2021 Free Agency

Man, it just kills me the way the deck is stacked against non-glamour teams. Meanwhile, the Nets get a rejuvenated Blake Griffin for nothing and the Lakers can deplete all their assets for Westbrook because they know a bunch of guys will sign with them for the minimum.

I'd roll the dice on Winslow at less than the full tax-payer (I think there's something where if we use the MLE to sign Butler we can get an extra year on his deal as a 2nd rounder).

I wouldn't hate Millsap either.

I'm not going after your larger point.

I'm just saying you've been drawing the wrong lessons from the stats. Smart comes out well. If you remove the small-minute players (which I think you should, because the sample size is too small to be trustworthy), he's almost always among the top five of the Celtics, sometimes in the top three, despite being on very good teams with other high net-rating players (Horford, Irving, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, for example).
In the playoffs?

In the playoffs?
That's not where this conversation started (though you brought it in early, I acknowledge). I certainly was never trying to say anything about the playoffs. I tend not to trust playoff stats too much, but you may have a point that he (like many others) doesn't do as well in the playoffs as in the regular season.

Did we really want OPJ? We had enough injury issues. Don’t think we needed him too.
I think you are right. I think some people want free agent interest just to feel an inner need of being noticed as an organization. The jealousy around not being a major destination is real.

Meh. We’ve convinced three All-Stars to re-sign here in the last year. Not too worried that we’ve struck out in the minimum market.

If Rudy Gay doesn’t want to come here, just make a trade or find some 6’7-6’8 guys with large chips on their shoulders playing in Israel, Europe, or Australia
and sign them for minimum deals.

What’s the list of worthy candidates at this point? Millsap?
it’s not comprehensive, just how I’ve viewed it, minus *sigh* OPJ.

Un ****ing believable.

Gay
Markennan (depending on what happens with the rumored 3-way trades)
Ntilikina
Bjelica
Markieff Morris
Kaminsky
Hollis-Jefferson
Millsap
Winslow
Ennis III

If Gay walks too, I guess at this point I’d say get Nkitilina, Bjelica, and Morris even though he’s a head case. Besides Frankie I’m ambivalent.

Except. From what some bulls fans were saying, Chicago can only do a sign and trade for Markennan’s QO, it seems he’s definitely gone. It is just small enough to fit the Favors TPE. I don’t think we’d have enough assets for them to go for but I’d kill for it right now. Maybe the TPE and two second rounders would do it, I think they just want to get value for him.

id say try for for Lauri. He’s not perfect or exactly what we need, but he can do some of what we need. If he finally puts it all together, that’s a gigantic win. it’s a swing for the fences move.

How many all-stars have we convinced to play for us? JJ is only one I can think of.

So OPJ turned down the MLE elsewhere to take the vet minimum with the Dubs.

I bet we were the team he declined.

Is Niang S&T for Paschall possible and feasible?

I’m starting to get cold feet letting Niang walk, but I’m also concerned he gets an offer that will not be worth matching. I’d also like to avoid sending other assets and I can see Niang being a boon for them.

I can see why Otto Porter would play for the Warriors though. He gets to step into the KD role with Steph, Klay and Draymond. It's a good way to be featured. He'll also be on TV a lot.

I mean, I wanted the interest because it would be the only way to improve the team significantly without giving something up.

as it stands right now, the team is objectively worse than last year, since Favors and likely Niang are gone and haven’t been replaced.

To be fair to OPj, he would be playing Niang’s role here, where he would probably getting more minutes and more visibility in GSW?

IDK.
