Milwaukee Buck's shrink calls Exum soft?

Maybe the ones that agree can tell us why Trey Burke is so shy on defense because it doesnt look like Exum is shy there. The points allowed back that up.

Wow. Funny how so many of you are down on Exum. So many reason to be excited about him and easy to see why he may be struggling, but yet at least 25% of the board is already on the Exum sucks wagon. Like any of the other picks in this draft are blowing up. Parker, the leader for ROY was averaging a whole 12 points and 5.5 rebounds and looked ****ty doing it. Yall need to keep calm.

I expected him to struggle, but I did think he'd be more aggressive while struggling. The only thing that has caused some panic for me is when I see opportunities for him to be aggressive and watching him pass them up... I'd like to see a few more drives in the second half of the season.

With that said his 3 point shot and defense are way ahead of what I expected.

This shrink thing is kinda stupid...

It's kind of hard to compare their on court skill set being they play two different positions; but Exum's ability to see the court and his basketball IQ far surpass any skill Favors had his rookie year. Favors at 19 could dunk and rebound and on occasion block a shot.

They're both very teachable and have high ceilings. To me that's about all that matters right now.

The ability to protect the rim is as valuable as seeing the court. Kendall Marshall sees the court as well as anyone in the NBA. He gets about 15 minutes a game nowadays and will probably be on a plane to Europe soon.

When Parker was at Duke I thought he was nowhere near NBA shape - not a big deal being that's probably the case but I think the bigger issue is he doesn't have a great body. I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks down before he's 30.

Kendall Marshall will never play defense as well as Exum does at age 19 with almost no competitive experience. If you just had a guy that was a promising lockdown defender at pg with a developing outside shot (basically Smart who was drafted at 6), you have a top 10 pick in any draft. That is before you add in the "seeing the court" factor. Now add in the lightning quick first step and you will realize how freaking important that coin flip was to the future of the Utah Jazz. We just need Exum doing his personal training with whoever is working with Hayward. The body will catch up. . .

Every time Exum gets fouls hard he looks like he is about to die.

Which is odd because he is not super light, he is the same size as MCW in both height and weight.
In fact a "less risk taking" MCW is a fair comp. for Exum right now.

Yeah, MCW needs to take less risks, because they aren't really paying off for his team. . .

Philly should give him a fat bonus check to be honest. He is playing along with the tank at the price of hurting his next contract. I think he is a better, smarter player than what we have seen.

Philly should also bonus out to their season ticket holders... I barely made it through one game of that garbage. What they are doing is not good for basketball and I doubt it will be good for their franchise.

And he avoids body contact at all cost. And whenever he gets it, he goes flying into first row. His weight is probably not the problem, like Jazz4ever said. At one point he was getting bullied by Sebastian Telfair with physicality... 170lbs 6'0'' Sebastian Telfair. Exum has 25 pounds in weight and 6 inches of height on him.

His strength is his bigger problem than weight. He looks soft at everything he does. His dribbling is soft and loose(just look at how he dribbles it even when there's nobody around him when he's taking it up the court... it's like he's using the tips of his fingers to dribble), his passes are soft, his cuts off screens are soft and indecisive, his drives are soft and timid... In the summer I kept saying that I am not worried about his shot or handle, cause he can work on that and improve, but I am really worried for the lack of aggression and physicality. Can you think of an example of a player that improved dramatically their aggressiveness and physicality past their first season? I don't buy the Hayward comparison. Hayward had 30+ point game in his rookie season and was dunking in traffic taking contact. Trey ****ing Burke draws more fouls per 36 than Dante.

I think next summer will be key for Dante. It will be crucial about how much work he puts in to improve his body. I want to see him go body to body in the paint. I want to see physical plays! I want to see him make hard and sharp cuts, I want to see him making decisive plays. The one I loved the most this season was the drive against Jrue Holiday. It was decisive, sharp and gave him absolutely no chance to contest. This is what my hope is for him in the future - that he will do those every game and even bang his body and draw fouls in the paint if he faces resistance.

The best things about him so far are the things he was actually not supposed to be good with - 3p shooting and defense. Strength is still a problem in defense, but you can absolutely see the elite defensive potential in pretty much every game and if he keeps this level of shooting or even improves it and adds what we thought were his strengths - slashing and speed to the rim, we are looking at an extremely hard player to guard. I just really really hope that his passiveness is more a product of lack of temporary confidence and strength than lack of inner assertiveness and determination.

These are pretty much my exact thoughts on Exum. He needs to live at P3 and hire a nutritionist over the summer. I am hoping it is just a strength issue and not a mindset issue...

I recall him being more aggressive during summer league. I think the Jazz coaching staff is being very cautious about what they ask him to do, particularly during the early part of the season. It's in no one's best interest to see their hopeful star player get body-checked into the 3rd row by players like Andre Drummond and Marc Gasol. This is still a re-build year.

This is what leads me to believe it is really not his mindset, but partly the coaching staff putting some bubble wrap around him which is fine. Just once or twice a game I'd like to see him go to the basket hard.

I'd say his body language looks immature. He looks like a kid out there, swinging his arms and head around like a carefree teenager. He'll be different when he matures. It's also a huge mental adjustment from being a kid playing sports to a pro day in and day out.
