Jazz Defensive rankings

Meaningless since they take 25 seconds to jack up long two's every possession. Rest look interesting thus far.
Jazz are at 84.1 pts per 100 possessions allowed. Currently the Spurs are in second, more than 5 points per 100 possessions behind. Yes, the Jazz have played against 3 ****ty offenses, but the defense has been very good by any measure.

Having an elite defense gives the offense a huge margin for error. Our offense, from the all-star break last year onwards, has been slightly above league average.

"Meaningless" isn't the word I'd use to sum that up, but to each his own.

Not really. They're trash outside of Derrick's improved performances. It's pretty non-existent outside him.

They're 6th in the league, and maybe that does have a lot to do with Favors improved performances, but so what? He is part of the team isn't he? His points do go to the jazz right?

I think I saw Cy state in a different thread that Hayward has taken the next step defensively. Can others confirm? I only saw the game against Detroit.

I will confirm this. You should've seen him stick it to PG. PG didn't do much when Hayward was guarding him. It was like they were joined at the hip. There was even one moment where PG got really frustrated with how Hayward defended him.

According the NBA.com Defensive tracking, players Hayward is guarding are shooting:

26.3% Overall
0% 3-point
37.5% from inside 6-feet
33.3% from inside 10-feet
14.3% greater than 15-feet

Small sample size but he has locked down.

Wow. He's beasting on that end. In my opinion two things are hurting his offense.

Sometimes great defense causes a players offense to suffer then add the emergence of Hood and Favors and the return of Burks

I'm satisfied that my point has been made.

Well done.

Back to watching my Broncos curb stomp the Packers.

Can Gobert learn to do this? If he can we win championships.

I agree PPG is useless without using pace or number of possesions. The best indicator is Defensive Rating (Defensive Efficiency as you have it). Jazz give up 87.1 points per 100 possessions which is absolutely insane considering the best Defensive Rating last season was the Warriors at 101.4. But also the 76ers offense last season was one of the worst of all time and they don't look much better even with Okafor. It definitely will be interesting to see if the Jazz can get a defensive rating under 100. Hasn't been done since those great defensive teams in Indy from 2012-2014

Ppg is not worthless when it's the best in the history of the nba.... As the rest of your stats show. (87.1 points per possession)

Regardless of what the jazz offense is doing, pace of play, etc etc.... 79 ppg for the opponent is fantastic.

Franklin is failing again

79 ppg from the opponent is not meaningless. Obviously.

If the jazz were to continue averaging that number then they would be the #1 seed in the league.

Most likely no, never. To have such fluidity isn't just repetition starting age 24.. There is a talent there, honed through time. No if Gobert can have a decent hook shot to 6/8 feet that would be tops. if he can shoot FTs at 65% or more + learns how to become an aggressive roll player, thant he will go all the way up to 15ppg almost organically I think.

Well for example, the Warriors had the best defense rating in the league last year but were 15th in opponent PPG. Solely using PPG doesn't get you anything.

Lets see how shiny those numbers look after we face the Warriors, Clippers, and Thunder. (3 teams with superstar PGs)

I hope they still look great, but, I can just imagine Westbrook feasting on the Jazz defenders. Might be a good matchup to start Millsap.
