Following Potential 2025 Draftees

Not a shot, a tease. You are one of my fav posters BTW.

I have not looked at dudes heights he is playing against but he's not in the Chinese Basketball league. He's playing grown men in the Bundesliga.

Cool and thanks.

I'm not an expert on international ball, although I've learned a lot this year. I'm just going off of the video I have access to (Cashiggy and Hardwood Hoops). Some of the teams he is playing against look ok, but a lot of the teams don't have great length/skill.

FWIW, I will definitely have Noa higher on my final big board. I absolutely love his ability to guard on the perimeter as a big. Right now I have him grouped with Asa Newell because I think they are similar (skinny 4's that will need some time to develop strength/skill), but when I get more granular I'll start separating guys out.

It seems like international guys have had a rough go at it the last 6-7 years outside of the tippy top tier guys like Wemby and Luka. I have a huge blindspot for them right now but I think that is why I'm kind of "meh" on them.

This is a good twitter thread on the topic of Euro ball. One thing to remember is that even if talent is higher in a league, it doesn't necessarily mean the numbers are more difficult to achieve. It's dependent on the style of play.

Yeah, it's interesting. I would love for someone with more knowledge than me to put out a power ranking with all of the leagues that prospects are playing in. He would be mine, for example, but I'm far from the most knowledgeable.

Spain
Turkey
Italy
SEC
Big 10
France
Big 12
Germany
Big East
ACC
Australia
High Mid Major
China
Low Mid Major

It's really tough, but this might be close from a statistical translation perspective. The @kalidrafts guy who made that tweet is really informed on the translations so I value his opinion a lot. I think these pro teams would beat college teams in a game, but some college players would put up big numbers in international leagues.

Depends on the type of player too. For example, Asa Newell ran through the SEC and put up really good production. But if I had imagined him in the same spot as Essengue I could see him putting up biblical numbers. That's not to say he's a better prospect than Essengue, but Asa is older/more physically mature and would absolutely destroy that competition.

Just out of curiosity I looked at the prospects out of international leagues selected in the first round of the past 7 drafts: Risacher, Sarr, Salaun, Topic, AJ Johnson, Dadiet, Wemby, Bilal, Deng, Jovic, Giddey, Sengun, Garuba, Ball, Hayes, Avdija, Poku, Balmaro, Sekou, Goga, Samanic, Doncic, Musa

IDK. I think Essengue has a solid frame for a skinny guy. I could see him being a very strong 215-ish lb player at his peak.

Seems incomplete

No way Ace only shot 22 FTA his senior year of HS

Obviously it's only from tracked competitions. But hey, that 92.9% from the FT was real after all. It just happened on 14 attempts.

2024 still is pending so who knows. Just seemed like a lot of misses in the lotto... outside of Wemby. Might not be any bigger than the normal value for the pick but seems like they have been overdrafted a bit lately. Maybe its just a bad run.

The guys from last draft are probably to soon to say anything. So I've highlighted the guys that are still in NBA rotations.

Honestly it's not too bad. A lot of the guys that aren't in NBA rotations were later first round picks anyway.

Of the lottery picks that aren't in NBA rotations it's only Deng (who's still a highly thought of prospect in OKC), and Hayes.

I'm kind of writing off Salaun. I also only kind of count Ball as international... since he was a Brandon Jennings type situation.

It just doesn't get me going when considering Noa, Saraf, Traore and some of the others.

I really think Kas deserves to be in this group we're discussing at #5 and I'd probably have him leading that group, but I just got to look away so I'm not disappointed.

Salaun was a reach in a bad draft (I was never super high on him). I think there are enough hits and only a reasonable amount of misses to not count out international guys all together.

Admittedly international ball is very different and hard to compare to NCAA. I've been trying to understand it better and it's not easy. Luckily it feels like NIL will bring more international talent to the NCAA and we'll have a better comparison in the future.

It just seems like they had a better run maybe 10 years or so ago and its been kinda mid except for the obvious guys like Luka or Wemby but maybe we got better and the obvious guys stopped slipping?

Maybe they are due for some hits tho too? Was just something rattling around in my brain.

If a good run maybe 10 years ago did not predict recent results, why would we care about how recent results predict future results? Didn't work then, why should it work now?

Scouting international prospects is harder, but part of that difficulty is that are even more of a case by case basis. NCAA players are way more like each other than International prospects, so I don't know why we would be wanting to group the International guys together in the first place.
