Confidence Level in Walker

What does Walker's future hold?

  • Will be better than Gobert

  • Just as good as Gobert

  • He's still a future All Star or DPOY

  • Still a future 30+ MPG player

  • Zubac level starter

  • Bench player

I hope he is a plus version of Jakob Poeltl.... I think he's a guy that won't have a ton of growth in his game. He should be a 30 mpg starter on most nights but I'd love to supplement him with a change of pace big off the bench. Hopefully this summer he works on the things he needs to instead of going to the Team USA stuff and touring Utah for the Jr. Jazz program. I don't see the added muscle at all.

I never had hope for him as a shooter. The shot mechanics are noisy and he's a terrible ft shooter. Get stronger and hopefully add a small reliable baby hook.

I think with Walker he is good enough you aren't actively looking for upgrades... but he's not quite good enough that he is untouchable and for sure a piece you consider with your major picks and acquisitions going forward.

If you look at who Danny Ainge brought in to play at the 5 with the Celtics, it was normally a versatile big that offered some shooting and playmaking--e.g., Horford, Olynyk, Daniel Theis, etc. Robert Williams is an exception, but he was playing off the bench much of the time.

I wonder if the shooting stuff backfired. I don't think it helps him or the team to be spacing out....ever. He should be around the basket. Rudy's offensive game wasn't pretty, but it was effective because he stayed in his lane. I always rejected the idea of Rudy trying to add a post game or jump shot because it took away from what he was really effective at. When bigs start to get too cute and finesse, it may look more skilled, but it is often not as effective.

Kendrick Perkins

Maybe 2023 Shaq. If he was real drunk.
Just saying that's really easy to throw someone down if they have no idea you are going to
Like say shaq is looking at the hoop anticipating grabbing a rebound. I stick my leg out behind him and grab two handfuls of jersey and pull as hard as I can.
He is going down. Anyone would.

Perhaps, but no really, Kessler is no where near as good as he was last season. You posted a couple of stats showing that his scoring and rebounding isn't much different from last season. But his efficiency is down by a HUGE margin, from 70% to 58% TS. His rebounding rate has gone down significantly, his TOV% have gone up by almost 50%. His PER is down by a ton, his VORP is 0 now. His win share/48 is cut by more than half. He looks soft and afraid of contact. He's just not been very good.

Unfortunately it isn't that simple, and it isn't just about Kessler. If he's hanging around the rim all the time, he's clogging the paint for everybody else.

These days it's so hard to start a guy who can only score from within 5 feet.

It’s not as simple as you describe either. Non shooting bigs can still be a part of a potent offense. We literally saw that year after year. What cannot be a part of an effective offense is Kessler spacing out and also looking for short hooks and such instead of going all the way to the basket. Him doing that does not unclog the paint anymore than actually being a threat and occupying a defender at the hoop.

Ideally, Kessler needs someone better than THT....but THT does a lot of things that helps Kessler IMO. He is decent at passing through traffic once at the basket, and Kessler can also clean up those wild layup misses at the hoop.

22/23:

Kessler w/ THT - 76% TS
Kessler w/o THT - 67% TS

23/24:

Kessler w/ THT - 65% TS
Kessler w/o THT - 51% TS

His blocks are up
His injuries are up too.
His teammates are down
His consistency in his role is down

There is some context to this imo

There are pluses and minuses. Obviously, Kessler is an interior presence. He's a paint deterrent. He anchors a defense and rebounds. It would be nice if our center could do that and also do more offensively.

I have heard that and defended that many many many times over the last decade or so.
Sucks to have to do it again but here we are.

Rudy made you foul him. Walker does not

Garbage, Rudy couldn't buy a call for his first few years in the league. He's only get to the line when he was intentionally fouled, which happened a lot then because he was a poor free throw shooter. He improved immensely and started getting a better whistle as he grew into his role.

Man, fact check yourself before you speak out your ***. Gobert has always had an elite FTR. He did not get intentionally fouled that often, and Walker is a worse FT shooter than Gobert....

Gobert made people foul him because he tried to dunk through people.

Gobert 1.4 FTA a game as a rookie. 3.3 FTA Second year. Kessler had more as a rookie (2.1), Gobert as a second year has more thus far (Kessler at 1.5,) But 3.3 FTA a game isn't "elite". Rudy will eventually get to 6.7 which is really good, but he had a pretty spaced paint at that point.

Need to do per 36 though imo
