Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

Hopefully he knows enough (and is pretty damn sure on that) to wait it out. If so, kudos, but I still see it possible that another team can swoop in unexpected who wants his second year.

Who though? I can see maybe Portland if Chicago takes Leonard.

Unless an injury happens I’m not sure a Niko contender with a late/mid frp is going to materialize.

I really think once Monroe picks he’s destination a deal happens and it makes sense. I think there is a greater than 50% chance he lands with us.

I think a number of unexpected teams could move for him, especially if they cleared longer contracts (even with picking up his option). Boston, Miami, Dallas, Washington, etc. Nobody would have said NOP until news broke. Yeah, it fell through because of cap clearing, but nobody would have seen that move coming. Just like FA and RFA, all it takes is one.

Woj says NO is the front runner for Monroe.

Does NO like JJ?

Also, Portland has never cared about the LT. They could trade Meyers Leonard and get a significant upgrade there.

Washington has cap issues too and wouldn’t want to send a pick... Miami doesn’t have picks and has cap issues, Dallas ain’t offering their pick... maybe their second but they in tank mode.

Boston maybe but contract matching is an issue and he’s not a big need.

I’m telling you we are still good here. If NO get Monroe they won’t want Niko.

We good here... trust the DL.

They will though at some point. Being a repeater hinders roster flexibility. They also have Akoni starting at PF and he is really important to them:

Boston scares me most. Hate Ainge. Anyway, they can send Baynes and Morris and don't they have multiple picks? They can then just sign Bogut.

I don’t see a big need there and Baynes is better than Bogut. They might but I think they’d be more interested in evans or a true center. They also likely wouldn’t want to add salary for next year... need to look at their situation.

So NO can offer like $750k to Monroe... Boston can offer up to $8m... will be interesting to see what they offer and if Monroe would pass on a few million for a couple months of service... just to start and stay home.

I’d take the money if it was 4-5M + but he could use NO as leverage to get Boston to offer it all... or close to it.

Agreed. And if NO gets Monroe then I like our chances of landing Mirotic even more. Seems like they were the only team desperate enough to give a first. If they get Monroe then they might cool on the Mirotic trade.

I would think Boston would for sure be in the running for Niko. They need more shooting and I would assume would prefer Niko to a Monroe considering their defensive philosophy of switching everything. The problem would be matching salary for sure.

Baynes and Morris matches.

I'm not quite sure why this trade wouldn't be ideal for all 3:

Pelicans get Joe Johnson and Utah's 2nd
Jazz get Mirotic
Bulls get Asik, Cunningham (expiring), and NOLA protected 1st

Pelicans get a player who isn't as good as Mirotic, but they still get to dump Asik. They also get to clear some space to make a better offer to Monroe. And Asik for Mirotic actually cost the Pelicans more money than JoeJ would.

Jazz get Mirotic. Duh

Bulls get a better deal since Cunningham is better than Ajinca. And there is no confirmation that Ajinca was a definite in the recently failed Mirotic to NOLA for Asik and a 1st deal.

I could see Boston jumping in. Would mean they are not re-signing Smart next year as it would put them in LT... and they won’t want to go into tax until the following year to avoid repeater status.

I think they’d send Morris... I think Chicago would want to send him elsewhere.

So will ainge offer a pick, Morris, and baynes for Niko? I think that’s an overpay but if they think they can get to the finals... which they should then I could see it.

Also **** Boston.

Not necessarily. Morris has been and is their best player to throw at KD and LeBron.

He’s not a great fit on offense and if you are relying on him against Lebron and KD then you screwed.

I’ve heard Simmons and o Conner complain about how he stops the ball on offense which is not what they are about obvi.
