JAZZ vs. Bobcats - Orlando Pro Summer League - 1pm et 7/5/10

My problem with Gaines aside from the problems from the free throw line is that he seems to play out of control on the offensive end and doesn't take good shots. He does play defense which is nice, but he was a liability offensively in my opinion.

You are being too harsh in both respects. Gaines was a great hustler, provided double-digit scoring, and an OK A/TO ratio. I wish that Layden had told Gaines to run the offense more. (In other words, not enough in-game strategy.)

Gaines can't shoot and can't run an offense. That is not a good combination for a PG. Sure he can draw fouls in The Parade To The Free Throw Line they sometimes call summer league, but I'm not even sure how much good that does when he can't make his FTs.

Hayward had a solid, smart game. Got involved in a lot of plays. Didn't seem to get beaten much, although he was shy about shooting sometimes and probably let Gerald Henderson and other wings get a few more points than would be ideal. Got the post-game feature interview.

Agreed. That's sounds like exactly what we would be saying about a guy picked 30th overall.

The only guys that should make the jazz team are Hayward,Koufus. The only players that should sniff the jazz bench are Gaines,Jeffers and maybe Augustine.

What I learned: Hayward will get to play in regular season jazz games. He didn't force anything, ran around like crazy without the ball, and mostly stayed infront of his man.

I wanted to believe in Kofus, but it was tough to judge his development going up against an all-star vetran like alexis ajinca.

Sadly Koufus is already on the team, he did have the most rebounds in the game, which is nice.

On a separate note, one stat that speaks volumes for me is that every starter except Koufos got a blocked shot.

Can't base everything on one game, but Gaines played horrible today.
I still like him as a player, and still positive on him, but this was not a good game for him.

Hayward was smart and solid like predicted. Still not worth a top 10 pick.
Not many people here thought he was a bad player, just not the value at number 9.
On a positive note for Hayward, I really like how he goes after rebounds. That's the one area of his game that is elite right now,
and will make a big impact for us. The rest of his game looks solid, but nothing special.

Koufos was the biggest disappointment of the night for me. What a joke.
I think his time is winding down with us, and the NBA. There is zero improvement in his game.
He can't finish, can't make a lay up, and was destroyed on defense. There is a reason he slipped, and we
sadly know exactly why now (and all of last year).

Please, if a 30th overall pick played like that today we would be praising KOC's nuts. Many top 10 picks dont even last past their rookie contracts. I like how yal act like all top 10 picks are guaranteed NBA starters, they arent.

Seriously - I shouldn't be so hard on him. He looked almost as good as Lance Stephenson is looking.

Fun game to watch, nice comeback against the more NBA experienced Bobcat roster. My opinions:

Hayward: Looked timid early on but you can tell why the Jazz like him. Doesn't force anything and usually makes the right decision. Underated defender.
Augustine: He has improved, could be a serviceable bench guy.
Koufas: Same ole. Moves well for a 7 footer but still has clubs for hands.
Jeffers: He really needs a jumpshot to sell the rest of his game. Not sure he should be back next year.
Gaines: Uuugh. He is agressive and gets to the line but misses half his foul shots. Solid defender.
Evans: Did absolutely nothing. Averaged 10 and 6 as a senior...hate the pick.

He had a bad shooting day from the field and didn't try to run the offense, but we're looking for a second or third-string player out of him.

You're still being overly critical--and believe me, I know critical.

A low-mistake, perfect-shooting performance with contributions on both ends of the floor is promising. On the last shot, he passed to an open man. Smart playing. One of the better performances from a first-time player. Including Deron Williams.

Hustled on defense, but still got beat a bit. True test is against NBA-level players, but it's a good sign to hold serve with the summer-leaguers.

Hayward's game today reminded me of AK's first summer league game back in 01. Didn't look great but did a lot of things good.

I think Hayward wanted to shoot, but his high BBALL IQ told him Gaines had a buzzer beater 3 pointer under his belt, so he deferred to the veteran.

I agree. The pick is promsing. Although I was originally not thrilled with the pick, I am coming around. The easiest thing in the league is to draft a player that can score in the D-league. (see Morris Almond). It is much harder to draft the skills that we witnessed in Hayward today. The boy can play. If Gaines had been more concerned with running the team, Hayward would have put up better all around numbers. Hayward had some real nice cuts to the hoop that Gaines missed. D-will doesn't miss.

I missed the game. Does anybody know if it will be uploaded anywhere for replay? thanks.
