Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

I'd be interested to hear what people's concerns with Robert Williams are. Assuming that he can improve his shooting, he would be an awesome backup 4/5.

I mean he already missed the conference call this morning... so that might be a reason... he is immature and has some off court issues. Not sure how serious.

He's 6'4 in shoes. He is going to have to defend guys 6'8 every night. Unless you put him on super quick point guards. His fancy shuttle time in the combine doesn't convince me.

Unless you think he will be defending the 3, the average 2 is 6_5. How many 6_8 2s are in the league?

I kind of disagree that Allen doesn’t have a high ceiling. Just gonna throw that out there.

People call him safe because he’s a 4 year player at a big program...I think the NBA game will be good to him.

Seems like the Jazz are always stocked with people who would be awesome if they could improve their shooting. What we've needed is another person (or two) who actually can shoot. The way the Jazz move the ball we need guys who can/will take that shot when it comes open. Too many times we see our guys pass on the shot and give it to someone too late in the clock or in a bad position. That's why I think someone like Allen could be good for the Jazz.

Came to JF just for the lolz at all the bitching about this pick.

Was not disappointed.

Considering that we were drafting at #21, I think this pick was just fine. Utah needs to replace some of the shooting they lost with Hood. The worst thing they could have done is draft another guy who needs to learn how to shoot. So they got a guy who can shoot the 3 and plays with some fire at #21.

Good pick.

The Jazz weren't swinging for the fences. They wanted to draft a guy with a projectable role with the current group and someone who was a proven shooter. I think they really think highly of Grayson Allen. Given what the Jazz were looking for in a player, I could believe that Allen was in their top 8 - 10 targets.

Kinda reminds me of the Stockton selection. He was drafted to be Green’s backup, little did they know he’d become the greatest pure pg in the history of the nba. I’m guessing they weren’t swinging for the fences then either.

WTF is that and why does he look like Andy Larsen 15 years and 65 lbs from now?

Bro... study internet history... it's a classic. Guy is a grown man talking about pro wresling... its great... he was on Tosh early on.

I think the average to slightly below average physical tools are another issue. Meaning measurement stuff... I know he is athletic. I did not include hand pads though... those are elite.

For some strange reason, reading through last year's draft grades from Bleacher Report gives me some comfort. It reminded me of how little we really know about these guys before their first NBA game. Allen wasn't the guy I wanted, but I'm stepping away from the ledge and reserving judgement for at least a season ... although it would be easier if he was 6'7" ... and I'm not even thinking about where he fits into our rotation.
The Utah Jazz didn't exactly need another ace defender to put in front of Rudy Gobert, but it can't hurt. Especially at this point in the draft, where it's no longer a big reach to take Donovan Mitchell.

After all, an elite defender is just what Mitchell has become. It may take some time for his offense to come around—though you shouldn't be worried about his development going down a Michael Kidd-Gilchrist route—but he's already one of the best perimeter defenders in this year's class.

Mitchell can capably parlay his athleticism into successful slashes. He's a solid passer, giving him the ability to slide over to the 1 in a pinch, though his natural position remains shooting guard. However, it's still his defense that made him one of this year's fastest-rising prospects, vaulting him from the tail end of the first 30 picks into the lottery.

If you need a comparison, think about a more polished version of Norman Powell. The three-point stroke is a bit more advanced, but the athleticism and positional versatility on the preventing end check many of the same boxes.

This is a boom-or-bust pick for Utah, as well as a sliiiight reach, and that depresses the grade a bit. But if he works out, the Jazz could soon pair an elite three-and-D youngster with Gordon Hayward (maybe?) and Gobert (definitely). Here's hoping they don't ask him to run the point if George Hill leaves in free agency, though.

Grade: C+

I think for a combo guard his size is fine.

He’s an athletic shooter who has an off the dribble game, and can find open guys fairly well. Plays incredibly hard, and has the tools to be at least an average defender. We will never have to question his effort.

At one point averaged 22/5/4 in the best conference in basketball on 47/42/84 shooting. Came in cold off the bench as a true freshman and won the Natty Champ for Duke. If you look at the resume, it’s pretty dang good.

I’m quite convinced he’ll become a fan favorite just for the amount of loose balls he dives after.

No need to be that reasonable. I figure by the end of the first half of summer league game 1 we'll be able to judge his entire career. By the time pre-season starts the Jazz will probably either have him in the starting lineup or have traded him to Golden State.

Couple interesting tweets

A team with Bagley, Carter, Trent Jr and others was significantly better with Allen on the floor

I'm writing off the Junior year... there were injuries and other things going on... I hope he is the guy we saw as a Sophmore. If he shoots 40% from three it is a really good pick. Our guys have been successful helping guys learn how to finish at the rim. I hope he is good enough defensively... he may be a bigger Neto there... in good position but gets scored on and doesn't really help your defense. Coming off the bench this isn't as big of a concern.
