What's new

Stanford @ Utah

Stanford got out the Christmas wrapping paper early, put bows in their hair, and gave Utah a gift on those last two plays. How does throwing to the Endzone twice on 3 and 2 and 4th and 2 from the 6 with plenty of time left in the game make any sense? Just man up and play smashmouth football like you're supposed to. Bunch of string pullers.

Good win though.

BTW, for all you selective memory hacks that keep quoting my posts from this thread:

https://jazzfanz.com/showthread.php?18930-Oregon-State-Utah/page5

Stanford 34
Army 20

Ball State 41
Army 14

I'm not going to read too much into that score comparison, but seeing how Stanford has been good the last few years because they dominated at the line of scrimmage and pushed people around, and the fact that they did not do that against Army, there is a very good chance that they are quite overrated. Good news for Utah.

Guy's a genius. Par for the course.

I can only imagine how much anticipation there is for... uhh... the next game against Utah? Or maybe someone can help me know what it is a BYU fan looks forward to.
The Kraft fight hunger bowl. That's the high point of their season, don't you know.

They tried that and got nothing, even with 8 O-linemen in the game.

Are you guys going to the national championship game or something? College football is all about 1 game right now with no playoffs. And BYU and Utah both aren't going to be in it this year. So who cares? What do we look forward to? Just watching our team - kind of like all of us Jazz fans are going to have to be happy with this year. Single games. Signs of improvement(seen Taysom Hill lately? ). It doesn't feel any different than we started the year. We're 4-2 this year. Just beat Georgia Tech. Texas crushed #12 Oklahoma yesterday so that win is looking great. Plenty of reasons to stay tuned.

Next game: 0 loss Houston

Boise State will be 5-2 when they come to Provo.

@ Wisconsin (who will be ranked again starting today probably after they crushed a ranked team yesterday)

@ Notre Dame

etc.

And San Francisco is hardly the worst place to have your bowl game(which is really just a nice little vacation for the players when it comes down to it). Yeah, we'll be playing the same teams you guys play in that game - a Pac 12 San Diego State - probably Utah even actually - but somehow it's less exciting than you guys playing them week 7? I don't get you guys.

In the end it comes down to access to bigger games. Will we get a better bowl than BYU this year...Probably not. But pretty much you lose 1 game and you are locked into a crappy bowl with no chance at anything better. I don't see the thrill in routing for that. Why bother. Your schedule is really good this year and at least that gives you games to look forward to. But win or lose those games you are still going to the same bowl. You have just enough crappy teams on your schedule to insure a bowl. Utah does not have that. Hell for Utah just making a bowl with one of the toughest schedules in the nation is an accomplishment. For BYU? The bowl game is written into your schedule. Because of the level of competition in 6 of your games. Utah played 1 game that should have been a easy win this year. How many does BYU have? Hell BYU actually lost one of their scheduled wins.

If Utah was slotted for the KFH bowl, I'd decline it and go to the Dallas or NY Bowl and play a Big 10 or Big 12 team over playing those people again. The game happened. We won. If it happened again, we would win again. Hogan and Hundley are light years better than Hill, and Utah has shut both runners down. McGill shut down Hoff and Evans. Montgomery played well, but Stanford moved him around to get him the ball, and that is something BYU doesn't do with Hoff. Also, Utah FINALLY took Orphey out of the starting CB start midway through the game last night and put him in at nickleback and let Thomas take over that outside spot. Big improvement for Utah. Orphey isn't good enough to start. He will be much better as a NB.

Why would Utah want to play BYU again? What does that accomplish? NOTHING. If we don't qualify for the Sun Bowl or better, I'd rather play in either of those two bowls than play in the Las Vegas Bowl (Boise St), KFH (BYU), or New Mexico (SJSU/USU?). Why in the world would I want to play a MWC level team, when I could go to Dallas or NYC and play a quality BCS team?

Props to all college fans along the Wastach front yesterday btw.

I don't think either BYU or Utah sold out, the corners were iffy in both games, but Utah's game started at 4:00, BYU's started at 5:00, and Utah State at 6:00. So there were ~ 125,000 people with their butts in seats at college football games simultaneously. That's pretty good. Hopefully the NFL(and big wigs in Utah with resources that can make it happen) will take note of things like that once we add a little more population.

Good God in Heaven.

Please take your zoobiness elsewhere. This is the Utah vs. Stanford thread. Who gives a flying **** what you think about how BYU is going to do? How about you get off your stupid *** and start your own ****ing game threads?

So sick of you getting bent. If you want to talk about Utah or Stanford, then do it. But don't bring that zoob **** in here.

What a moran.

You're just mad cause the Utah circle jerking Jazzfanz party you were expecting to find is a semicircle. I didn't bring it up. I was just responding to some of your guys. I'm good with having zero BYU game threads on here. I don't care. I watch the games and think what I think. It's not particularly important for me to see what anonymous poster X thought of the game. We just expect to win. No talk.

Now the better route for you would to make a really good Utah/Standford post about the game and get 50 responses going from that. Talk about how Stanford is a bunch of string pullers for not running at Utah's grill on those few plays or something. Then maybe whatever you deem as being an interruption in your sacred thread wouldn't be so noticeable.

About a minute left and no timeouts, I understood throwing to the endzone. If they got stuffed on third down, who knows how much time is left to try a 4th down play. Their lack of defense and questionable play calling are what killed them. That roughing the passer penalty on The Ninety Nine Yard Drive kept the drive going when the Utes were probably going to have to kick a field goal. Also, the Utes had a really hard time tacking/covering Ty Montgomery. Here's a novel concept: Give him the ball as much as possible. The Trees didn't do it and the Utes (and their fans) are celebrating. I'm sure the circle jerk will be unbroken as we emerge from our drunken euphoria.

Us Ute fans need to ignore the noise coming from the usual trolls and focus on the fact that Utah just pulled off the biggest upset quite possibly in school history. We have 6 days to enjoy this as we look forward to our first PAC road game of the season.

I've gotta give huge props to Ute fans. For the first time ever, I went over to tailgate island and spent a couple hours hanging out. It was a great time. Easily the only place to get that kind of atmosphere in a collegiate setting in this state.

Getting back to the game, I think Dennis Ericksen has been a god send. The offensive game plan was PERFECT and Stanford was never able to dictate the flow of the game.

Thanks for doing your part to make BYU fans so easy to dislike.

Those passes had NOTHING to do with Wilson's thumb. Utah ran the Oregon style offense. Run the LB'ers to one sideline, then to the other. Then run the ball up the middle. Then run them to the other sideline then back again. I'm not saying Utah is Oregon, but it is the same philosophy as Oregon's. Make that defense run. Eventually, they will get tired and you can gouge them for big yardage.

Then, why change that up if Stanford is unwilling to adjust to it.

Also, Bubba Poole is A LOT faster than he gets credit for. Stanford didn't adjust because they haven't needed to yet this year. Poole is legit.
I was just referring to the last 2 or 3 possessions for Utah, I know that was the main game plan but they would still occasionally mix in a few other passes or runs. Once Wilson hurt his thumb it just seemed the U offense went into that safe zone play calling, but it could've been just protecting the lead and make Stanford stop it.

Oh and yes Bubba was the man in this game for sure.

Here is something we can all agree on, this .gif is awesome

Or the opposite of that, but whatevs.

Utah needed to get over the hump in the Pac 12. We needed a signature win and we've been painfully close so many times.

We just got over the hump in a huge way.

I honestly cared more just about getting a conference win than beating #5. It's a hell of a bonus, but I am an idiot and think that the conference is in play still/now. Utah just stays in games and they continue to get noticeably better every game (especially in the play-calling and in the secondary). If they can beat the toast of college football at their own game, I'll believe that the chance is still there and that maybe they even win an incredibly competitive conference.
