Pop's Brilliance

You know, the Jazz don't look so bad now that the Clippers are being manhandled by the Spurs.
Blake Griffin got only 1 rebound yesterday.
Chris Paul- 8 TO's

Spurs vs. Jazz in 2 games---220-174
Spurs vs. Clips in 2 games-- 213-180

I suspect Paul and Griffin are hurting more than they are saying. Still, Pops is doing it again.

I believe it also to be a by-product of coaching and culture. Can Corbin coach like this while still instituting great, inherent trust and confidence in players? Nope. Hence, why JVG and SVG make sense.

It is a product of coaching and culture, Pops has his team believing that a 3-pt shot is a good shot so they don't hesitate to shoot. The Jazz players on the other hand have to think "is this a good shot?" and in the back of their head they've got to be worrying "if I miss this I could get chewed out or pulled". Shooting in the game is mental for most of these guys, and Pops has done a great job of letting his players shoot while training them not to be chuckers.

Watch the spurs players, they know that even on the fast break they should quickly run to the corners and that by being there just as a threat they are altering the game in a positive way for the spurs team. I'm guessing that Pops would pull them if they passed on more than one open three, because it doesn't matter if they hit or miss because the defense has to spread and make long rotations to cover those deep threes.

ESPN is now saying that Popovich is the SMARTEST coach in all of professional sports! And I don't see a flaw in that statement, do you? He's certainly the best at calling a time out, setting up a play.....and then making sure the play gets run successfully 90% of the time!

Can't completely agree with you there, as shooting or accurate shooting is also related to technique and being open or not distracted.

Thanks for supporting what I said. By rambling on much longer about it.

If Denver hadn't backed out of the proposed 3-team Kirilenko deal, Diaw likely would've been a Jazzman... It is amazing how we've come up just short so many times over the years, be it trades or drafting...
San Antonio has to be the best team at drafting, and has made some very smart trades to boot. Nobody can top some of the Laker heists via trades though...

Spurs have done a great job knowing who to get, but Duncan and Parker help to get buy-in from all the other players.

I really believe that it's a mixture of player and coach that creates success. It's amazing how people think that it's management that's so brilliant at trades and drafting. To say "man, how did we not see Diaw and Leonard, they're so good" without realizing that the system makes them seem like we missed out.

I have the feeling that if the AK trade happened, Diaw wouldn't be considered as good as he is now.

Spurs front office has done a good job, but scale back the praise a bit. They're not geniuses, they just have Pop, Parker and Duncan to thank.

Around 30:00 min. mark, Stephen A. Smith calls the Spurs the best team in basketball right now and that they would take care of the Heat almost effortlessly in the Finals.

That should greatly diminish the shame in losing to the Spurs in a sweep in the 1st round. The Clippers have a realistic chance of getting swept (although I think Spurs will win in 5 or 6, as good as they are, they're not going to go 16-0 this postseason).

But who got them Pop, Parker, and Duncan. Ooooops: the Spurs front office.

Clippers might win 1 game, might. The Spurs will probably win in 6 games in the Conference Finals to Lakers/Thunder.

Duncan, you mean the unquestionable #1 pick of the draft class that required a ton of luck to get? Yep props to a front office for choosing a guy that every other organization would have pick if they had the chance.

As for getting Parker, great find. Pop was a great signing. keep in mind that I think they're a great front office, I just think people in these forums are giving too much credit to the wrong people.

Holy ****, that epic run the Spurs just made (game 3) was incredible. Leonard was the steal of the draft. Defensive clinic by the entire Spurs team. Respect.

I just looked at the quarter-to-quarter box score break-up.

What the ****?

The Spurs looked as good on team defense as I've ever seen. End of story.

EDIT TO ADD: Obviously "team defense" doesn't explain it all. They were fabulous at individual defense, too. Leonard was locking down CP3 at times, for example.

P.S. Even if he's hurt, Griffin is very over-rated at this point in his career. He can be a miserable defender.

I like this. It's making us look 'ok' right now by being swept in the 1st round.

I hope Clips get swept, as well as Lakers/OKC.

Very true! If a player won't conform or fit into a "system" then it doesn't make any difference how talented he is or thinks he is, how high he can jump, how many tattoo's he's got, how many children he's conceived, going to another team is not going to make that much difference! If he's uncoachable, and way more than half of today's NBA is uncoachable, you going to have the pathetic product we have......teams winning games with more turnovers than assists......teams winning games with below 35% shooting.

....don't you bet against it! And the idea of the Clippers winning one game against the Spurs? Throw it out of your mind!

Giving up a 24-pt lead in a must-win game at home must not feel good for the Clippers.

So much for whiny superstars getting what they ask for. Wouldn't surprise me if the Pacers, Spurs and Thunder all make the final four.
