houston's plan b?

somebody mentioned this in the howard trade thread, but since it's a separate topic, i felt like bringing this up...

houston planned their whole summer around how to get a shot at dwight, and now it sounds as though they have officially missed out. their roster is kind of a mess because of the way they were prepping for a potential dwight deal, and i wonder if they have a contingency plan.

their head coach has spoken very highly of al jefferson on several occasions, and al plays the right position to take the place of howard in their plans -- but at a significantly lower cost. their only veteran big man on the roster is omer asik. they also have motiejunas, patterson and white, but they obviously were planning on getting another starting big, and al might fit that bill, especially given mchale's man-crush on him from their days together in minny.

based on what they were ready to give up for dwight, what do you think they'd give for al? less, obviously, but by how much? and given our depth at everywhere but PG, i'm not even 100% sure they have what we want... but are there any scenarios that would be realistic? as i've said a time or two, my ideal haul for al would be another big man (somebody to come off the bench with kanter) and a playmaking PG so we have someone with a slightly different skill-set than mo. not sure i see that answer on their roster, but i would definitely pick up the phone if they called.

IMO, we're doing a major disservice to the future of our frontcourt if we bring everybody back. Give me TJones or RWhite plus a lightly protected future first and I'll skip merrily.

Al's not getting traded, Kanter's not ready....blah blah blah.......

kanter's not ready to start, but that doesn't mean kanter's not ready to see an increased role, maybe the 20 mpg range that favors was in last year. and even if he's not, favors should be in the 30 mpg range, which means you could replace al with someone to fit the 3rd/4th big role and be just fine.

houston's not my ideal fit because i don't see that guy, but houston may be the most eager buyer out there right now.

i hate building trades because it's so easy to attack the little details... so don't take this as an actual trade proposal, but for the general idea of a 3-team trade.

jazz give up jefferson, get jose calderon (10.5M expiring and the ideal guy to back up mo) and whichever rookie big houston will give up: donatas/jones/white.

houston gives up said rookie big and kevin martin, gets back jefferson.

toronto gives up calderon, gets kevin martin.

raptors, as much they like jose, would at least listen because they don't have any perimeter scorers. houston only gives up martin + a young big to get al, which is far less than what they were offering to get dwight. jazz get 2-3 deep everywhere:

favors, kanter
sap, white, evans
marvin, (hayward), carroll
hayward, burks, foye, murph
mo, calderon, tinsley/watson

holy cow, i'd love that roster.

realistically, I don't think we can get that much for Al. It does look good, though.
If we can get a future stretch-4 for Favors and Kanter + a late-lottery or non-lottery first, then I think we've done well for ourselves.

it's easy to think that way, but realistically al is the best player in that trade. houston's not going to need all 9 of their young bigs (asik, white, jones, motiejunas, greg smith, patrick patterson, marcus morris, josh harrellson and jajuan johnson), especially if they have al. they basically came right out and said that they were stockpiling those guys to use for trades. and toronto just picked up lowry and lucas III at the point, so i'm not sure why that's getting too much of a haul for partin with the best player in the trade.

dude, I like your trade. A lot. It gives us what we need without ****ing us over for a free agent haul next summer. It's great. If it happens, then we would be well-positioned to make a good run this year.

well yeah... i like the general idea, but who knows if they're even talking. my point is just that houston is obviously in buyer mode, which is why they stockpiled 9 guys who play two positions. obviously some of those are going to be used as assets and never wear rocket red, and i think almost all of them would make a good 4th big in the rotation.

There's a reason they call it plan b. And it's as much for us as it is for them.

If we can squeeze White or Jones out of Houston, I'd be ecstatic.

Also, this would be a pretty great way for the new GM to start his career off with us.

One comment I read was now that Howard is in LA, OKC probably won't want to part with Perkins (since he really slows him down). So, an offer for Harden is looking more feasible.

Another thing to consider with this trade is Iggy going to DEN leaves them at about $58M in salary (about $13M) below the tax. It would probably be overpaying, but we could possibly pry Lawson away if we make him a big offer.

Personally, I think we're learning that in order for small market teams to get a RFA we have to overpay, and considering I think Lawson is still highly underrated, I would be on board with us making a toxic offer to get him.
