Jackpotting Around Podcast: Episode 37 - Keandre Ashley of Hoop Intellect

so you're saying a guy who's testing shows the fastest shuttle runs/agility testing at the combine and a 37 inch vertical can't get to the rim ?? I think the bet that he develops that in the NBA is pretty good

Its actually rare that the rim frequency % goes up when players transition into the NBA. I believe KqWIN posted some data that pointed to this very observation. Intuitively, the spacing is better in the NBA but so are the athletes. Can Tre drastically improve this part of his game? I am not so sure.

No I’m telling you the guy that struggled to get tot he rim and finish in college and as a high school senior has not shown he can get tot the rim and finish lol. This ain’t a track meet it’s basketball… we have actual useable functional information here. Jebus.

Tre actually got to the rim more in high school and was more of a playmaker in high school as well.

and lots of varied context. and how old is the dude. I'm projecting 3-4 years down the track. When your boy certainly won't be able to get to the rim.

Ahhh the guy you like will obviously fix all his flaws while the guy you hate who is good at something will obviously be exposed… got it.

I mean if you want to take it to a hysterical overreaction/conclusion sure.

I don't see how it's a stretch that the guy who is a far superior athlete is more likely to develop that part of his game than a dude who's obviously limited in that department. Don't shoot the messenger dude. If we already had a good team and were picking 12th i'd love to get the dumpy slow white guy who can shoot great. This is the highest pick in forever for the Jazz and shouldn't be wasted on a guy with such obvious limitations.

lol yeah I’m hysterical. The dumpy slow white guy outperformed the far superior athlete on the activity stats… outperformed him in getting to the rim and finishing as well as getting free throws. But yeah the balance beam and long jump he sucks at… shrug.

SEC truthers must think CMB is Jesus. Do people know that other players played in the SEC? That other teams outside of the SEC had a tougher schedule than Texas?

Guys who can carry their team offensively while being the focal point of the defense have to be considered as players with "more than role player" potential. Tre did that quite a few times.

It doesnt mean he can do it in the NBA, but at least he was able do it in college... and thus he deserves some benefit of doubt.

Hmmm... Kon stans tell me which games to check? I see he had a monster game in the ACC tournament quarterfinals against Georgia Tech where Flagg was injured and next 2 games he played without Flagg... so are those the ones I should prioritize?

Great pod guys, super cool to have Keandre talk about the Jazz for an hour.

- Thanks for asking a lot of the questions I recommended!
- I loved the story of Keandre starting his video editing at the library. He seems like a really likable/humble guy.
- It feels like he thinks the Jazz have more pieces to the puzzle than the average Jazz fan. Although it also felt like he could see any player fitting in to the Jazz as well.

Good Stuff!

Those would be the ones to watch if you want to see him without Flagg.

Georgia Tech, UNC, Louisville ACC Tourney games

If you want some lowlight games:

He was missing all his 3s in the Kansas game but still was able to contribute a bit.

Didn't look that good against Arizona.

Those are most of the ones I have watched via. Cashiggy videos on youtube. His game is pretty straightforward. Don't think you need to watch hours of Kon to understand what he brings to the table.

There was some talk about learning from past draft mistakes and I think it is an interesting topic. I think we can sometimes react too much from past draft mistakes, or sometimes learn the wrong things. For example I think there was something about learning to not draft small guards, but maybe the real lesson was about taking guards who don't defend. I also think we sometimes overrate guys in the draft based on the player they remind us of who is doing well in the NBA, which I think can be a mistake especially when that player is a 1:1, like drafting a huge slow center because they can pass a little and thinking they are going to be like Jokic. Or the huge number of raw athletic guys that have been drafted that were supposed to be the next Giannis. Since draft season intersects with the playoffs I think we often overrate what we see in the playoffs as well. We are going to have 7 different NBA champs over the last 7 years and they all had different types of teams with a variety of different types of players.
