(Deseret News) Utah Jazz might surprise and pick Butler star Gordon Hayward

Just read Chad Ford's latest mock draft. He has the Jazz getting Monroe still, but from what I'm reading, it doesn't sound like Monroe will be around at #9 when the actual draft happens. Ford mentions that Hayward is a real possibility for Utah. He also dropped Whiteside down to #24 because his interviews were awful last week. Very immature and naive; stock killing.

As a looonng big man I doubt that trend will continue but if it does I definitely wouldn't mind the Jazz after drafting and keeping whoever at #9 maneuvering a trade with future picks to get a late first round to take a chance on him since they have such a glaring need.

Unless Hayward is the next Bird, he's the next Korver, and I'd rather have Korver at this moment in time. Would depend upon Korver's price, though.

....probably why it makes some sense.....he'd come cheaper than Korver, probably already plays better defense....and might be able to even shoot a higher percentage from 3 point range? Maybe not, but if all the decent bigs are gone by the Jazz pick, they make take a long hard look at this kid, who certainly fits the Jazz mold!

Who is he going to be able to guard at the next level?
"The defensive end is where Hayward’s game has the most concerns, as he’s not really an ideal matchup for any position in the NBA, lacking the size to defend most 4’s and not having ideal lateral quickness on the perimeter."

"his lack of elite lateral footspeed and strength will make it difficult to match up with small forwards in the NBA ... Several scouts and knowledgable observers have mentioned that Gordon is "too nice" which points to our comment about his lack of aggression"

"lacks the prototypical athleticism that would allow him to seamlessly transition his game to the next level."

"not terribly explosive and will have to answer some questions about his lateral quickness and defensive ability."

This guy is going to bring what exactly to the team?
"In the final few months of the season, his shooting continued to deteriorate to the point that he finished his sophomore campaign shooting under 30% from beyond the arc."

"If Hayward struggles to deny dribble penetration consistently, he could be limited to a much smaller role than he would if he emerged as even an adequate team defender. "

Worth a top ten lottery pick? oh my...
"Looking at Hayward’s body of work, it is difficult to knock what he could bring to the table in a complementary role.
Smart and savvy, he is a coach’s dream. But his lack of athleticism raises questions about his long-term potential."

So is it that every time a white guy comes up in draft or free-agent talk that Utah is his likely destination?

...well, the Suns and the Spurs and the Mavs have a few too, don't they? Teams that run structured systems that depend on picks, screens and off the ball movement tend to go with the slower white guys!

How does being slow and white help a player run a structured system that depends on picks, screens and off the ball movement?

Kris Humphries and Ronnie Brewer. It seems there was someone else, but I can't remember who it was. My memory's not that Gr8.
Auhh you did his homework for him, c'mon no helping I was trying to get him to think past his KOC bias, also I should have specified top 10 since I knew Humphries would bring down his batting average but Brew and that other guy is still a good record for the limited number of attempts.

I believe Brewer was the 14th pick, not top 10. I'm no Brewer fanatic, but getting a player of his caliber at 14 is a pretty good find if you ask me. You can definitely do a lot worse at 14. People rip on KOC for his first round darft busts, but we are also picking late in the first round pretty much every year.
