What's new

Lyles ceiling

Getting Shelvin Mack for an excess 2nd-round pick was pretty savvy. If he could foresee Mack averaging 16/5/8 then hat's off.

Point is he's doing things with a plan, a great well thought out plan instead of taking shortcuts like a lot of teams have. Spending money and assets, kinda like what many here are clamoring for, and what the Knicks have done. Worst thing they ever did was trade all that good young talent for Carmello.

When rebuilding, it make zero sense to spend money in free agency. All of a sudden u build a talented young core through the draft and u want to sacrifice chemistry and Long Jevity, meaning skipping steps, and turning into the Knicks and the seller dwellers that used to be the clippers.

Maybe there's some comparison right now to Chandler Parsons when Parsons started breaking out the end of his rookie year in Houston. Lyles has more versatility on the block, but Parsons is faster in the open floor.

Seems pretty off target. Parsons is more like Hayward.

Lyles reminded me of Goberts rookie season. Started the season slow then got everyone excited. My comp for him is Tom Chambers meets Juwan Howard.

Hmmmm.... I kinda like the Chambers upside comp. Chambers was more explosive/ athletic in his early years and got to the line a lot. Wonder if Lyles has that in him? Lyles seems like more of a finesse/ shooting big, where Chambers was more dynamic.

Chambers had one awesome dunk but i don't think i'd necessarily class him as that athletic .. a shooting scorer moreso

It always is a chuckle when I can see you joyous about something you can have no control over but pretend you are the smart one who thought it. Thanks for make me laugh the night. Thank you.

Can this be real? It is too good.

IMO, Lyles seems not only to have great ballhandling skills for someone of his size but also a good-great shooting touch and hence he may prove himself capable not only of creating his own shot consistently but also to setting up other players.

Van Horn wasn't much of a ballhandler so the comparison between him an Lyles doesn't seem to work. Besides, Van Horn seemed more athletic right out of college.

Parsons could be considered a good ballhandler for a 4, but he is actually a 3, since he can't guard 4s consistently and also is a perimeter player on offense. The comparison with Lyles, thus, doesn't seem right.

In terms of ballhandling and size, the comparison with Odom seems right on the spot, but Lyles seems to have a better shooting touch (not only from outside but even from middle range). On the other hand, Odom was a good defender, capable of guarding 3s e 4s with competence. Lyles is not athletic or commited enough to guard 3s consistently (at least currently) and is not strong enough to guard 4s. Also, he doesn't seem to have much shotblocking ability while Odom was at least decent in this respect.

I think the best comparison is actually with Jamal Mashburn (especially from his late 20s onwards). As Lyles, Mash wasn't much gifted athletically, was a great ballhandler, had a great shooting touch and wasn't much of a defender. Unlike Parsons, Mashburn and Lyles had/have a middle range game as an important part of their offensive repertoire. Mashburn was a 3 of course, but was capable of occasionaly sliding to the 4 spot during his later years (when he seemed to gain some weight). He was very similar to Carmelo Anthony in this regard.

It remains to be seem if Lyles will ever become physical enough to defend 4s. Otherwise he may become a bigger Jamal Mashburn (although probably a little less talented offensively).

Thoughts?

Mashburn posted up a ton, even early in his career. That's not really Lyles' game per se. I still think my KVH comp is better. He had a much better than handle than you remember. Admittedly, Lyles is more fluid in how he dribbles and shoots though.

I have always said Odom as best comp for overall game... but I hate comps as none are dead on.
Mash was a Kentucky guy too.. but only way I could compare the two would be to add a fat "Lite" to Lyles.
Mash could FLAT OUT score the ball.. which is different than Lyles having a nice offensive toolbox.

How much did watch Chambers in the early 80s?

Even if you've just seen the one highlight dunk, could someone who is not athletic/ explosive have made that play?

Can you name 10 PFs from the early 80s who were more athletic than Chambers?

1984 Chambers would be a top athletic PF even today, in my opinion.

Lyles is doing some serious work. He kind of reminds me of Rodney Hood the way he catches with a plan and gets to a spot... not always to the rim but to a good open midrange area. His passing and rebound aggressiveness is also getting better.

I don't know who the comp is but man he can do a ton... He has more driving game than Ryan Anderson... He's not nearly as tough or as good of a passer as Draymond... He really might be like a Kevin Love level offensive player at some point... I think I might be crazy. Turning off Jazzfanz now.

You guys need to keep in mind that KVH and Green were 22 year old rookies. Mashburn was 21 as a rookie. Lyles is 20. He still has some time to develop for a decent comp.

Lyles has just impressed me so much. Especially compared to the beginning of the season where he seemed hopeless. Now he's epic confident. His shooting has been impressive but I'm also really impressed by his driving to the basket, as you mentioned. When he sees no help defense he's very good at pump-faking, getting his guy to commit and driving for an uncontested two.

The scouts were right when they said his basketball I.Q. was high. I don't know if he'll ever be a solid rebounder but he can score. When it comes to stretching the floor or small ball he's a legit threat.
