What's new

I need a new car: crowd sourcing JFC for recommendations and warnings

If I was you, I'd go with a 2016 Chevy Duramax fully loaded and lifted. Chevy's are great trucks. Lots of power.

4 runners are gutless. They look ok, and run forever, but feel cheap and are slow and don't tow heavy **** good.

I guess it comes down to what do you need more. A truck that actually does truck stuff, or a truck that can rock crawl and get good gas mileage while doing it.

Buy the real truck (a chevy) then buy the Toyota too, and tow the Toyota to where you want to play with it. Makes sense to me. Buy both.

Granted, for towing heavy loads a 4runner is not ideal, but I would not say they are gutless. My V8 4runner 0-60 time is .1 second slower than a duramax. It has plenty of power for a SUV.

My wife's limited 4runner does not feel cheap to me. Super solid and rattle free. My 03 feels a bit cheaper as far as dash material, etc., but is also rattle free and over 10 years old with 150k miles. To me cheap involves materials and quality of build/assembly. I drove an 80k bmw that was one of the cheapest feeling vehicles I have ever driven.

My Dad has a 3 year old F250 that rattles and squeaks to no end.

If zomeone is considering a new 4runner, check out the Lexus GX460, same frame, different body and V8. Not a whole lot more to buy.

Still looking for the right car. I've been exhaustively hunting for the right 4runner, and getting everything to line up is taking a bit more time and repetitive searching than I was hoping.

Here's a question for y'all:

What about Nissan Xterras? There isn't the same feverish devotion to them as to 4runners. They are easier to find with fewer miles and the price isn't driven extraordinarily high. From what I can tell, the '05 featured a lot of improvements. Fish, you have one, right? What do you think?

Anybody else have some feedback? thanks again.

I like my xterra allot. Real versatile.
Have not had any issues with it yet but only have about 42,000 miles on it currently.
I'm real rough with it and it has held up to the abuse. Real basic though as far as fancy electronics, dashboard material, bells and whistles and all that.

I got the off-road version so I have a bit more clearance than normal, bilstein high performance shocks, skid plate, off road lights up top, rear locking differential and a few other things.

I would buy another but I would still rather have a 4 runner. Just couldn't afford one with the low mileage I was looking for (bought my X with only about 4500 miles on it)

I like xterras. The main drawback I see is that they might not last quite as long, and the mpgs aren't as good. My friends who have them have loved them. I think you should try and get one made 05 or newer like you said.

A new Duramax Silverado is going to cost you up to 60 grand.

I've been doing snow removal and maintenance my whole life and have used every truck you can think of, mainly Dodge though. My recommendation would be a new Chevy Colorado. They are much better than the new Tacoma, far better engine, newer platform, etc. a Duramax Colorado will get pretty costly though, I'd just go for a gasser.

What's a gasser?

Also, I may buy a mammoth truck in about two years. Are there any huge trucks that 1) comfortably seat four and also have a little bit of room for luggage or something behind the second row and 2) get decent gas milage...like over 20mpg? The government standards have changed and I'm hoping by around 2020, we see some of the behemoth s getting upward of 28-30mpg on the highway.

My ram 2500 diesel gets 23 mpg average and seats 6. I had to modify it though to get the mpg up. It was averaging 18 stock.

Thanks. Yeah, I looked online afterward and there are lot of the bigger ones that get 23-28mpg. I was surprised and thought they got more like 12-18.

Yeah, lift your truck really high to make sure everyone knows how tiny your penis is.

By gasser I just mean gasoline engine. If you're going heavy duty, I'd recommend any 2003+ Dodge with the Cummins in it. Most reliable truck I've used.

Dudes, after all of this talk....

I ended up getting my Subaru combed over by two different mechanics (both of whom are highly regarded). The consensus was that if I put $800 into ball joints, breaks, etc., then there was no reason to think that I couldn't run her up to 300,000. She's otherwise in great shape. Got the work done yesterday and she feels tight.

The only other work that could be done is to replace the valve gaskets on both sides (it's an H6). But, the leak is very very slow, so I'm going to drive for the next 6 months while I think about it.

BUT! This thread isn't a waste. My girlfriend has a Mazda hatchback that we might sell now that the Sub has a clean bill of health. I'll be referencing this thread when it's time to replace it.

Thanks again!

Ok, I'm back on the car search. I want to get one by October or so. I'm still pretty sauced up about 3rd generation 4Runners. But I'm wondering if any of you know anything about 4th generation 4runners. Especially you, b_line.

thanks.

I want this car with every fiber of my being.

Stick with Subaru - no one ever seems to have problems with them.

Great vehicles. Get the V8 03-05. V6 is prone to head gasket failure. 06-09 v8s have aip issue, but can be bypassed.

Definitely skip the 03 and 04 v6. Only has a 4 spd transmission. All other models have 5 speed. V8 has timing belt service due at 90k miles. Keep this in mind when buying as it is an additional $1000 expense.
