Devin Harris on Al Jefferson: Jazz fans will be surprised if they see him

Jefferson has better reach, standing vert and consequently about 3" no step vert reach on Kanter, at least coming out he did.

Maybe after that knee injury it's closer but I doubt it. Jefferson has a very good ability to quickly get a hand pretty high up. Not to mention before multiple hijacks the OP was about AJ's supposed improved basketball body.

Kanter's measurables are not his strongest suit. If he ends up a better defender than Al it won't be because of what he was born with.

Derrick Favors of course is in orbit above both of these guys and on the moon compared to Sap, comparable to Howard, McGee and Okafor.

I don't know about the offense but i am 100% sure Kanter will be a better defender than him

I'm not a participant in the Jefferson vs. Kanter debate. Mostly because I believe Kanter needs time to develop, but also because I'm patient enough to wait and see.
Having said that, the 'rest' of the story is Kanter benched 14 to Al's 3. Kanter max vert is 2.5" greater. Kanter measured a full inch and a half taller. Kanter had lane agility of 11.3 to 13.08 for Al. What does all that mean? Squat. Let's throw it up and see how it goes.

The post was in refute of the idea that Kanter will be a superior defender due to being 1 1/4 inch taller. IMO no step vertical reach, standing reach and wingspan are much more important than height.

It is also my opinion that Kanter will develop into a better player practicing with Jefferson over the next year and a half or so than being handed 30+ minutes a game.

Agree with all of that.

Anyway you gotta make choices, after 3-4 years from now, we cant keep all the guys we have right now. We dont have a guarantee Kanter or Favors will be very good players, but it is a high possiblity that they will be. And it is not a bad idea to start guys who have potential right now if we are a rebuilding team. If you think like that, then it was a bad idea that Oklahoma gave all the responsibility to Durant and Westbrook as soon as they get drafted
You are discounting the fact that there was a learning curve for Al Jefferson to learn the offense. Playing for teams like Boston and Minnesota for your first 5 or 6 years is more then enough to break any player. Before he came to Ut. He never had any kind of structured offense, of course he struggled to start the season. As the year went on he learned the offense and ended the season on a high note. Thanks for proving that he does have b-ball iq. The fact that he started slow and never gave in shows he has character.

Sepanol said He watched a lot of Al Jefferson play. If that is true, he would know Al's biggest strength was his midrange game. Anyone who watched him shoot can tell he has as soft a touch on his J as anyone on the Jazz. If you do watch as many games as you say you do, then you need to have your eyes examined.

Come one now. That's just ridiculous.
Ok, so you are going to come on here and make an irrational statement like that, like a little 5 yr. old.

If you watch the games you will clearly see he is a good capable shooter from 15 to 20 feet. That 15 footer was his best goto move.

Clearly you are not very objective on this matter. Al is very smooth and plays a finesse style. He's not a power player it's all about fakes and setting up his inside game with drop steps and the midrange game. He is a very good ft shooter from the line. His style is closer to Duncan, and nothing like shaq or Dwight Howard who are power players who can't shoot past 5 feet.

You sir are ridiculous!

Excuse me? You said he has as soft a touch on his J as anyone on the team (that is, you didn't just say he was a capable shooter). While the stats on jump shooting may not be perfect, they do exist, and they certainly don't support your retarded conclusion.

Go over to 82games.com and look at effective field goal percentage on jump shots. You should see just about everyone on the Jazz score better than Jefferson. You're claiming I'm not being objective, yet the objective measures all disagree with your assertion. Are you sure you're being objective? Are you sure you're not the ridiculous one?

Soft touch? You mean Big Al or am i mistaking?

He may be a good finisher under the rim but that doesn't make him have a good touch. And his shooting is so inconsistent. Even Favors find the bucket in couple of times 15 20 feet but that doesn't make him a good shooter. That Boozer who sucks in most aspects of the game indeed has a good mid range jump shot and maybe even millsap but not Big Al at all. I think you see only the possessions that he scored, not the ones he missed

Once Big Al got comfortable in the Jazz offensive system towards the end of the season, he was easily our most potent scorer. Unfortunately, our team defense started so-so and went downhill.
Kanter has the potential IN THE FUTURE to be a very good player for us. Not likely this year or even next though, IMO... I say the same with Favors; he's very gifted, but hasn't AS YET shown the competitive fire in the belly to be a starter. I think IN TIME he will... Remember, Kanter and Favors are both very young; giv'em time to grow!!
