Restricted Free Agents to Pursue

They give us a fair trade deal now or we **** them in free agency. This is definitely not a “match everything” situation for NYK. Real risk of losing him. I hate to even say the forbidden L word but the Knicks do not have it here.
Could even front load it to make it a bit more of an issue for them the next couple years. Going into the tax makes it harder to make a star trade... which is why they keep kicking stuff down the road. Quickley has an expiration date now... sell by trade deadline or risk being bullied into a corner.

I watched a fair amount of Minny last year, but I must be doing it wrong. I just never saw what others seem to see in McDaniels. I'm not sure what I'm missing.
He's really good on stars. I think he probably got a bit overpaid because I just don't trust him offensively. Don't think he's really good enough as a 3rd scorer

Yup….and besides injuries I expect Quickley to get less minutes than last year. He sounds like a good soldier, but less minutes means he will become more unhappy and his trade value will also become less. They are negging their own guy. If NYK wants the most value they should do it as soon as they can….and if they don’t they are going to get pushed around in RFA.

Next time you watch just watch him defend. He gets after it. He's mostly just solid on offense but it comes without the ball... he's developing into the perfect role player.

I think I pay attention to defense and off ball stuff more than most, and I think McDaniels is a little overrated there. He can get in to a guy, but he'll take plays off and gets lost at times.

On offense he's just not very skilled yet.

As far as potential, he's got a ton, so I guess I get that. He's a really fluid athlete and should continue to get better. I thought he was noticeably better from the first of the year to the end of the year.

I’m with you. Its not an egregious amount but not some steal or something.

Maybe its years of PTSD from watching our perimeter defenders but he always stands out to me. Gets a steal and a block and does it while locking down. Its also versatility... big enough to go out there on your bigger wings and fast enough to hang with guys like Steph.

I think he's shown enough flashes on the ball and isn't just a PJ Tucker stand in the corner guy. I think there is more there. Outside of punching walls he seems to be pretty durable. I see more potential in him than a guy like OG who is terrible with the ball but everyone seems to think there is more there. Jaden will make a dribble into a middy here and there that make you think.

Anyone with space that needs a guard is going to see the blood in the water here (I think) as the salary issues NY will have re-signing Brunson and potentially Randle on top of matching IQ and the middling salaries they already committed to... they really should have sold high on IQ if they weren't going to find an extension number.

I do wonder if NY knows they can get in on KAT this year. The salary is tough to do but IQ would be an intriguing fit/option in Minny... if they moved KAT to NY I'm sure he'd be one of the guys at the top of the list they'd want.

I think it's possible too they might be using him as bait if a star player such as KAT, Mitchell, Embiid, Anunoby or whoever comes available. They pretty much already know IQ is getting a huge contract regardless if he gets it now or next summer in RFA. Maybe looking at risk reward they figure they will wait on the extension and still have his contract to use in a star trade? Maybe I'm wrong but my understanding is none of these guys can basically be traded this season after signing these extensions today.

Deni is still very tradeable. Cole/Josh can too... the lower the annual salary the easier it is to make the math work. Guys going from 4M to 20M+ are the ones where it doesn't work... so that is an issue with IQ for sure.

From Fred Katz at the Athletic:

The Magic are young, talented, will have loads of cap space and could seek out a point guard who fits their timeline and would complement up-and-coming studs Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. The Utah Jazz will have room, could use a point guard and their president, Danny Ainge, has been a fan of Quickley’s dating back to the 2020 draft, when Ainge was running the Boston Celtics. The San Antonio Spurs will have space, both financially and on the roster, to add another guard. Who knows what happens with the Philadelphia 76ers, who could have cap room or not and already employ Quickley’s college teammate, Tyrese Maxey? Maybe the universe allows the two best unextended players from the 2020 draft class to reunite.

if we could get tyrese maxey it would be a huge get. the only way the sixers let him go is if embid asks out and they decide to blow it all up. it would take a lot to get him but it would be worth it. maybe 4 1st round picks.

Too much. I like him a lot as well but he’s not really gettable imo. I’d max him out and try but likely know they will match.

My question is would you do a trade with the Knicks something like this?

NYK

Quickly and Fournier (for salaries) and filler

For

Sexton and/or THT or Olynyk (they would probably want a big)
1 or 2 first

I figure they would want olynyk and either THT (expiring contract may interest them) or Sexton (longer cost controlled salary) I would at least ask for 2 firsts.

Fournier is for salary only and the reason for only 1 first because he has 2 years left. Not sure if the second is guaranteed at this point. There would need to be one more salary added for a fringe player to make it work.

Quickley, George, Dunn
Agbaji, Clarkson, Fournier (if not cut)
Markkanen, Sensabaugh, fonticchio
Collins, Hendricks
Kessler, yurtsrven

Maxey is not available, he is only unsigned because it allows PHI to have more cap space next summer. Having said that, is he actually a better player than Quickley? Im not so sure. But he will get paid more.
