All about context. Trumps failings our well known. To still be focusing on them 3 months out of office, and either unable or scared to criticize the left on one thing shows you are a hopeless, lost slave to the media machine.
Well, I think we should assign accountability to what happened on January 6th. That’s going to take a very long time, both in investigating the events of that day, investigating where responsibilities lay leading up to that day, and, regardless of how Trump supporters feel( and in general they will always cast Trump, and themselves as the victims), that is also going to have to include Trump himself, regardless of how long after his administration officially ended. Here is what his own defense chief, regarding the Capital riot, had to say, his opinion of cause and effect where Trump’s words and the resultant effect are concerned:
His failings, and no greater failing then his willingness to craft an Orwellian stage Big Lie, even as any thinking person should be able to understand how damaging a Big Lie will be to a democratic society, led us both to Jan. 6th, and to a situation where a majority of self described Republicans embrace an alternative reality that describes what did not happen on Nov. 3rd, 2020. Once you destroy consensus reality in this way, by laying the groundwork for the Big Lie months in advance of the election, and then try to alter the outcome based on that Big Lie, I’m afraid one cannot let go of Trump’s failings. They will be paramount in understanding and assigning responsibility for Jan. 6th and for damaging our democratic institutions, witness Republican efforts to use voter suppression at the state level, efforts which can be summarized as “let’s make sure what did not happen on Election Day 2020 never happens again”.
It really is not our fault, those of us who believe in assigning accountability for these events, that Trump’s failings are center stage. It was his stage, he used it as he saw fit, the judgement is going to take some time. I see this as something we owe to future generations of Americans....
