Jazz Officially Matched Hayward According to Woj

Ehhh, it was a bad extension. There's no reason to extend a 30-year old role player that didn't even do his role - or at least what should be his role (protecting the rim) - well. Especially since he wasn't exactly a poster-boy for good health, either.
Memo missed only 22 games through his first 5 seasons with the Jazz, averaging 33 minutes per game. His role was to spread the floor on those strangely built teams, which he did very well.

I didn't like the extension at the time, but it wasn't horrible.

Nope. His extension covered 2010/11 and 2011/12 and was signed in the Summer of 2009. His injury happened at the end of the 2009/10 season.

Many of us thought it made more sense to wait until the end of the 2009/10 season before re-signing Memo. It wasn't a bad extension when it was signed, but it wasn't a no-brainer either (IMO).

I remember questioning it but then reading something from Marc stein that was professing the genius of O'Conner in locking up our before the market got to him. Good extension or not, that team had gone as far as they were ever getting with memo starting at center next to boozer.

At the cost of any possibility of a good defensive team? That's stupid. Pure and simple. And that doesn't even address the idea of a team in one of the smallest markets in pro sports already being in cap hell, then extending a 30-year with nagging injuries.

The team was built that way though. They needed shooting because they had boozer and ak locked up and Williams was not exactly Stephen curry. Also, pre injury memo was an all star.

In the 3 seasons leading up to Memo's extension, these were the Jazz's per possession defensive ranks:

06/07: 18th
07/08: 12th
08/09: 10th

Ronnie Brewer and AK played the most minutes (per game) on the wing for the 08/09 team (CJ, at best an average shooter, was 4th after Korver). If you replace Memo with a defensive 5, those teams lose more in offense than they gain in defense.

Terrible move. This is going to cost us Kanter or Burks. But Gordon is our guy now, and I would love to be proven wrong and have him play like a max guy consistently. I hope he doesn't get booed and fans realize it's not his fault that he is overpaid. His psyche is fragile enough as it is. This contract makes me love Favors even more.

Terrible move by the Jazz. Lets just tell all the teams we will match anything so teams will offer max money. Why? Because we would rather pay max money for someone that had the worst season in his career. Jordan sticking it the Jazz still 16 years later. The bad thing is the Jazz is bending over for them and saying "I dare ya"

Just when I start feeling like the Jazz have figured it out, they do something stupid like this. I am not shocked or surprised. Seriously, if the Jazz wanted to keep Hayward then why not give him $14 million. There is no way that this doesn't affect how we sign other players.

What makes it even dumber is if you told every team you would match then why not pay him $14 million. This is like showing your cards in poker and then making a bet with nothing in your hand and thinking you can bluff the other players. This is pure insanity.

Even if Hayward plays a little better he isn't worth the max. He has to dominate and become a mulit-year all-star to be worth that contract. I can see him have one great game and all his supporters will say I told you so. Then they will ignore the other four games where he is mediocre. He shares some of the blame. Dude could have taken the Jazz offer because that is what is closer to his value. Even if Hayward plays well and we end up losing a player or two because of it I will then say I told you so. We are going to have to do this again next year because if I am Kanter or Burks there is no way I take a contract. I test the market.

Oh.. I see.

He's old.

Theres alot of 'old' one and dones this year though. Karl Towns and Cliff Alexander are both a month older than Jahlil, Oubre's a week older.

Theres only 4 Lotto picks on DX's mock born in '96, Mudiay, Johnson, Winslow and Tyus Jones

That wasn't ever memo's role.

No one thought memo was a rim protector. No one.

If you thought that was his role then you're dumber than you look.

His role was to spread the floor because our SF at the time was defensively minded and offensively challenged. Memo fulfilled his offensive role brilliantly. At one point, he was probably the most offensively versatile center in the league. He could drive, pass, shoot, post up, and wasn't nearly as soft as his critics made him out to be. He sadly was a little undersized and not very athletic. He maximized his potential.. Hayward has not.

Memo was a top offensive player at his position and an all-star and championship player.

Much more than Hayward has accomplished at this point in his career.

Stellar defense.

I'm more just pissed that this team will never be GREAT.. and we are more of less stuck with it. (I'm being a bit dramatic, I know.. but it's kind of fun.)

I don't think you are being dramatic. Reality sucks. This is such a dumb move. I am sure Hornet fans are celebrating in the streets.

Not a huge fan of the move, but it's here now so we need to deal with it.

Ok Hayward what are you going to do to earn that MAX? You better prove your worth.

See here is the problem, Hayward should have already earned the max. There is nothing he could do but become a 4 time all-star and lead the Jazz to the promise land. Not going to happen.

That's exactly their error. The dynamic of having to keep the worst starting defensive center in the NBA because he could spread the floor for wings that couldn't shoot but could defend was why the Jazz couldn't substantively improve. No matter how perfect the Jazz executed offensively, the other team just had to go zone/go under screens/pack-in-the-paint to visibly alter the Jazz's offense and all they had to do on the other end was drive to the paint. Korver and Matthews were good pieces if that team had someone to protect the rim. I don't know who it would've been, that's dabbling in fantasty. But I'll play: Brendan Haywood? Emeka Okafor? Tyson Chandler? There were some guys out there. There was also that kid from Congo whose name I can't remember that the Jazz passed on so that they could draft who was supposed to be ANOTHER Memo (and isn't).

You don't become the best without taking risks (or rather, risk changing something that works pretty well but no one believes will get the job done). The Jazz refused to. It's really that simple.

Not sold on Hayward signing, but how does this matching keep us from being Great...

Or in other words what course if action would you have taken?

Well Kanter was one of the worst players in the NBA last year.....so there's that angle.
