2021 Free Agency

I would like to think that everyone in the organization has spent a lot of time reflecting on all of the reasons why they **** the bed in the post-season and that the humble pie served will fuel them to simply be better as a team; No more of this lazy perimeter D, no more meekness around the rim, no more squabbling about ego ****.

If they can get an alright defensive wing and commit to perimeter defense this team is meaningfully improved. And I am just not that worried about backup center since they are a dime a dozen (and somehow the Jazz have not been able to figure this out yet).

Yep. They have to realize how close they are to being able to win it all. Some of that they can change. Don and Mike have to be fully committed on defense. Bogey too of course. And some isn’t quite possible given the roster. We need 1-2 guys who are 6’6” to 6’8” with 7’0”+ wingspans who can d up, hit the 3, rebound and pass a bit, and who want to win a ****ing ring.

I have a feeling we may end up with Marcus smart

I don't even think we need all that much size- If we can get a 4 that can play perimeter defense and is a tenacious rebounder what else would we need. If we can get one that can at least be a threat from outside and can also play the 5 that would be ideal and icing on the cake. Am I describing a unicorn?

Unfortunately, you kind of are describing a rare type of player. Nance is interesting because he's not high-profile but theoretically checks off all those boxes at a modest level. I still think that would be a massive boon to the versatility of the roster. I should note that I don't think the Jazz can get Nance. If they could've traded that 1st they send to OKC (I don't think people are understanding how brutal that move was; thanks DL), maybe there was a shot.

Really? All four things I can see, but is perimeter defense and rebounding too much to ask for from the PF position?

Just read the report from Tony Jones about Conley returning. This is better than the alternative, but still not sure it's enough. I also was reading Otto Porter and Rudy Gay are leaning toward BKN and Lakers... it's really hard competing with those big market teams when they get all the best bargain bin players and we have no way to outbid them.

We might have one advantage with OPJ. He had a rough year and will probably be looking to improve his stock again.
PT is likely more limited for him in BKN, whereas he would definitely get burn here. Odds are we can pay him more too.

Seems like we’d need to include Clarkson in any package for Smart. Playing time wise it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to have Mitchell, Conley, Clarkson, Smart, Butler, and Hughes.

I like Smart a ton as a player, but we need wangz. I’m not sure what need Smart fills. I liked a Bogey/Smart package as a Conley pivot (for a Don/Smart backcourt) but it sure seems we aren’t going to need to pivot.

I've never thought Gay would be a great fit, but that OPJ would. I think to keep him away from the Nets, you'd have to overpay, if you even can.
You could also guarantee he'd play more here. I think there's a decent shot.

But if and Gay are the two main targets, ain't gonna lie, that's disappointing.
Shouldn't be disappointing, unless you're thinking trades. Or unless you think someone in the Harkless/Torrey Craig range is better. That's all we can afford to pay, and what we have may not even be enough to entice either one of these two.

If we’re just left with the dregs at the minimum, I’d rather take a flier on an a couple “up-and-comers” playing across the pond on two year contracts with team options on the second year.

I’m pretty cool with signing a guy like Jock Landale with a minimum to be our backup center.

It's too bad we didn't get to see much of Ilya... It would be interesting to see what struggles the team had with him in the lineup. I guess we wont know and I doubt he would want to come back.
He was unemployed before the Jazz picked him up, so I'm not sure he'd be against coming back. Just don't think the Jazz will bring him back.
