BYU @ Florida State Game Thread

This is the worst BYU defense I've seen since Bronco took over and it's not even close. TCU and Utah are definitely losses, and I wouldn't be suprised to see Nevada come to town next week and beat them as well. Nevada hung 52 points on Cal. I see nothing from BYU's defense that says they'll be able to stop an explosive Wolfpack offense.

This is a 7-and-5 football team. No reason not to put Heaps in full time and at least try to get on with the future.

Good hell. That's the QB you guys have been begging to play more? Wounded duck throws that completely missed the receivers. 4-5 fumbles. No pocket presence. I can see he has a strong arm but does he do anything else a QB needs to do to be successful?

This is the 1st time I have seen him play and I was not impressed in the least. I also watched Nevada play yesterday and I think they are going to beat BYU handily.

Now the question is whether the line really sucks, the WRs can't get open, or that he is holding onto the ball for too long. Probably all of the above.
I was speaking just of his throwing motion anyway but obviously haters got hate. It's clear the kid has an arm and a bright future. Now how quickly that future gets here is another story.

As for what you were talking about the line is built more for run-blocking and initially were working with a more mobile QB. So now a shift needs to happen there. Heaps definitely struggled to stay in the pocket and caused some problems with happy feet. I don't think he was hanging onto the ball too long so much as he was taking to long to get through his reads.

As for the WRs getting open that is never going to happen much at BYU. They depend on scheme for guys to get open for the most part and they have some new WRs to break in and they aren't super impressive anyway (even given BYU WR low athletic standards).

The defense certainly isn't helping.

Trial by fire for sure and it's just great that he's out there.

Lol. No way. Wynn and Cain are both better right now. And I think Wynn is the better prospect.
Of course you feel that way and I'd expect nothing less. But Whit feels differently. In four years (probably less) the stats will show otherwise. Until then you can keep crowing.

And of course you have PROOF that Whit feels differently? Since there is no evidence that they even attempted to recruit him. The passing stats may show that Heaps has more passing yards. But BYU is a passing team you would expect a QB for a pass 1st system to have better stats. I'll watch winning records against good teams myself.

Ya sure. Whit had a presser and said he wishes he had Heaps cuz that's what smart coaches do. I like that you've already got some excuses for Heaps over Wynn preloaded. I gave you two years and you took two minutes.

BYU Football is a complete waste of time right now.

Until that QB somewhat develops their offense is going to suck. It's sad too, because they could have been focusing on him throughout spring, summer, and fall instead of splitting time.

Until they upgrade their recruiting big time, they're not going to be able to hang even with average teams. May I say that there's even been a *gasp* drop in recruiting from the last few years? Maybe Bronco became too comfortable? Anyone else wonder about this? Right now they have receivers and running backs who couldn't even start for a lot of Div I teams. Jacobson couldn't even sniff Collie's jock. Defensively, there's not one player other that could start for Utah or TCU. Their "collective" is talentless.

Until they upgrade their schemes and become more aggressive both offensively and defensively, they're going to be extremely limited in what they can do. Robert Anae needs to wake up. Watch some Boise St, Oregon, and Northwestern and get some ideas. Use creativity and trickery to make up for talent. Hill needs to put in some blitzes. Staying with 4 down linemen and everyone else trying to keep everything in front of them is a recipe for disaster. Defense is never won by playing "not to lose."

Staying with the status quo isn't going to get it done. I hope for another devastating loss at the hands of Nevada. that would be awesome.

It is going to be a long year for BYU. I wasn't that impressed with their victory over Washingtion. Now with two blowout loses and Nevada this week this season BYU can lose more than 5 games this year. They have lost two games and Nevada looked impressive today. I know it is ony one game but they are 3-0. They have to still play TCU and Utah. BYU is a very young team and they will always struggle against really athletic teams.

I think they just have some bad timing right now with several groups being down due to inexperience. In the past you've had enough good groups to overcome deficiencies elsewhere. But too much inexperience right now at too many positions. When was the last time a passing school brought in a true freshman to play with inexperienced WRs, TEs, and RBs combined with a young defense and had immediate success?

Time will tell but history has shown BYU to be plenty resilient with very few lean years. A few losses here and there to quality opponents isn't the end of the world.

How bout AF taking to OK?

nope I just care about wins over good teams more than passing yards. No excuses just what is important. Just like Alex Smith was a better QB than Beck or Hall because he had a better winning % against good teams.

In Jordan Wynns's first start as a true freshman last year the Utes had 500 yards of offense. Including 297 passing from Wynn and two touchdowns. Granted it was against New Mexico. So it will be interesting to see what Heaps does as a comparison. But I doubt he matches that.

Just a question because I don't really follow BYU recruiting: Who's the next great TE at BYU? Is he even on the roster right now?

The way BYU runs it's offense, the TE is an ESSENTIAL cog in the passing game. Just look at the TE's that Beck and Hall had to throw to. It doesn't help that BYU's current WR unit could quite possibly be the worst in the MWC and beyond, but having a decent TE or two right now would sure open things up for them. Heaps isn't going to progress much this season if he is constantly throwing check-down passes to his RB's.
