What's new

Wow, Gordan Hayward!

Let's not overreact here. One good game in December of a rookie season probably means nothing.

I will now prove my point:

Well, thanks for the memory and the major laugh I got from watching this again. I almost with KK2 had stayed with us just so I could yell BOOM B!TCHES ever time he scores a basket. It was a blast in the playoffs last year, and every time I did it, my gf would just bust out laughing. Not because she got the joke, she just thought I was weird.
I even yelled it at Skybox during game six and everyone around me thought I was nuts.

Anyway. I don't think you should be comparing KK2 to Hayward. Hayward has MUCH more talent and potential. We all know that KK2 will never be that good. I don't think he has ever scored 17 points in a game either.

A more apt comparison to prove your point would be to bring up Gaines and his game against Cleveland last year.

Dude. Check the link in my post.

December 26 of Kosta's rookie year (2008)

29 minutes
18 points on 8-11 shooting
8 rebounds
2 assists
2 steals
1 block

If anything that's more impressive than Hayward's game, especially given the minutes involved. And it's still the best game of Koufos' career.

ok, missed that one.

I feel pretty satisfied that Gordan has much more upside. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I still feel like Sloan and management killed Koufos. I know that sounds nuts, but he was good his rookie year, then inexplicably got pulled for one of the least productive players to ever get a 2nd contract (Collins) and the slide began from there. Furthermore, he sat on the bench most of the season instead of getting sent to the D-League. Just sat there, for no reason. I think that **** destroyed his psyche, but oh well.

Gordon Hayward AKA the right handed Ginobili in a few years. Calling it now.

Accuracy in his jumper was great to see from Hayward. 2 other things I liked:
1. Hayward really kept the ball moving side-to-side when he was out there (a staple of Jazz basketball and something often lacking this season)
2. His ability to change ends of the floor quickly which led to shots at the rim 3 times last night (missed layup, 2 FT's, layup on off reb). For those Wes Matthews fans, Wes would get a layup or FT's atleast once every game just be out-running his man in transition.

Also I agree with numberica about Koufos. His regression from 08-09 to the following season (and where he is today) was extremely disappointing and baffling. We knew he wasn't going to be Gasol but he was big and could score the basketball. After Hibbert came off the board, the Jazz drafted Koufos because his perimeter game (saw him alot his freshman season at OSU - a legit college 3pt shooter) reminded them of Memo's. At the time, I thought the Jazz's vision (remember - summer of 2008) was Deron and Boozer were the francise cornerstones and Koufos could be a replacement when Memo's contract expired. Obviously that didn't happen.

Hayward looks like a boy playing against men out there physically , but he shows a lot of toughness jumping all over the place and hustling for rebounds. He doesn't look scared out there, he's getting better and pretty quickly! I've been impressed with his improvement this year, hope he keeps it up he is getting an opportunity now

He isnt that small or weak, he is just so damn pale and baby faced.

on the other hand, Gordon scored all 17 points in the 2nd half.

Which means what exactly? Do points count more in the second half?

These games happen for rookies all the time, even perimeter rookies (to address KEK's point). They don't presage anything. If he does it twice it might be a coincidence but it will take something more than a one-off splurge for me to forget the past two months of total incompetence.

Past examples of Jazz rookies:

Dee Brown: 13/5/8/3 in 30 minutes

https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200704180UTA.html

Now he's out of the league

Kirk Snyder: 15/6 in 28 minutes

https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200504170POR.html

Now he's out of the league

Pavlovic: 18/3 in 19 minutes

https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200312030HOU.html

Still in the league, but he's essentially a replacement level player.

Even Jarron Collins put up a 22/10 game as a rookie.

True story: Hayward played 44 minutes and scored 17 points and was still only the third most impressive rookie in the game.

Should I start listing every player I can find that started off slow in their rookie year and then went on to have a very good NBA career? Well, let me just list one: Kobe Bryant.

Edit: BTW, here are Kobe's stats from his first couple years in the league: https://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/stats?playerId=110
