Stupid Pet Peeves

That's nice that you like him, but would you feel the same way if you were black? Maybe you should ask him how a black 12-year-old would feel should they happen to walk by his house.

You're in Utah, right? There is no place for that ****, I don't care how nice the dude might seem. Are you willing to have that discussion with him?

He doesnt think himself or that flag to be racist. Im not gonna get into a huge argument with him and possibly make an uneccesary enemy across the street from me. That would be foolish of me. Im too logical to do something so dumb. I know nothing good would come of it. Im not going to change this 50 something year olds perspective. If i thought i could change him then sure. But i know i cant.

As for your black 12 year old comment, i bet most black 12 year olds in my neighborhood dont even know what that flag means being that most all of the black kids in my neighborhood are first generation americans that have only been here for a very short time from africa.

When i was 12 i didnt think about politics, racism, flags, or any of them. It was beaten into me as i got older.

Gotta take into the fact that you have to live with them, I had a similar problem when my neighbours were selling meth, I had a different approach, fortunately the Police sorted it before things came to a head.

I think almost any black 12-year-old knows exactly what the flag represents, and their parents do too of course. You're a good dude Fish, and if I were presented with the same situation it would be tough but I would ask the guy if he recognizes the hurt it causes, and maybe suggest that he move it inside his home or at least out of view of the street since it's so offensive to many people. Maybe you were raised in Utah, where things are different than most places. I was raised outside of Detroit where if you flew that flag you were asking for serious trouble beyond property damage. Regardless, flying that flag in front of your home is deeply offensive and asking for it, IMO.

But i mean why would you want to start a war with a neighbor over a flag.
My neighbor has a confederate flag on display. He is a great neighbor though. If i ever need help with a project or need to borrow something (a ladder or some tools) he is always willing to help. He plays with my dog, loves my daughter, takes my garbages in for me when im camping, calls to let me know i left my garage door open. He invites me over for parties or to sit by his fire in the back yard and have some beers.

But i could ruin all of that by hating him for that stupid flag that i dont like. Then maybe he vandalizes my stuff, looks the other way if he sees someone breaking into my house, calls the cops if i have a loud party, etc etc.

His ignorance with that flag and with his politics in general doesnt change the fact that he is a really good neighbor and a nice guy who is fun to hang out with.

BTW, Hitler used to like to party too. People thought he was a good guy, even. Then **** started to get weird. I bet your neighbor started flying his flag relatively recently, right? Probably not when Obama was President. Intolerance is growing rapidly under Trump. We either let it happen or stand up to it. I know which side of history I'll be on.

And you mentioned he's not racist and doesn't think the flag represents that. What does he think it represents? Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Str8line is triggered

Yeah, so triggered for standing up to repugnant behavior toward fellow Americans. Pretty obvious where we're headed as a country under Trump. You're fine with that though aren't you, rare? Well as I've said here several times, my dad(and mom) already lived through that **** under Hitler and you're foolish of you think Trump's rise and the vitriol and acquiescence of our residents isn't similar.

"Displaying the flag has long been controversial in the United States, due to the flag's longstanding associations with treason, racism, slavery, segregation, and white supremacy.[1][2][3] Southerners associate the Confederate battle flag with pride in their heritage and traditions, but it is impossible to separate the flag from its association with the defense of slavery and racial bias.[4]
Despite the common belief that "the Confederate flag" has remained in uninterrupted use since the end of the American Civil War, its use was mostly limited to historical films, like Gone with the Wind (1939). Its revival in the 1950s and 1960s came about because of the American Civil War Centennial, but was also used to show opposition to the Civil Rights Movement, starting with Senator Strom Thurmond's Dixiecrats in 1948. Racism played a major role in its renewed popularity.[5]"

What of the us flag to native americans?
This is America where we gloss over as many uncomfortable truths as we can. As long as we can go eat at a buffet at one of their casinos we're all good, right?

Go on. What of the US flag? Are there sizable groups of Native Americans that find it offensive? If so, since the country will have a flag regardless, do they have recommendations to improve the situation?

Or, was this just another thoughtless whataboutism?

There a (perhaps stupid) pet peeve; whataboutisms.

Does it have to be sizable? At what size of offended group does it become unacceptable?

I'm sure you can find individuals who are offended by any particular symbol you can name. As the offensiveness of the symbol rises, so does the number of those who find it offensive.

Much like obscenity, you have to know it when you see it. :)

my stupid pet peeve is that there are a few pretty simple words I just cannot reliably spell correctly. Separate is one of them and restaurant is another.
