Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Ahh.....Melo. -3.8 Box Plus/Minus in the regular season. Worst in the league for anyone playing over 30 MPG and playing more than 50 games.

Which he then follows up by posting -4.8 against us in the playoffs. Oh great Cthulhu, please, please, make him go to the Rockets. And let him start.

I don’t get it? Aren’t the Rockets basically analytic whores. Why would they want Melo?

No idea. But they **** on their perimeter D, bench and deep of 3 point shooters.

This is fantastic for Utah.

Denver moves a crap ton of salary for a pick... Atlanta take Lin and now they cut their cap space significantly... remaining 2018 FA are totally bummed out now.

I'm amazed by what Brooklyn did. Why the hell would you burn all your space on Arthur and Faried? They did Denver such a favor for pretty much nothing.

Atlanta could have done better too. Absorb Lin for a 2nd?

Remaining major story lines this postseason:

Kawhi
Sacramento cap space
Chicago cap space
Jabari
Marcus Smart
Where is Dennis Schroeder going?

Why do you assume they could have done better... they waited a while. Teams weren’t paying a premium to get off salary... even in this cap environment. They did as well as they could... I agree it isn’t great but that is the market for salary dumps right now.

Pretty much as I understand it, this actually is nice for both teams. Brooklyn didn't absolutely burn their capspace for next offseason (had enough for two max deal). So for all intents, this is eating Fareid's contract for a 1st and 2nd. Arthur is expiring this season. That's actually a good deal for them. The protections on the 1st are 1-12, so that may benefit them this year. Denver shaves a combined 48m (I think) in salary and tax. They are now 8m+ under the tax with 14 spots and are probably looking at getting another player via FA. Fantastic for Denver, but Brooklyn made out as well and they're simply playing the tank rule book by the letter. Good deal for both sides actually. But Brooklyn suddenly making smart moves... feels so unusual.

Edit: Actually, in conjunction with the Lin deal, this is great for Brookly as it solved some roster balance issues as well. Marks is quickly building something in Brooklyn. Still years out after the disasters of the previous years, but they're starting to be savvy. Ruh roh.

I did not see the 1st rounder from Denver to Brooklyn. So yeah, that was a great trade for Brooklyn.

The fact that they got a first for expiring deals is pretty amazing. That pretty much establishes that taking a 2 year deal gets you a 1st too. Maybe a less protected 1st.

2019 summer is going to be an absolute **** show. It might be 2016 all over again.

As I see it there's 4 playoff teams with a max slot next summer. Indy, Philly, Lakers and Jazz. Maybe Pelicans, Wolves (if they let Jimmy go, probably taking them out of the playoffs?), Spurs (Kawhi?). Clippers, Mavs and Knicks should be mentioned as decent landing spots. Everybody else who has a max spot or can easily maneuver to one is rebuilding.

I'm really glad the Jazz are on that list. I would be extremely disappointed if they took themselves off that list for a salary dump considering where the team is at right now.

How the mighty have fallen.

IT went from mvp contender to signing a 1 year 2million dollar deal to be a backup in Denver.

He's worth more than that. Did he at least get a no trade clause? Poor guy, two short years ago he was torching the jazz playing 1 on 5

calling like it is

Everybody has money so we should have money too. I just don't get the logic.

The NBA next summer will be like 10 guys going to a car lot where there are only 5 cars worth buying.

There is a lot of space but there are also a lot of players available. If we could get a premium asset for giving some of our flexibility up I'd be cool with that, but I think it is only meddling assets available... the Brooklyn Atlanta trade is a good example of that. I think the bigger argument would have been could we get something fairly decent with our MLE if we move move AB... but I don't see anything great being available.

We need to trust that DM and Rudy and our FO can recruit a difference maker. We may not get Klay or KD... but I can absolutely see Middleton, Love, Harris or someone else saying yes. Not a huge win maybe, but Boston getting Al Horford really helped ignite that team. Let the young guys grow and figure out what we still need.

Like getting Iggy wasn't what put GS over the top, but it helped push them that way... I don't see us getting the guy that sure fire puts us over the top, but an Iggy level player.. sure.

I'd love to get Schroeder on this team, but I don't think there's a scenario that makes any sense unless they want Burks+1st for him.
