BYU Player Suspended for Wearing Earrings

So somebody a breaks a contract that they willingly signed, and we have some sort of outrage or disgust about it?

Make some of the responsibility lies to the kid, yeah?

Is it a stupid rule? Yeah, I think so. However, this kid still signed the contract, thereby agreeing that he would follow it…I have no problem with him getting suspended. He did not have to go to BYU, he chose to go there, and he chose to break their rules. Pretty simple.

I think outrage is about contract itself.

According to Wikipedia more than 98% of BYU students are mormons.

My question wasn't about the entire student body. I would expect the demographics of the football team to be different from the student body. Doesn't answer the question.

I think outrage is about contract itself.

Why? He was not forced to go to BYU, he was not forced to sign the contract. He could have gone to several other colleges where they don't have rules like this. It doesn't matter if the contract is stupid, because it was not forced upon him. If anything, it just makes him look more stupid for agreeing to the contract.

I think outrage is about contract itself.

Then don't go.

There's nothing at BYU that can't be achieved at other schools. I'd never go to BYU, but they're free to make their own rules because they're a private entity. Outrage at the concept of having a moral code seems silly. Blame lies solely on the people who would sign such a thing.

But how do we know how recruiting process to BYU goes when it comes to athletes? And lets be honest some of these kids are not the brightest. They may pick it over other universities without even understanding what they are getting themselves into.

Anybody who is going to college should be capable of reading a contract. Not that difficult.

Why would somebody sign silly contract to attend university? People do not sign human rights away so easy.

The enrollment numbers at BYU disagree.

Numerous people do that without even signing any contracts.

I agree.
sure sucks though. As a byu fan I hate watching good players get suspended for things that they would not be suspended for elsewhere. (keep in mind that im a fan of byu basketball and football and not necessarily a fan of the school itself or the religion)

I dislike the honor code

Harvey unga had sex with his fiance that he had been with for like 5 years and was going into his senior season (holding all the career byu rushing records and possibly the best running back of all time at byu........ though i think its luke staley) and was suspended for the year...... he is married to that girl now so he basically lost his sr year of football, and the team lost a star, because he had sex with his wife.

Then there is the brandon davies story and he gets suspended for the conference tournament and ncaa tourney because he slept with a girlfriend.

As a fan, its frustrating
I find it bizarre that you are a fan. The vast majority of their fanbase would not find you to be acceptable. Can you even enjoy yourself at their games? I find the atmosphere at BYU to be extremely uncomfortable.

If it isn't they should suspended him for being a liar, which to most people does seem like a violation of one's honor.
Agreed. Dishonesty, to me, is a way bigger deal than wearing earrings. If he did this in a dishonest attempt to embarrass the school they should tell him to take a hike.

I don't say this to be mean, rather simply as a matter of fact - if you find it bizarre he is a fan because of the post above, you are incredibly naive as it relates to BYU fans. I don't know that I can say he's in the majority of BYU fans, but either way, it's very close. Definitely not a vast majority that would find him to be unacceptable. I'm a BYU fan and happen to be on the opposite end of the spectrum as fishonjazz from a religious standpoint, but I agree with everything he said and think he's a great fan. In fact, I'm probably part of that fictional "vast majority" you are referring to.

You should have seen the contract i had to sign when i bought my house. Pretty damn difficult. It was as long as a novel

The one thing that Bronco will not tolerate is being lied to. Also, this whole earring thing is laughable - that is most definitely not the reason Devon Blackmon is being suspended.

Going to the games, its a little bit different than other sporting events i have attended for sure..... and sometimes its kind of refreshing to not hear as much vulgarity and have drunk people all around me (even it that describes myself at some of the other sporting events)

as for being a fan...... the product on the field/court is no different than any other middle of the pack school in the ncaa

I bet that every player on every team in every sport at every college has lied before.

This sure doesn't match my experiences with BYU.

I understand that. It's why I said you're naive at it relates to BYU fans. But in your defense, since you're not a BYU fan, that is completely understandable. I would be very naive as it relates to ute fans or fans of pretty much any school other than BYU.

I was once at a BYU game in Provo cheering for Utah. The fans behind us seemed to be getting very upset about our enthusiasm. Eventually one of them tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me. Could you please sit down. You're blocking my vision."

I said, "My apologizes. I didn't realize that you were having one."
