What's new

What will absolve the FO in your eyes?

FO has 2 big boners on their hands right now (phrasing!):

1) Not trading vets at deadline
2) Marvin Williams trade

one could also argue 3) Corbin, but that is controversial to some and we don't need to add it to drive home the point.

FO has equity built up with getting us these young players, but how they handle this situation from this point forward is soo crucial, and I admittedly am a little worried.

I have no problem with the Marvin Williams trade. Mo Williams was signed to replace Harris and I don't believe they could keep both of them. Therefore getting something for him was worth the risk. It seems to have been a failed risk but worth the risk at the time.

It is interesting that once sloan resigned, they asked Phil Johnson to coach and then he said he was resigning so they just went down the list and asked Corbin to coach. It doesn't seem like KOC thinks coachign is all that important, or i guess it is much more likely to say that KOC believes or believed that Corbin was truly head coaching material. Does anyone think Scott Layden would have been a better choice?
**** no. Best day for the franchise this season is when he left town.

I'm not a fan of Scott. He sure didn't do much in NY as a FO guy. Maybe he's a good assistant, taking care of the details.

As for what the Jazz can do, let's see them follow through on their plan of using their precious cap space to acquire good players or picks. That is what they've sold us on for two years...clearing the books to be in an advantageous financial position.

The Jazz haven't had a real PG since DWill left. The Jazz need to solve this and have a productive draft. Then give Corbin half a season to show he can coach in late-game situations. In addition, explore FA options that make the team better.

Any guesses on extensions?

I'd think Favors will get ~10m/yr, maybe more. Hayward between 7-10.

I think that's a pretty good estimation. Considering Hibbert got the max, Favors could command 12-13 which is a scary thought. I think he's worth about $10m though. I think Hayward will come in between $8-10m.

The basketball culture is the thing that needs to change.

An NBA team needs its players to be assckickers. Literally. Beat the opposition up all game long. Enes and Derrick are the perfect guys for the job. Coach should see this is a necessity to jump into the winning attitude and punish anyone who lacks hustle.

I'm hoping the FO has an off-season (or two) reminiscent of '03-'04/'04-'05. Specifically, Al and Paul don't come back. Bring back Mo at a reasonable price (4/25ish, team option(s)), don't bring back Foye (he'll just end up playing way more minutes than he should), re-sign Carroll (4/12ish). With abundant cap space, either find a way to use it to get something like Gasol or 1st rounders, no long term money. I want to see the team play hard every night and maybe even surprise people ala '03-'04. Worst case is they end up with a sub 30 win record ala '04-'05 and a top pick in a top heavy draft in '14. If they still have cap space next summer, maybe snag some up-and-comers. You may not have liked Boozer and Memo just before they left the Jazz, but the deals they signed to come to the Jazz were spot on (credit to KOC). This is how the FO can redeem themselves.

Ok, let's lay out the facts:

While the Jazz currently are in a playoff position, the odds of them holding this position is looking less and less likely as time goes on, for a variety of reasons (schedule, surging Lakers, downward spiral).

If the Jazz miss the playoffs, it cannot be argued that the Jazz did not make a horrendous mistake by not trading away Millsap, Jefferson or both. I guess we can consider arguments against this but I imagine they would be hard to truly sufficiently support.

Kanter, Burks and Favors are all surging in their development. Their production is only going up with more minutes, they show no sign of backing down, and bad games are becoming more the exception than the expected. By not trading Millsap or Jefferson in the pursuit of a playoff spot and coming up short, and a coach who seems reluctant to play these young guys in lieu of the vets we are unarguably wasting valuable development minutes on behalf what amounts to essentially failed mercenary type players.

So, *assuming* we miss the playoffs, what can the FO do in your eyes to make up for this?

One thing the FO has going for them is, well, they drafted (or traded for) the C4. So as much as we hate the position our team has been put in we would not have this frustration if we had not drafted (or traded) for legitimately talented and capable young players.

To me, the FO would need to a) admit that they screwed up, b) put Corbin on the hot seat (knowing the Jazz's conservatism I would be satisfied with a slightly warm but steadily warming seat), c) resign neither Paul nor Al, d) Commit fully to Kanter, Favors and Burks as the starters going in to next year.

I wish we could amnesty Marv.

It can absolutely 100% be argued that it would not have been wise to trade Sap, Jeff or both. What if the only deals available were for **** players with terrible contracts? Would that be better than letting them go for nothing? No, it wouldn't. I'll answer that for you.

Favors at 12 is not awesome at all. Hayward around 9 is ok, Kanter looks like he will be the best so he might also need a 12,13,14 ... which would not be awesome. Burks around 5-6 would be nice though.

I'm coming around to conclusion that Kanter will be more the beast than Favors. His play with more minutes appears to be more consistent, at least in terms of scoring and rebounding.

I really think that the future is in the combination of the two. They will be a reboudning nightmare or opposing teams. Favors will be the man on D with Kanter as his Robin. Run the majority of the post scoring thru Kanter and have Favors be a garbage man that gets his points off of putbacks. Run a couple plays a game for a lob to Favors.

Kanter is smarter, smoother, has more touch, has more skill, is a better shooter, a better passer, the only things Favors has on Kanter is size and athleticism and Kanter isn't lacking a whole lot in either of those areas.

Assuming Marvin Williams opts-in, I have faith that the front office will figure out how to trade his expiring contract for a valuable piece. This is the last summer before the massive luxury tax hits and teams over the cap might be willing to take Marvin's expiring for a good player on a longer deal.

If I was an outsider looking in, I would say the Jazz are setting up to be sold. 9 expiring contracts 5 rookie scale contracts and two draft picks.

If the Jazz are planning to actually stick around then the FO better have an amazing summer.

They need to hit two home runs and steal second base in the draft.
They need to use all this 'flexibility' to make some amazing trades that bring back players and picks.
They need to sign a FA that wants to be here, not another September 4, I signed here because I ran out of other options and the Jazz is better than China.
They Must find someone or someway to convey their 'PLAN' for next season to the fans so that the fans don't have to guess what the teams goals are.

On the FO I tend to agree. Coaching staff I think is another matter.

I don't think people realize how tough a spot Corbin is in. How many other teams have their 2 best (arguably) and highest paid players that are veterans and also have the next 2 best players (arguably) in their 2nd and 3rd years coming up right behind them? Its hard to find time for 4 guys who should all be playing. Jefferson is basically the only player that can score 1 on 1, Kanter is getting better, Favors is very very weak offensively but is a very good defender, and Millsap tries really hard but is just to small to be a great player. They all have strengths, they all have weaknesses. Its a lot deeper than Jefferson sucks at D and is boring he has to sit. Its not that simple.

I do think Marvin should have been sent to the bench along time ago, and Burks has proven us naysayers wrong. Mistakes have been made, but Ty is not in an easy spot either.
