Exum Update

Dante's mistakes were WAAAY overblown last year. I have pointed this out time and again but he had something like 10 bad pass TO's all of last season. I'm sorry but his mistakes were incredibly magnified last year by the fanbase. I've never seen anything quite like it. The truth is that Quin (in his own words) was much much harder on Exum than he has been on other players. Let's not feed in to a false narrative that he was out there making a ton of mistakes because it just isn't true.

Exum earned more minutes than Mack last season. It was clear that he was the better player over the second half of the year both statistically and ceiling-wise. He's smart and I garuntee you he was aware of all of this. yet Quin still went with Mack. That simply can't happen anymore. Exum has earned the right to get a consistent role the rest of the year because of the work he put in and the level he was playing at in preseason as well as the last half of last year. IF you disagree then that's fine. I don't think Royce's minutes are even going to come into the decision as he's mostly playing backup 3 now. 66% of his minutes have been at the 3 this year and my perception is that it's been more like 90% recently.

Rep so hard.

AB has been trash since January. Poor shooting and tons of turnovers. His defensive shortcomings are well documented. I don't see Exum being as bad as AB has been and even if he struggles offensively he is a plus defender and AB is a minus defender.

Nobody is saying heavy minutes. 15-20 is a reserve role and is fine to start. If he plays great we can talk about increasing them. I think the key is to actually let him play consistent minutes instead of jerking them around if he makes a few mistakes. In that way Quin needs to treat him like Rubio who played some of the worst basketball I've seen without getting benched earlier in the season.
Yeah, Rubio stunk it up earlier this year and the team lost a ton of games because of it. The problem Quin had was two-fold: 1) Rubio is owed $29 million over this year and next and Quin had to get something in return for the team's investment. 2) Quin didn't have an adequate backup to Rubio to warrant significantly cutting his minutes.

But that isn't the situation Quin faces with Exum's return. The team is fighting to make the playoffs; if Exum helps them win, then he plays, if not, then not.

Y'all forget how easily confused Dante was on defense, teams were running the same play back to back and Exum would get caught on the same no man's land island, or Durant would draw him into the same foul back to back.

Quin would pull him quick after that, every player is different and Quin doesn't coach them all the same, he'll take a young guy and limit his plays(if he has this leisure) so he has less to focus/process on that night/the next day in improving.

Some were implying Quin had something against Dante personally , I saw what he was was doing the whole time - there's a method to his madness. Trust the Process Yo

I want to see the Jazz compete in the playoffs, not just make the playoffs. In order to have a better chance of winning a series, we need at least the 6 seed. I think we can complete with Houston and GS, but winning a 7 game series would be difficult unless we hit a strecth in the playoffs when we are running on all cylinders like we have a couple times this season. With that in mind, you have to win a lot of games down the stretch. I don't think giving Exum some burn puts that at risk compared to playing Neto or cutting back Royce a few minutes (Royce has looked pretty bad the last few games on offense). Thabo is hurt already, the team needs depth, and to rely on Exum in the playoffs, you have to get him ready with playing time. Neto has played pretty bad after dealing with a couple injuries, no reason Exum can't take those minutes to start.

I'd love to see what kind of progress Dante could make if he had the longer leash that Mitchell has had this year and can hopefully avoid some injuries. Mitchell has made a ton of mistakes this year, but his other attributes and watching him grow have been worth it. Unfortunately at this point in the year, I don't think you can give Exum the same leash. But he needs some playing time, and we need to afford him some mistakes.

I don't really buy point #1. I don't think his contract has anything to do with him playing. I think Quin was just trying to let him play through his issues and it would have looked kind of bad to bench a guy in the first half of his first season here when they were talking about him being a main player. I agree on your second point, though. With Exum we actually have a legitimate contractual reason to need to see him play. They have to decide on a long term deal that could have massive implications on the future team. If you give him too much money and he isn't good then you are in some trouble. If you don't sign him for a 4 year deal and he blows up you will be kicking yourself like with Hayward. Unless they are sure how they are going to proceed it makes sense to want to see more and evaluate. It's probably the biggest issue with team building the team has now that Rodney has been moved.

DL said as much when he mentioned that they think they know what they have but they want to see how he actually performs in a regular season. That coupled with him saying the impact of losing Dante was nearly as big as Rudy means that I think they'll prioritize this much more than you seem to want to.

I think calling Dante confused is pretty unfair. Again this was a narrative that was put out there by Locke and others to explain why Dante was getting benched. Every player gets out of position occasionally, and every player gets drawn into fouls. We just focused on every single mistake Dante made and used that as justification for not playing him. And all along the way Mack was out there doing worse things and being a worse defender with not much of a peep from the same people killing Exum for it. There are certain fans/media (not saying you) who just feel the need to justify everything a coach or FO does. It can definitely go the other way as well where fans just complain about everything. I like to think that I'm not this way. I do think they badly mishandled Exum last year, though I'm very happy with both the coach and FO overall.

I agree with your point on playing Mack over Exum. Frankly, that is why we have this conundrum over how much pt Exum should get and at what position when he comes back. These issues should have been resolved last year, but Exum wasn't given much of chance to grow into his role and was relegated to 3rd string (behind Mack for hellsakes!). We saw a glimpse of what he could do against GS and I hope he can have a much bigger role in this year's playoffs. But we need to make the playoffs first.

On SEN radio’s breakfast show on Monday morning, Tony Jones of the Salt Lake City Tribune reported that Exum is “within 10 days to two weeks away from making his season debut.” He went on to further detail how Exum’s workout intensity has recently increased, and that full contact drills are now underway.

Not a big enough sample size. The guy is a better version of Lilsap...

You will cry if Royce loses minutes to Exum? I mean - you guys think Exum can't shoot, well Royce can't shoot nor get to the rim whenever he wants. But he is an excellent complementary player who is strong defensively. Having said that, he can get torched by quick guards (like all of us).

I am just concerned at what kind of role/opportunity Exum will be afforded.
Iawtp let’s not ever say “friggin” and Royce unless we are referring to him as Royce “Friggin” O’Neale when he does something awesome.

Royce does a lot of things that help us win... may never be a consistent double digit scorer but he has some elite role player potential.
So we are back to Exum having to earn every minute he gets are we? No one else has had to this year, just let the kid play.

This is like friggin Survivor. That's why I am going hard at Royce. Burks and Neto aren't even really in the rotation, freaks me out when hearing Exum will get some of those minutes . It has to be minutes from Royce. But ultimately, I want Exum extinguishing Rubio based on Exum's on court performances (and then Royce can be back to do his thing).
