I think what is happening with Pekovic is very instructive. I think the days of teams way overpaying for a free agent that their own team wants are (i won't say over) but changing. This off-season only one restricted free agent moved teams and there are serious questions as to whether Tyreke Evans was someone that Sacramento wanted around. I think they actually would have given him up if the offer was more around what it should have been for a player of Evans skills and deficiencies which is $8M per year.
NOLA way overpaid.
But the Bucks certainly didn't overpay to attempt to get Teague which showed restraint in attempting to get a good player. They didn't overpay, they just took a chance to get a player at his true value and hoped that the Hawks wanted to move on... but didn't want to overpay 2-3M per year.
The Timberwolves overpaid Batum last year by at least $2M per year, but if you look around the league who are the teams that are going to want Hayward so much that they are willing to overpay. I was really surprised that Portland didn't want to get revenge on Minnesota and go after Pek, but I am sure they looked at the market and decided that if their future was to rebuild around an eventual trade of Aldridge, it might not be the best to add a high priced Center who would make them a middle pack team when they want to really bottom out.
I think when teams know that the deal is going to be matched they will back off nowadays because this a now a league where if you overpay $3-$4M per year for a player who is a 3rd option on a good team you put yourself in trouble. I think Hayward will resign next summer for around $10M per but I hope that we get him this summer for $8.
