What am I missing with Collin Sexton? Why is he so undervalued?

He seems to be much better than Conley ever was offensively yet Conley was someone who many people said was always criminally underrated. Conley had better assist numbers, but he never appeared to be the great floor general everyone claimed he was going to be here. Conley has always managed to be overpaid as well, which I don't understand how that helped the underrated argument, but most people probably weren't paying attention to Memphis, I know I wasn't.

Conley was an incredible floor general. Did you miss his on/off numbers the past two years, especially the 2020-2021 season?

The disappointing thing about Conley is that he didnt seem to be a vocal leader who could keep the team together off court.

Conley makes everyone better at the expense of his own numbers. Collin doesn't... he is a better individual scorer... like he is elite at that. He has tunnel vision though and not sure he can balance creating for others and scoring all the time. It was something that Donovan never really figured out consistently.

I think people just don't understand Mike. Might be guys that don't play. There are just dudes that know what the eff is going on the court and help you win.

Part of me want to keep Mike to help Collin. Part of me thinks he helps us win a bit too much. I'm good either way but Mike's value being low is so wild to me. Like the Lakers should be falling over themselves to get Bogey and Mike... and I think they prefer JC or Malik.

Keep in mind that the salary cap has been increasing year after year so $18M three years from now is going to seem like an incredible bargain even if he's around 18-20 PPG.

Part of me feels bad that Conley is likely to remain here due to his salary and be a consummate professional knowing that he's not on a contender, but I do think he has some worth as a locker room presence. Maybe he even gets to increase his trade value a bit this season and we can offload him before the deadline, who knows.

Yeah... a little. He is getting paid of course. I think we will do right by him if we have a chance.... and I think we will have that chance.

I think there are many instances of numbers being inflated due to players being on the court with Gobert. Conley also missed a bunch of games due to injury and didn't play in back to back games etc. I think there are other factors that can be at play here- I don't see that as something that can be automatically pointed to as evidence he was a great floor general. He did come up clutch at times, but he also seemed to fumble the ball away in critical situation just as often.

Mitchell could make some defensive plays with his length every now and then and wasnt always terrible on D. The Dallas series was a new low.
I think it was not by accident. The more I think about it, the more I think he leaned into being a ****-*** so as to get out of Utah and away from this terrible situation where he had everyone covering his mistakes, no accountability, free reign of everything behind the scenes, and was placed on a pedestal to be worshipped by towheaded children.

Reputation for having tunnel vision, ball dominant, doesn’t make his teammates better. Hoping we can rehabilitate his image, get him to play some defense and flip him down the road for something desirable.

This was exactly why I wanted to be free of Mitchell. I am not a fan of a guy who will choose to slack off on some aspect of the job that, you know, PAYS HIM ****ING MILLIONS TO PLAY A GAME WITH A BALL, just because he is pouty. Give me someone who plays hard regardless any day of the week. This is the one trait that Mitchell needs to fix or he will go nowhere. He will get mad at another situation for whatever reason, be highly passive-aggressive about it, stop playing D or passing or something, so he can get traded where he wants to be. That isn't a winning player, so no need to hang on any longer.

Maybe teams thought that meniscus tear could have major impact on his overall speed & athleticism?

I find it mind-blowing that in 2022, people still value scoring as much as they do. It's like the last decade never happened. Most guards and most wings come out of college knowing how to shoot and knowing how to drive. The rules have changed to skew things towards offense, and especially perimeter offense, tremendously. And you still have people talking about how Barrett scored 20 a game and that's got to count for something.

Most of the league can put up 20 a game if you give them the green light and absolve them from having to put in any effort on defense. That's just how the league is nowadays. Who's the last guard prospect you can think of who came into the league as a defensive specialist with little offensive game? There are no Nate McMillans any more and Ricky Rubio might just be the last of this dying breed. Teams aren't looking for guys who can get 10 assists a game by getting it to their center in his sweet spot, while taking 4-5 shots a game themselves.

This isn't to say that Sexton may not develop into a decent player, but acting like a 20+ scoring average is the same as being a net-positive as a player is hilariously outdated.

So my question, to beat a dead horse, is if hypothetically Sexton is 80% Mitchell (just using that number since it was mentioned) and you didn’t do the Gobert trade but then had Sexton and went shopping with the picks and pick swaps? The only disadvantage you have is not being able to tank for an asset this year, so we will see how that works out. I still remain quite skeptical on what those draft assets from Minnesota actually end up becoming.

The Minnesota picks have more value than the Cleveland picks at this present moment.

I am fascinated by what we could have built if we made this Mitchell trade but kept Gobert.

Oh well.

This is 100% the case.

I actually still think there’s a fair chance that Conley gets dealt before the season starts. I think some team is going to realize that the Jazz are probably willing to sell low on him and will offer a player with positive value if the Jazz will take back some salary that is less than great.

Mitchell became a bitch. Good riddance.
