Kevin Durant - Racist Remarks on Hayward....surprised...

racism = prejudice + power

No. Racism is believing that people's characteristics are determined by their "race". It is a question of intent and degree. Had Durant meant it as "white people shouldn't be allowed in the NBA due to their inferior athleticism" then it would have been racist and unacceptable, because the brown-ness of his face doesn't give him moral immunity. As it stood, it was a tongue in cheek play on the stereotypes thrown in a friendly manner at a colleague.

My god people are offended so easily. KD should be able to say "Hayward is athletic for a cracker" without any scrutiny. Grow some balls people.
I agree.
I also think Hayward should be able to say Roy hibbert is not very athletic for a black guy without people getting offended.

I bet people would get offended by that comment though.

naw, that's racial prejudice. Not racism. It would have been prejudiced if he said that, and bigoted.

Power is not a necessary element of racism. I cannot understand what you think you are accomplishing by adding that in.

it's a well-acknowledged, necessary element of racism, my friend-- particularly in many contemporary sociological circles who examine this phenomenon for a living.

It's Dalamon. Everything white people do is wrong, and everything everyone else does is relative and shouldn't be judged.

especially white music. Sheesh. Thank God for black people. Can you imagine popular music if it was just made by white people?

Classical and country music. Two worst genres of music out there.

And here comes the appeal to authority. Didn't take you 5 minutes.

If you can't support an argument logically, then confuse it with semantics.

I could go through their arguments, and illustrate why they're better than your stances-- but I really don't have the time to do that right now. My appeal to authority isn't being used as a way of just shutting down opposing opinions-- it's just a way of saying "look, I'm not saying the moon is made out of cheese. There's other people who believe this as well, and they come with professions of respect". Of course, the proper way is then to go into each argument and illustrate why they should be respected-- but I don't have the luxury of that time right now.

The semantics stem from an argument of logic.

It's a liberal construct. Power is not a necessary element to racism. An individual with no power whatsoever can act in a racist manner, and to suggest that they can't is utterly ridiculous.

Please move this to the general discussion. I haven't read all the post in here, but going to assume the quality is that of a general discussion thread.

I highly doubt you can illustrate the superiority of your position. After all, you mentioned it a few months ago, but back then you added that "many scholars believe this, but I don't necessarily agree with it". As astoundingly self-assured as you have recently become, I doubt a few months of experience equipped you to so easily dismantle the opposing argument.

The semantics stem from an argument of logic.

Again, doubtful. I am thoroughly familiar with your position. You're completely close minded on the subject. In fact, your perspective on the issue is as narrow as Archie's is on Islam. Incidentally, your perspective on Islam is fantastic, and you managed to completely turn me around on the subject. Now apply the same logic you have on Islam and the forces of history that got us here to "white people", and you'll be set. Because as it stands, the arguments you use are not very different from the fascist perspectives of the far-right on non-whites.

Edit: Blunted the edge a bit since I actually like you.

I'm genuinely not offended. I am surprised at what we as society allow to be said about one ethnic or racial group, but not to another. Also, public comments such as this always have more scrutiny. If Gordon and Kevin were good friends, this comment might be just fine in private. I'm not sure it's appropriate as a public comment, similar to my "smart for a black guy" comment above.
Making a joke about the intelligence (or lack thereof) of a black person is never appropriate. It seems you need that clarified.

Sadly, alot of comments reflect the usual double standard.
He says it, its a joke. We all should know that.
A white guy says something, its insensitive.
Such an obvious double standard, but the best part is the denial of it.

I could care less, it doesn't offend me in the least. What does bother me is how this tiny example is played out daily in our society now. Not debatable. But "they" will anyway.

Durant is pretty smart.......for a Black guy.

Your awesome I love the response. The reality is that it is ok for anyone to attack white males, but heaven forbid we say anything back. Racism hardly exists in the USA. I think "culturelism" does and there is nothing wrong with not liking a certain culture and not wanting it to invade the culture that we have. Far to many people get racism mixed with not liking how people act.

Holy **** is this for real?
