What's new

Gamethread: Utah @ Jeffersons Tonight 5pm or some such time

Itd be funny if we did have the worst record and we sonehow wound up with the 4th pick.. then gais like Thriller will all be like WEz SHOULDA NEVER TANKED. Shouldve kept the vets. Its Lindsays fault!

How many fans will lose interest because of the endless mediocrity? The jazz under the Al Jefferson/Millsap Regime were incredibly mediocre. As was fan attention.
I'm with you on the Al teams. Not fun to watch, no chance at contention. I was fine with what DL did this offseason.

I would also have been fine with DL re-signing Millsap and Carroll, and trying to build the way the Jazz have always built.

How many fans will lose interest when the Jazz win fewer than 30 games for 2+ seasons? Will the slim hope of a savior keep them more interested than mediocrity?

It's hard to see so many fans cheering for losses. I watch basketball because I enjoy watching basketball. I want to cheer for a team that's trying to win and plays the right way, but I also would love to see my team win a championship. Tanking guarantees ****ty basketball and nothing else. There's a trade-off here. It's not as black-and-white as some seem to think.

Betting on the lottery is the exact opposite of controlling your destiny. You are putting your hopes on some ping pong balls.

I agree in the sense that I ****ing want Jabari hardcore. Lol. So yeah.

I truly believe this draft is different. You don't need insane luck of the ping pong balls granting you the #1 pick to get a stud. The worst record guarantees a top 4 pick which, in this draft, I think gets you a stud. Will the player we draft have a 100% chance at panning out? No, of course not. But it's the best shot we have, or will have for the foreseeable future to grab that stud we need to put us in contention.

How can any jazz fan be happy about the direction this season and franchise is going?

??? I'm dumbfounded by this statement.
I'm quite happy with the direction of the franchise. The last two pages of this thread is the collective Jazzfanz bipolar behavior of dealing with a win in a tankful year. So i understand that. But as we've all noted, the ultimate year would be to have a very bad record but also have excellent proof of promise in the youngsters and we are approaching that in my opinion. I don't think the ideal is achievable. But that is the reason for the bipolar nature fanboard: we have differing opinions.

Any griping about Trey Burke is asinine in my opinion. He is showing, at this age/experience that he WILL be good player. He WILL be a clutch player. The NBA maturity process is multiple years. Tony Parker was not a good shooter early on and now for years, i don't think he's missed a shot... I'm happy about Trey Burke as a Jazzman.

DFav is also on a great trajectory. I like his game, all aspects. He is NOT being asked at this time to post up and score each time he touches the ball. (DeMarcus Cousins-ish) I'm great with that. Sometimes stats are an accurate assessment and sometimes they are not. Kanter and Favors have had some similar statistical games this year and it is clear that Favors is much better at this point.

I'm happy with Hayward as well. He's been given a green light to exercise and practice his game this year, which i think accounts for the "unfair" treatment some have with him because he has been inconsistent. The Jazz are hedging their bet that he's got the potential to be a good to great player someday, I agree. He's doing a lot of things on the court that are maturing his game. No he's not paul george. But tonights game was one in which he illustrated his rebounding maturity. Also, he was the one setting up the offense a lot tonight. He threw the ball away a couple of times that are part of the 'green light' in which he's being asked to extend his boundaries a bit. I'm ok with that. That is tankful behavior and maturing at the same time. Perfect.

As GVC pointed out, there is a limit to which the Jazz can 'tank' before it becomes so much that fans quit watching. They are riding that line pretty well at the moment. (I bet Trey is exceeding their expectations at this stage and making this more difficult) I will say that i hope the Jazz make sure that the players will get some "injury" rest time. That is reasonable tank methodology. With 7 teams now with the same record as the Jazz (essentially) i'm in fear for the tank. I think the Jazz mgt will see the same. Let's see if they take some steps here and rest some folk.

And for the record, I'm a believer that Ty is in on the Tank. His job, is to ride that fine line. I don't see ticket revenue and Jersey sales, but if were me, i'd add a couple of tank actions right about now...

How can we be happy about a 7-16, 4 assist night? That's not the efficiency the Jazz need from their PG.

obviously you didn't watch the game.

trey killed bobcats' momentum 3 times in 4th qtr. without his timely clutch shots, we don't win this game.

he is the future.

7-16 is nothing special; it's certainly a solid game (44%). The 0 TO's IS great. But only 4 assists? Burke is shooting 39% for the season thus far. That's TERRIBLE!
I just don't get the gushing love some have for Trey. Guess it's because Lucas, Tinsley, Garrett and Burks have been so bad at the point. Burke looks like he'll be in the mid-range in terms of starting PG's. There are a lot worse, but at least half the teams have or will have better PG's. Jazz have a core of good, but not great players. Lindsey can add another couple of nice players in the draft. But without a couple of stars, the Jazz have ZERO chance of ever contending. And I just don't see how the Jazz get those players. Have to hope for luck in the lottery, I suppose.

again, you didn't watch the game.

trey started slow. 1-5. and he had 2 fouls so he sat.

evans - misses highlight dunk
jefferson - misses easy layups
kanter - airballs wide open 15fter.

and trey missed couple of layups, but these came from heavy traffic.

watch the game and stop analyzing stat sheets.

I'm starting to join the group that believes fg% is a worthless stat. Something like eFG or TS tells the story much better, we need to account for the 50% increase in value of 3s, and Trey made 4 ( of 8 ). More efficient than meets the eye.

Anyone rooting for the Jazz to win games this year is just wrong. There is no benefit in winning this year. Unlike most years this draft has 2 and maybe as many as 5 true franchise players. Getting one can change your fortunes for the next 15 years. Those people that want to see wins this year are bonkers.

Not only that but we are beating other teams that are via for top picks this defeats the purpose. also, it isn't that impressive to squeak out. a win vs these teams

Again Hayward 3-11 from the field and the future of the Jazz?
Kanter 4-8 but he shot an airball lets cut him?

Play fair people.

Exactly. Trey's three point shooting is still not a sure thing but will be at 38% after tonight. Most of the elite PGs have a career average far under that number.

another victim of espn hype machine.

Someone also make me understand why Jefferson is getting any minutes at all. He flat out told the world this week he is not resigning with the Jazz he is "going championship hunting." So lets get this straight, last year he was considered crap on the bottom of the shoe you scrape off at Golden State. I think he played less than five minutes a game. Golden State essentially pays the Jazz to take on his crappy contract. Corbin the veteran loving fool that he is decides to start him and play him major minutes over Burks (who is really coming on strong lately). What do the Jazz get for revitalizing his career? Not the chance to resign him next year on a favorable contract; they get kicked in the face. Yet Corbin still played him almost 21 minutes. Why?? Who cares if he is playing well?? He's just trying out for other teams. Why do the Jazz let themselves be used?? Why not at least play guys who will be with the team next year?
