Yeah, I guess I overrated the creepiness of OL, my bad. I guess I just thought about the main character, the sister didnt really become a focal point until the 2nd half of the season.
Since there was no mention by the boys of the older sister's cuteness, I assume he's referring to Eleven.

Well Im equally creeped out if she was 10,12, or 14. Doesnt really change much.
But I think Jimles is right, he was talking about the sister, or at least I hope he was.

Wait, does El show up in the 1st episode? I don't exactly remember. OL said he watched the first episode only. I know the sister is in the 1st one.

Guys I was clearly talking about the sister, come on. She is CLEARY older than the boys. The other girl who escaped I considered to be the same age as the boys at this stage.

This goes beyond not being original IMO.. this is like when they take a less than successful Hollywood movie and make a TV series version of it. There are too many similarities in the setup.
I think somebody mentioned that it feels 'Steven Spielberg-esque'? Well Spielberg was one of the producers on ''Super 8". So I mean of course if they're ripping it off of that then it will be similar to that.
Anyway I've only watched the 1st episode so let's see what the rest of the series is like.

She does, but I can't remember if it's even clear she's a girl, due to clothes/hair. Either way, OL obviously references the hot older sister, as another 80s trope. Hell, there's implication that the toothless kid even has a crush on her, which is a staple of 80s movies.
The diner owner initially thought she was a boy but when he caught her stealing he grabbed her arms I think that was when he realised she was a girl and that's how we all knew she was a girl even with the hair and clothes.
The line between homage and rip-off is always going to be endlessly debated. In my opinion, Stranger Things falls on the homage side of the line. The plot, atmospherics, tone, music, etc aren't really totally indebted to any one thing, but they resemble and remind us of a whole bunch of different things.
The closest actual comparison is E.T. There are lots of shots that feel like they are taken out of E.T. When I was watching it, I also noticed things taken directly from Stand By Me, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Goonies, John Carpenter Movies, It, Flight of the Navigator, and a bevy of other films of the 1980s. That makes it closer to a Tarantino film. It wears the influences on its sleeve but creates a new story and a new feeling out of all of it.
My test for "is this a rip off or a loving rendition of its influences" is simple: does this capture the strict beat-by-beat of its influences or does it evoke what it feels like to watch its influences. Stranger things clearly falls on the latter side of that line.
Cocktail pairing: Dickel Whiskey and a carton of camel cigarettes.
Yeah much closer to ET. Like if the lead child actor wanted to make out with ET and people died.

What King are you/have you read recently.
I have read almost all of his books. (Currently reading bazaar of bad dreams)
One of his more recent books that I highly recommend (that is also under-rated and under appreciated) is Revival.
Fantastic read and the ending is truly mind blowing, chilling, horror.

I started reading The Dark Tower series. I'm up to book six now. I want to finish before the movie comes out. But, reading through the Dark Tower, it crosses into other books in his universe (as you probably know) so I went back and read The Eyes of the Dragon (The Man in Black/Flagg) and Salem's Lot (Callahan) and Insomnia (Patrick) and Desperation (the turtle)...btw, I LOVED Desperation. I want to read The Regulators.
I've read a bunch of his other stuff back in high school but that was a long time ago.
I did just finish the "End of Watch" trilogy. I cried in a couple of the books. Good stuff.
