What's new

Lyles is the pick at 12

The overall reaction to this pick is why I hate Jazz forums.

Yes, it's overboard. DL is the same guy who picked Rudy Gobert at #27.

There are probably 4 or 5 potential star players in this draft and they all went top 5. If we wanted one of them we would have had to swap out an existing core piece.

Lyles can be a good player.

BTW, the more I watch of him the more I like his shooting stroke. It looks pretty good, I don't know why his jump shooting %s were so bad.

Lyles is several months younger than Exum. Give him 2 years to really start showing what he can be. I don't think he's ever bothered to work out that much. The natural ability is legit.

I think if the Jazz didn't pick Lyles, they might actually have picked Dekker ahead of Booker, but that's just a hunch.

This.
I was just watching the video posted by pgab and his stroke is great looking.

Same guy who moved up to get Trey Burke

Guys we could compare Lyles to potentially based on size and talent level (give or take)....

- Boris Diaw
- Juwan Howard
- David Lee
- Carlos Boozer
- Greg Monroe

He should be a solid rotation player. He's a guy who could potentially get offered a $50 million contract after his rookie deal.

He might turn out to be better than all those guys.

Yeah, and most of us were extremely happy when that happened. He picked a need instead of BPA, and it failed. This time he picked a BPA over need. How about we wait and see what happens before we go about killing ourselves?

If anything, the Trey Burke pick just goes to show that we don't know **** until the player actually gets on the court and plays.

Edit: Ew, this was my 1,000th post. Yelling at dumb Jazz fans who over react to stupid things.

I wonder if it had anything to do with playing the three and just generally shooting from places he had less practice from.

Sorry about misremembering Booker's wingspan - I think the bigger concern would probably be that compared to Klay he showed very little of anything besides spot up shooting.

For some reason he's a better shooter off the bounce. I think somebody posted numbers saying he shot 45% off the bounce while he was one of the worst shooters on catch and shoot shots. It's weird... it usually is the other way around.

I wonder if that stems from playing HS with the ball in his hands all the time. Pretty much nobody is actually better off the bounce which makes you think he can probably improve that percentage on catch and shoot quite a bit.

It's funny because I like this pick a lot more this morning as well.

Lyles was #9 on Chad Ford's final draft big board.

He has the 7th highest percentage to become a star according to fivethirtyeight.

He has the 2nd lowest chance of becoming a bust according to ESPN.

It wasn't the sexy pick like Booker or Oubre would have been, but he seemed to have the highest floor w/ the highest ceiling combination of anybody left at 12.

Now we have a nice solid rotation:

Guards - Exum, Burke, Hanlan

Wings - Hayward, Burks, Hood

Bigs - Gobert, Favors, Lyles

It also seemed to me that Utah needed a big more than a wing going into the draft anyways. If Lyles was BPA + he fills a need, it was a perfect choice.

He looks quite comfortable dribbling in the highlights. I only saw him play two or three times, and he didn't dribble much - just hit a couple mid-range J's and made winning passes. It is really impressive seeing a 6'10'' 19 year old catch the ball off a pin down and immediately drive the ball like a guard or wing.

Maybe because he attended Burks basketball camp lol

It's a bit weird, because I've noticed the same thing - he has the habit of taking a one-dribble pullups even when he's open and doesn't need to dribble... precisely the way Burks does it. I hope they can uproot that habit early.

The defense never expects it

Let me be clear. I don't think he's going to bust. I just don't foresee him being anything more than Boris Diaw today (nice guy to come off the bench). He'll be a good role player coming off our bench.

However, I think I would have preferred Booker because of his alleged elite shooting ability. While Lyles does nothing great or poorly at least Booker can provide us with elite shooting. At the worst, he's Korver. Right? At the best? Klay Thompson?

Lastly, I think The Book's contributions are very underrated by this board. His energy and fire combined with the attitude he displayed in those tweets at Kanter is what this team severely lacks. We have a team of mild mannered talented youngsters. Exum, Burks, Lyles, Hood, Faves, etc could all date my daughter (if I had one).

Gobert and The Book? I dunno. They've got that "prick" attitude that this team lacks. Every now and again our players need to Forget about the techs and Mormon Utah image and kick someone's ***. Gobert and The Book provide that. Lyles does not.

Gobert and increased role of The Book ignited our run last year IMO. Much like Antoine Carr, The Book's contributions were are seen on and off the court, not in the box score.

Booker could turn out fine, but there is no way his FLOOR is Kyle Korver.
