Memo traded to NJ

This trade makes the Nets in great shape to go after Dwight Howard. This what they will have in expiring contracts after this season:

Humphries 9 million
Okur 10.8
Stephens 2.5
Farmer 4
Gaines 1

So over 27 million in cap for the Nets, if Deron opts out like 40 million. Reading the Nets site most of them are very happy with the trade. The only thing they are unhappy with is missing out on AK.

They didn't send anyone out in the trade so how exactly does this trade help them financially in acquiring Howard any more than not trading for Okur?

It helps then in the fact that it doesn't hurt them. :p
Exactly. Nets are able to fill the void left by Lopez' injury with a one-year rental. Jazz get minimal compensation because the trade helps them a ton financially - i.e. getting below the luxury tax line. The genius of the move by KOC is now they have, in effect, an "expiring" to trade either this year or early next season. So KOC can afford to be selective in seeking deals. My guess is the Jazz don't use the exception until the summer at the earliest; there's just too much financial benefit by having that salary off the books for this season.

This kills The Nets. It takes them out of the running if Orlando decides to trade Howard as opposed to letting him go as an FA. And even if they can somehow swing a 3-team deal, they have less cap space that would have had to been used to take Turkoglu's contract off Oralando's hands - which will most certainly part of any Howard deal under the sun.

The only thing this marginally helps The Nets with is wins and losses - which is something they're not overly concerned with in a rebuilding year.

Harris-30, Watson-18, Tinsley-DNP
Hayward-24, Burks-24, Bell-DOA
Miles-20, Hayward, 8, Millsap-12, Evans-8
Favors-28, Millsap-20
Jefferson-30, Favors-4, Kanter 14

Something like this would be ideal imo.

In a seson this compacted, I'd prefer no one played over 30 minutes.

Okur was a great outside shooter, good post defender, and fair rebounder. I don't think his game would have suffered much from being slowed, because it was never built on speed to begin with. However, our personnel has changed, and probably he didn't fit quite as well as previously. It's a good trade, but still one tinged with melancholy.

I never understood why the fans gave Okur's poor defense a pass.

They didn't, at least not in this forum.

Okur always guarded the post player on the other team, and did a decent job. Boozer guarded whichever big was more mobile, and did a less satisfactory job. That's why Boozer took more heat than Okur.

Hey, lets go shopping!

Can someone remind me who the jazz picked up with the Deron Trade Exception?
Or the Ronnie Brewer trade exception?
Or the Matt Harpring trade exception?

At least KOC got a lousy pick in return this time. And he cleared out the log-jam, anytime you have an abundance of servicable players at a postiton you should clear it out. The Jazz would not be in the position they are in today at sg had KOC not cleared out that log-jam.

Go Jazz!

this sucks, I'm looking big picture, we have lost coach Sloan, Coach Johnson, D-will, AK, Memo, Let Mathews go, I'd add Boozer but I hated him. Brewer, and the list goes on.......... All in a fairly short time. WTF are they thinking? I want to be positive but dang.
There's one you forgot who fell right at the beginning of this trend, and his loss is probably the biggest reason for all the rest: LHM.

It's crazy to see so much change in what had been such a stable franchise. That said, I'm fully on board and completely impressed with what KOC is doing.

Same as when we lost Stockton and Malone. I'm blinded when a player blows past Memo for an easy layup, because - well, its Memo and damnit I like Memo. I'm glad Kevin had the balls to do this...I would not have. It's like when my cat turned 16 and started losing weight rapidly and we all knew what needed to be done - but I didnt care, I had great memories of that cat and I when I looked at him I didnt see an old cat past his prime, I saw the cat how he used to be. No matter how much he would've screwed up and cost us points on the defensive end this year, I wouldn't have seen any of it. So I'm glad Kevin made room in the litter box for the new cats.

THAT was one of the best message board post's I've seen!!! WELL DONE!!!

You even liked the part where he compared our team to a litter box filled with cats? Damn. I hate cats.

When they decided to give Memo a two-year extension, they guaranteed Matthews would walk. That is what happens when they commit 8-figure salaries to flawed players. I hope the Jazz remember the lesson as Favors and Hayward reach the mid-point of their rookie contracts.

Not to mention saving $10M (or whatever that amounts to on a pro-rated basis).
Hate to see Memo go, but he was clearly not the Memo of old. WE all saw that in the 2 pre-season games. And who knows if the trade exception will be used. KOC could still pick up a player for $10M from a cash-strapped franchise.

dcfaithful...it means the Jazz can acquire a player for up to Memo's old salary without having to send anyone to the other team. In a normal trade, if team A is over the cap and will be receving player(s) in return, the traded salaries have to roughly match (within a tight percentage) or leave both teams below the cap. The Jazz used a trade exception (which we got from Chicago for Boozer) to acquire Al Jefferson. Minnesota wanted to shed salary so the only thing we gave them, other than picks, was Kosta. And that was because they insisted he be thrown in.

The exception might be pretty important. Several teams are trying to shed contracts to make a move for Howard and Paul. Jazz could take on a veteran and get high pciks in return. Or maybe have room to take on a "bad" contract that a team might want to include in a trade for someone else.
Good explanation, but where do these things come from? Would the Jazz just have the ability to create one out of thin air the way that Chicago and NJ have apparently done, or had those two teams previously acquired them from somewhere else?

Love the trade. Thank you KOC for forcing the hand of Corbin to give the kids time. That TE and Pick will both be good. High 2nd rounder in 2015 as they will still suck. Most interested in the TE. Memo I will miss your wife the most :(
I sincerely hope it's not a matter of KOC forcing Corbin's hand, but of the two of them working together.

So much for Kanter having mentor speaking his language. On the other hand that will give him more minutes to play. Now Nets just need to sign AK and they will have all starting five of former Jazz players... Deron, Deshawn, Ak, Humphries and Okur. Would beat any starting 5 current Jazz would assemble.
What are you smoking?

Hayward 20 / Harris 15
Bell 25 / Miles 13
Burks 15 / Hayward 20
Favors 35 / Evans 2
Jefferson 30 / Burks 10

Things are looking good. Hopefully we'll see more trades with other players happen when it's all said and done. KOC, you deserve my utmost slap on the cheek and back, good friend, here's to a returning victim, locked on sports.

At first I was thinking, can't this guy add to 48? Then I thought, 25 minutes for Bell? Then I wondered about Hayward playing 40 minutes a game split between starting point guard and backup small forward, and then I wondered why insult Evans with 2 minutes a game. Then I wondered who feels complimented by a slap on the cheek. Then I wondered what your victim comment was all about. And finally I noticed that you don't even know how to spell your first name right and everything became crystal clear.

He negged me too, but I've figured out a perfect solution for guys who do that to me: The ignore function. It's amazing how when you eliminate the posts of a few people this forum rapidly becomes more enjoyable.

What about the Carlos Boozer trade exception? That was also the only TPE over $10 million... until this one.
