BYU Player Suspended for Wearing Earrings

So no Mormons go to hell? Even drinking, smoking, cheating ones?

Did you see that Southpark episode? I thought it was quite funny. Mormons have a unique view of the hereafter, it's complicated.

I bet that every player on every team in every sport at every college has lied before.
I'm sure this is true, but don't you think that lying in an attempt to embarrass your university and head coach is a little bit different than telling a run-of-the-mill white lie? What I was trying to say is that if the earring story is a lie he will probably be facing more disciplinary action because a lie of this sort seems way worse than wearing an earring.

Also, Joe, even if a majority of BYU fans find fish unacceptable, they can go to hell. He's a great fan.
The irony in all this is, I went to a youth conference at BYU years ago. The atmosphere was so repressive that me and all my friends decided to go to the mall and get our ears pierced. To say that it didn't go over well with the leaders of the conference is an understatement.

Ya i get your point and you are correct.

St. Peter was at the gates of heaven and a batch of new recruits arrived. He had a little extra time so he decided to take them on their orientation tour. He told them they would each need to decide which of the rooms they would move in to. At the first door they looked into a window and everyone was partying and celebrating. There were all sorts of decorations, food being cooked, liquids being drunk, herbs being smoked, etc. One of the recruits asked St. Peter, "What's going on in there?" St. Peter answered, "Those are the Buddhists. They sure know how to have a good time, don't they?"

A similar scene played out in each room they looked into. Greek Orthodox, Pagan, Irish Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, etc. Then St. Peter said, "I need to ask that you all be as quiet as possible as we pass this next room." The recruits looked at each other, confused, but did as they were told. Inside the room everyone was dressed in white, and the behavior was extremely reverent and boring. It was vastly different from everything they had seen so far. When they'd gone far enough down the hall to speak again one of the newbies said to St. Peter, "This is a great place you run here, and I really am having a hard time deciding which of the rooms I want to check into, they all look like so much fun... except for that last one. I've got to ask you, who were those people in there?" "Oh," said St. Peter, "Those were the Mormons. We have to be really quiet at their end of the hall because they don't believe anybody else is up here."

So expecting students at a church university to live a clean and virtuous life, which includes no sex before marriage, is the same as agreeing with the execution of homosexuals? On what planet? Certainly not mine.

Some Arab countries would argue...

If I'm reading your comment correctly, you just put yourself into the same category as those Arab countries. I don't think that's what you intended, so you might want to rephrase your response to me.

Question: How well informed are some of these kids before they sign the scholarship? I suppose I speak mostly about the non-Mormon kids out of state. How many of those are there, actually, on the roster?

I read an article on Cody Hoffman recently (yesterday?) that said the football team is about 90% LDS, if I recall correctly.

I'm sure they know what is expected of them by signing the honor code. I may not agree with everything Bronco does, but from what I can tell that is one thing he does very well.

This is a very good question actually. I would assume that they are given the Honor code to read and sign...anyone able to shed light on the process?

I've dealt with nonLDS undergrads and graduate students before. In both cases they had to read and agree to the Honor Code in order to accept BYU's offer of admission and enroll at the university. Now, how closely they read and whether they understood things, I can't say. But as I mentioned in my last post, as far as the football players go that's one area that I feel Bronco is really good at.

Do you think the non-LDS members have a full understanding of that honor code? I don't know the specifics of that contract. Is it comprehensive with detailed examples, or broader in nature?

So long as the recruits know precisely what they're signing up for, it's on them to uphold it.

It is certainly different level and maybe I used a wrong/to extreme example. But my point is that any religious related restrictions, rules, codes, punishments, whatever you name it, should not have place in 21st century. It is not medieval times people!
On a side note I reffed womens soccer league game recently here in July....+32 C , not a slightest wind, one of the teams was Lebanon based team with most of the girls wearing black headscarves. Needless to say they are almost passing out after 20 min or so so I call water break. One team is very thankful for that and runs to the sidelines to have some water, powerade, whatever. Muslim girls just stand there on the sideline gasping and not drinking anything. I ask whats up guys, why are you not drinking. The answer was Ramadan, we can't. I probably never felt more sorry for anybody following religious restrictions. Why on Earth anybody would take it to extremes like that and put themselves at risk of dehydration and serious health issues. Where is common sense?
And I forgot to mention they were all wearing long black pants and long sleeved shirts under their team uniforms as well.

17 of the current 105 are. So ~16%. And they obviously are aware as many of them have even stated that was a big reason they chose BYU. And most of these non-lds guys they recruit are Christians anyway, so they are already familiar with people that live that way even if they don't necessarily live that way beforehand themselves. They aren't going to go after anybody that's too far out there as far as wild living goes. And I'm sure BYU is more lenient with guys that aren't used to living BYU's honor code. Davies, Unga, Stout, Hadley, etc. probably got treated more harshly because they are Mormons.

In 21st century both are absolutely stupid and should never exist. Especially in USA.

Taking this as proof that deep down you feel the USA is the best country in the world.

Try to hide it and it just comes out, I know it's embarrassing for you, but it's ok.

Curse you Freud.
