Sure people recognize that for stars, but not for role players (in my opinion). If you ask the average Jazz fan how they like having Royce on the team I doubt that many of them would mention his great contract.

So what you said is based completely on speculation (i.e. your opinion of the "average jazz fan"), not on actual conversations?

I like Royce a lot, but he will be restricted and we should keep him at his current salary. We can lock him up long term and I think loyalty is a two way street... we gave him an opportunity, a contract, and helped him develop.

We could have max cap space this summer or next if we want to... Royce, DM, Joe, and Jae all on value deals (and Rudy... just good value at a high number) we have to capitalize on that flexibility. We could also do front loaded deals for Rubio (8% declines) and do a renegotiate and extend with Royce (similar to Robert Covington) but that takes up our space and needs to be a bargain on the back end of the deal to make it worth it.

If we don't attract a max-level star, then I'd be shocked if they don't spend the money on Ricky and Royce. In this scenario, as regards to Royce, you can probably get better terms by spending more, sooner.

If Ricky plays this year like he did the last half of last year, whats he worth? He's on 15 now, 17 to 20? Those last 3 months he went for 16ppg, 5 assists and 5 boards and he's only 27. Additionally, say you let him go, who would you replace him with? i'd be shocked if Ricky doesn't come back after this year but at what price? The real question is does Favors come back? I think he does.

In terms of Royce I'd definitely offer him the sort of number that Thabo is getting for next season maybe on a two year deal as an act of good faith. Easy to do of course when its not your money you're spending.
 
I think Ricky is back either way and I think it will be a mild bargain deal (thinking 14-20 per year). I don't think he has a big market because he is so unique... he's not a guy that would work in every system.

I think our general plan is to go through the season and see if the opportunistic deal pops up for Tobias Harris, Aaron Gordon, Mirotic, Otto Porter. If not we go into free agency... we can waive Favs, keep Ricky's caphold (or re-sign him if his new deal is less than 18M per year) and have max space, but it might require us trading either Jae or Dante. If no options come we can pick up Favs deal, re-sign Ricky and run it back. Again look for opportunistic trades during the season.

The following year we'd have max space with Ricky and Dante still on the books because the cap will jump a bit and Jae comes off the books. So we have 24 months of hunting through FA/trades that adds salary. I think it might be more probable we trade for an expiring guy in a discounted trade than just outright signing someone.

It's not just money... it's cap space. We could extend him beyond the small salary years, pay him fairly and get the same good faith. It's guaranteed money... there is a timing difference but I'm sure he'd be super happy.

We might need more creators off the bench long term... I'm not sure Joe will be a creator at that point and I'd want a guy in that role that has more ability to create his own shot.

I hope he has a jump in 3-pt percentages and better finishing at the rim. I hope he doesn't try to do too much, though. I like what Quin has said about wanting each guy to do just a little better/more -- one less turnover, one more shot, one more block, whatever. If Royce starts trying to do too much it kind of takes away from how everything fits together. Like we don't want him to try to be Donovan for sure.

Sounds like the jazz have set themselves up quite well. Flexibility, options, and good contracts everywhere on the roster.
DL has done a very good job assembling the players on this team and the contracts. Future is very bright.

Of course it helps when your star is on a rookie deal and things will definitely get tougher when that contract becomes a max in a few years but as of right now the jazz are sitting pretty

Why are you being a jerk? Of course my opinion of average Jazz fans comes through actual conversations I've had with people, both on Jazzfanz and in real life, along with people I've heard on radio And also from secondhand info from what people I've talked to have heard people saying. It's not from a scientific survey, if that's what you mean.

Big time... they do have a window to pull the trigger on a significant win now addition... will they do it?

Imo they will need to sacrifice good for great at some point... the position we always eye is PF but it could be PG or wing (if we moved DM to PG). If Ricky’s shooting is a fluke and Dante looks more like bench material that might be the position we upgrade. If the Favs Ricky Rudy grouping struggles might have to move to full on stretch four mode. Sacrificing those guys is risky because there is a significant chance we get worse.

Next 24 months will be entertaining and really interesting.

I said 3&D, I'm expecting a better three point shooting year out of him and elevating his defense to an elite level.. I definitely don't want him doing too much on offense.

If Mitchell plays as well or slightly better than last year, I feel we could win it all this year if the Dubs have one major injury.

Let’s say they don’t though. If every team is healthy, what percentage do you give us to win it all? 2%?

I like Royce's game a lot. He is long and fluid and has a nice shot and good instincts on D. He actually reminds me a little bit of a Scottie Pippen type player. I don't think he will ever sniff that level of play, but I think he could end up being a poor man's Pippen if he keeps developing. He is a great side-kick to Donovan, and I think he will be a worthy heir to the Jingledom when Joe retires.
 
Royce is nice, but minutes are going to be hard to come by for him to really make any kind of huge jump. I think Burks is going to be better this year (than he was last year) and Exum will hopefully be healthy, so it's probably going to be another 15-18 mpg season for Royce.
