OK, there were a few interesting options I looked at, but the value of any of them depended upon you suddenly becoming pretty stupid or something. I have to stay as close as I can to a defense.

Honestly, I cannot predict your next move at this point.

Ra6

In case I'm not reading the grid right, that is a move back one square for my Rook, to assist in defense of my pawn and other potential actions on that rank.

had you neglected to advance your King first at least so far as you have, I would have had an advantage in the exchange. Your present move has long been anticipated in a general sense but I don't see my response as certain by any means.

edit. . . . .

hmmmmm. . . . . I guess you are right on this one. . . . .

cxd

meaning I take your pawn with my pawn, as I think you expected.

I had hoped you would try to advance your king. There was one spot that might have done better for you, the f4 spot. any other would have essentially given me a free move to mount an attack on the a pawn. I had thought that this pawn advance is premature, but it does move the game along. I don't know how you will move on this turn, the obvious two choices do remove my pawn immediately, but leave me a chance to do something I want to do. . . .

looking at this further, it appears the many possible ways you could have given me a chance to turn the tide were avoided. I am at this point, and in fact for most of the game, dependent upon the "hope" you do something that would give me an opportunity.

playing with my phone app computer chess game I am realizing a lot of things I never saw before about how my style has always depended upon the opponents weaknesses versus my level of shock and awe bluffs. . . .

Yes, that's what I expected. If you don't take on d5, I think d6, followed by e6, would have just about won the game.

I like my position better taking with the rook. I think I'll have your counter-play under control.

OK. Well this was what I first thought this game would come to oh ten moves ago, except your preference to use your Rook here.

I did my level best to find something that would work to take it off this track.

At least it doesn't take so long to follow the possible next moves and see what might happen.

most of the results possible now come to a draw conclusion, if not a win for OB. OB isn't likely to permit one of the "win" results for me, but I agree with his assessment that it's still not certainly a "win" for him.

I didn't think you would do this, and I thought your other possible moves would provide me the win. Not real quick, but a sort of opportunity to turn the tables.

edit 11:15 MST

The reason I didn't think you would advance the pawn is because you lose it three ways, with the fourth possible move you refer to being to move the Bishop which is under attack. Some of those evasive Bishop moves don't look so bad at first, and the two most obvious ways to take the pawn without putting my King into a discovered check position will lead to a trade off leaving you with an advantage to win, a very strong advantage of another passed pawn.

In looking at the King taking the pawn, it is rarely a good thing to put a King into a discovered check, usually it is a chance for your opponent to take almost whatever piece he wants on the board that can be accessed by the discovered check move. But not in this case. . . .

So you lose your passed pawn without securing a forced sequence to mate, and with two ways forward that could lead to a loss. . . .

edit 11:37 MST

Kxe6 or if you prefer Kxp

I had a panic here because you in fact do take either of two pawns. I looked at that before and considered it merely an exchange with an advantage to me, a passed pawn for a non-passed one, leaving eventually most likely another edge passed pawn, a weaker passed pawn. . . .

I'm not going to try to sit on advantages if I can't improve upon them. I didn't see any other move that would improve my position.

Taking with the rook did let me trade off both pieces and set me up for an easy win. Taking with the bishop would have resulted in my making the same move, but you would not be forced to trade bishops at that point. If you don't, the position comes out about the same as this one will.

I thought your strongest move was Be8. I had trouble seeing a way through a defense with the K on e7 and the R on d6. So, I think this was your second-best move.

I'm exchanging a central passed pawn for a more-easily-defended wing passed pawn.

you're right. My strongest move was Be8. It was something I had seen before, and when I made the King xe6 move I realized I had done something not as good as what I had seen before. But I made it. I think I still survive, and can possibly win.

Edit 2:27 MST:

So I'm going to hurry this game along, I have leave for my trip soon, as soon as possible. I'll have a few chances to sit down and move quickly in the next hour or so.

Don't let me rush you. There are so many possibilities right now, the whole game is opened up for the first time.
