded. At any rate the Jazz are probably around the 3rd-5th worst team most likely IMO and well I'm just hoping karma pays the Jazz back for trying to rebuild the right way.

I want my team to be in control of its own destiny. Hoping that some diamond in the rough falls and falls through the draft and that we happen to be the team that picks him isn't any logical way to go about building a title contender. But I'm sure you agree since you say you're pro tank in a sense.

Betting on the lottery is the exact opposite of controlling your destiny. You are putting your hopes on some ping pong balls.

I agree in the sense that I ****ing want Jabari hardcore. Lol. So yeah.

We moved up the year we got the 3rd pick and got Kanter

Yeah but I attributed that to it was the Nets pick........ and it didn't fit my oh wows me Stern can lick my ping pong balls attitude post.

Also that was the year Cleveland had the first pick (thanks to LAC) and the 4th pick (their own). Speaking of them getting the 4th pick they had the 2nd worst record that year and that fell to the 4th pick and Minni who had the worst record got the 2nd pick, so again you can't count on the lottery the 7th worst record (LAC) got the 1st overall pick.

I guess my point being is DL constructed this roster and has set this team on it's course and it is still going according to his plan IMO. The season is long there will be many ups and downs and you can't get caught up and over react especially this early. If things look like they're going to good like getting the 9-14 pick range I'm sure he'll step in and trade Marvin and RJ and other vets, which he may try and do anyway if he can get any future assets no matter how small they may be.

How many fans will lose interest because of the endless mediocrity? The jazz under the Al Jefferson/Millsap Regime were incredibly mediocre. As was fan attention. I never saw anyone get very excited over the Jazz. The ESA got "sellouts" but they weren't the sellouts they were getting under boozer and Deron or Malone and Stockton. I saw more green seats the year we made the 8th seed over any year prior.

To me, if the jazz don't at least get a super star this year, then they must be a solid playoff team next year. A mediocre off season drafting another role player combined with another 20-30 win season next year will kill this franchise. Few people give a damn right now. Even fewer will give a damn next year.

Jazz need Jabari just as much as Cleveland needed... And still needs Lebron.

Otherwise, sell the franchise. Or blow this team up (again) and truly tank hoping for a savior in the next few drafts. This team needs a franchise player.

I thought this season was going to be a win-win every game this year. But it seems more like Lose-Lose with the amount of bitching when we are winning or losing
