Potential Trade Targets

My reiterations:

The streak is good and it is fun. But there will be other streaks during this season that may go the other way where we're going to feel like, "damn, trade _____ as we pivot to the future" and everyone is going to agree how there's no value out there for _____ and we're just SOL. Remember how many ups and downs we had last year in our valuations of Vanderbilt? How irrelevant are any of those discussions now? We can talk about riding things out with JC or Olynyk, and yeah maybe get more value by letting them expire than trading them for seconds (DA isn't do that anyway so we can forget about it), but if we can get anything of real value then we need to. Us talking about the Olynyk feel-goods will likely be drastically irrelevant in one year, and completely irrelevant the next.

Right now, people would be absolutely fine throwing THT out for nothing. There's going to be injury or something and over a 7-14 day span it will transition to "OMG maybe THT has something and we should consider him part of our young development" and people are going to talk about re-signing him.

Understand the ebb and flow of perceived value and recognize that whatever current moment we're in is not the ultimate vantage point of eternity.
Solid post. I liked the last paragraph the most. The whole jazz team was garbage 1 month ago and look at us now. Ebbing.

The guy making decisions doesn't care.
There is no evidence that DA doesnt care about baggage, but there is plenty of evidence that he does value high charracter, good vibes and hard work ethic guys. I mean look at the guys we have... its not random that we are super rich on those things.

The history of DA decission making also supports that:
  • We blew up the bad vibes team and sent everyone out but Conley and Clarkson, who are both positive high charracter good vibes guys.
  • We traded for KO and Collins, both known of being glue guys in their previous teams.
  • We rerouted Pat Bev to the Lakers without him playing a game for us.
  • We cut Bolmaro who was on a rookie contract because he complained about opportunity.
  • We let Westbrook make the choice himself if he plays here or if we buy him out.
  • We havent chased Wood or anyone in the FA who has had some questions regarding those things.
  • This last one is speculating, but this could be the reason we had George #10 on our big board.
Personally, I think its more of a Hardy thing, and DA is just giving Hardy the type of players that he wants.

I think the point is valid, but there's a few issues here as it relates to injuries. That's going to happen. But part of the current tear the team is on is that they are healthy and have had a chance to play together. Are they legitimately this good? Probably not. But they've also won 15 out of the last 19 and done it against some good teams. The longer this goes, the more this isn't a fluke. At worst, this is what the team is capable of doing. But they aren't catching anyone off guard anymore and opposing teams can plan around what Hardy is doing. Side note: It's nice having a coach that is willing to experiment and let things ride out as necessary.

As far as with THT, I suspect Ainge sees him as something that can help get some 2nds back in the kitty. THT's a depth piece, but we also have about 6 guards that are either ahead him in the rotation or that I wouldn't mind giving minutes to to see what happens. I wouldn't overstate his value at this as anything beyond an expiring deal.

I think it's also part of a longer Jazz tradition of going for high character 'Jazz DNA' type players.

Yeah, it's a hard call. Sexton is improving quickly, fun to watch right now, and playing amazing. Plus the team chemistry is great. But Dejounte would fit nicely as a starter.
I think if I’m trading for Murray it’s in part because I think he’s a good fit with Collin. So I’d say no. It’s also a win now deal and I think Collin helps us win basketball games. We need a few chances to “pop” and sexton imo is one of those chances if he’s production as a starter is sustainable.

All of your things about good vibes and chemistry, in what way do they apply to Hayward? Hayward is a douche from the perspective of Jazz fans. Ainge is the guy who orchestrated the whole thing. None of the “baggage” exists within the franchise, as it’s complete turnover. All of it is external.

I'm not saying anything about Hayward really. I dont know him well enough to say if he is a high charracter guy or a douche in the locker room.

Just that DA does care a lot about that. Whether thats to serve Hardy or if its his own vision/preference, dont know that either.

Maybe... maybe we just roll with Dunn and Sexton and see what happens. I like Kris. This is not what I would have expected a well known national nba geek to say. I think we can retain Kris and Tech at very team friendly numbers.

That statement may be a bit too much, but I thoroughly enjoy watching Dunn play defense and hope we keep him. I'm also perfectly happy with how he runs the offense. Sure there is plenty of room for improvement on that end, but that's part of the reason we got him cheap.

I think JC and KO are the parts we can "replace" and get future value for. It is hard to replace JC's scoring at volume but you can replace his contribution to winning with different pieces. KO i think is tougher to replace since he is such a unique guy but I think he's someone we can get by without if Tay Henny can give us something. At some point you have to swap good for great (even if it is okay now with hopes of being great later). KO isn't a guy that will be contributing in 2-3 years so if a good offer comes up then go ahead.

I think he's figured out the perfect balance of just starting the possessions off and when to look for his float/middy game that looks to be back on track. We need the guy who is looking to move the ball so the offense is low volume but I think underrated. He passes up at least one three per game I wish he'd shoot but at least he isn't just stopping the ball and side stepping... he's usually driving. His 3 point shot has actually been solid so he should be a bit more confident with it imo.

That seems right. I think he could easily put up a few more points, but there's probably no need for it at the moment. His go to move where he bullies his defender down low for a short floater isn't pretty, but very effective lately. And like you said he's hitting his 3s at a respectable rate (37%) and when I see him shoot I have more confidence of it going in than with some of our other players. I don't know if I read it here or heard it somewhere else, but it was also suggested that perhaps he's focusing on what he does well to establish himself in the league again, instead of trying to showcase more and thereby also exposing his shortcomings again. Whatever it is, it's working for the team now.

And the allure of having 20-35M of cap space if we move one of KO or JC on top of being able to keep Tech, Dunn, and renegotiate Lauri is a primary factor in any trade with those two. So it isn't just the return I am concerned with.

Wow bro… you really linked his tweet instead of mine when mine was done like 12 hours earlier lol.
I noticed you put up a tweet about Scoot that absolutely blew up like a week ago.

Hope you didnt get flamed too much. I think it was a fair thing to say, to have Lauri rather than him.
